ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Elijah Brown scored 25, including the final five points of the first half Saturday, helping New Mexico beat Northern Iowa 76-57. Brown’s surge capped an 8-0 Lobos’ run that broke a 27-27 tie – the seventh of the first half. That was a key stretch, however, as the Panthers (6-3) could get no closer than five points the rest of the way. Tim Williams added 19 for New Mexico (6-2), while Brown grabbed seven rebounds.

Northern Iowa got 12 off the bench from Wyatt Lohaus, while leading scorer Wes Washpun scored 10, six below his average. The Panthers had a chance to get back into the game early in the second half after cutting the deficit to 44-38. But they botched consecutive fast-break opportunities and threw it away on the next possession. That helped start the Lobos on a quick 7-0 burst that pushed the score to 51-38.

THAYER, Iowa (AP) — Iowa law enforcement officials have searched two homes in Thayer as part of the investigation into the death of a woman whose body was found in a pond earlier this week. Des Moines television station KCCI reports that Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation agents and Union County sheriff’s deputies searched the homes Friday.

The body of 37-year-old Loretta Dillinger was found last week in a pond near Lorimor in southern Iowa. Her car was found nearby. Authorities say they consider Dillinger’s death suspicious. Authorities say Dillinger had lived at least one of the homes searched Friday. A fire occurred at that home in September.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Bruce Anderson returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the second straight week to help North Dakota State to a 23-13 victory over Northern Iowa in an FCS quarterfinal game Saturday. Anderson appeared to be corralled at the NDSU 40 but spun out of the tackle and sprinted in on a 97-yard scoring play. That turned a halftime deficit into a 14-10 lead.

NDSU (11-2) held UNI’s highly-touted running game in check most of the game. The Panthers (9-5) finished with 120 yards rushing. Bison running back King Frazier ran for 107 of his team’s 153 yards rushing. NDSU was outgained by a 2-1 margin in the first half but finished with a 269-221 advantage in total offense.

The four-time defending FCS champion Bison advance to the semifinals against Richmond.

Lavon and Miss NiNi share a baking recipe for the season.

CRANBERRY ALMOND CHRISTMAS CAKEtheslowroasteditalian.com

Ingredients:

  • 2 c. granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • ¾ c. unsalted butter, room temperature, cut into ½-inch cubes
  • 1 t. almond extract
  • 2 t. vanilla extract
  • 2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1-12-oz. bag fresh cranberries (or frozen and thawed)
  • 1 c. sliced almonds

Method:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray sides and bottom of a 9 x 13-inch baking pan with nonstick spray with flour. Set aside. Pour fresh cranberries into a colander; rinse and drain. In a large mixing bowl, beat sugar and eggs for 5 minutes with an electric mixer on medium. The volume of mixture will increase by almost half and will be thickened. Add butter and extracts and beat for 2 more minutes. Slowly add flour and beat until combined. Fold in cranberries. Using a spatula, pour into pan; smooth top. Sprinkle almonds over top. Bake for 40-45 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.

Yields: 18 servings

NOTE from Miss NiNi: What an easily delightful dessert to prepare…and with rave reviews upon sampling! Not a fan of cranberries? You just might change your mind about that with this recipe. I denoted more of a tart cherry taste rather than a cranberry flavor. Crunchy sliced almonds and almond extract add kisses of flavor to keep you coming back for more! This cake makes a festive dessert for the holidays.
