Michigan State-Iowa basketball game postponed

Sports

January 13th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(A-P) Michigan State’s basketball game at No. 5 Iowa on Thursday night has been postponed because of COVID-19 issues with the Spartans. Michigan State center Mady Sissoko and guard Steven Izzo have tested positive, and the school said there was an additional positive test Wednesday afternoon.

“I’m really disappointed, but it just goes to prove that this can affect anyone,” coach Tom Izzo said. “I feel so comfortable that me, my son and my players did everything possible and followed every protocol as best we could. I’m really, really impressed with the way they have conducted themselves. This virus does not discriminate and I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to wear a mask, wash your hands and follow protocols.”

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Madison Greene had 20 points and a career-high six steals, Jacy Sheldon and Braxtin Miller each added 18 points and No. 15 Ohio State beat Iowa 84-82 in overtime to snap the Hawkeyes’ 42-game home winning streak. Iowa had not lost in Carver-Hawkeye Arena since a 92-74 defeat against Nebraska on Jan. 28, 2018.

Chiefs’ Edwards-Helaire rejoins Hill, others at practice

January 13th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire has practiced for the first time since getting hurt in a game against New Orleans in Week 15. That’s raising hopes the first-round draft pick can play in the divisional round of the playoffs against Cleveland on Sunday. Edwards-Helaire had been out with a high-ankle sprain.

The only players to miss practice Wednesday were wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who missed the final game of the regular-season with a calf injury; rookie linebacker Willie Gay Jr., who has been dealing with an ankle injury; and cornerback Rashad Fenton, who hurt both of his ankles in the Chiefs’ meaningless Week 17 loss to the Chargers.

Atlantic Head Football Coach Mike McDermott submits resignation

Atlantic Head Football Coach Mike McDermott has submitted his resignation to the Atlantic School Board, who will discuss his departure at tonight’s school board meeting. McDermott is an Atlantic graduate and long time coach within the program. He has either played or coached football for the past 34 years, most of those years in Atlantic.

McDermott served as offensive coordinator for many years under former Head Coach Gaylord Schelling. He led the offense during Atlantic’s State Championship run in 2002. McDermott was hired as head coach for the Trojans prior to the 2016 season. During that five year tenure the Trojans saw gradual improvement and capped off their best season in over 15 years this past season with a 7-2 record and appearance in the State Playoffs. McDermott compiled a record of 21-24 as head coach.

McDermott told KJAN Sports that the decision to step down is purely for family reasons. His son Cooper has two years left of college football at Dakota State and his daughter Callie has 3 years left of high school volleyball and he wants to take this time to watch them compete.

McDermott plans to remain teaching 8th grade in Atlantic and will continue to coach tennis in the spring.

Clarinda scrapes out road win over Atlantic boys

Sports

January 12th, 2021 by admin

The Clarinda Cardinals picked up a road win over Atlantic on Tuesday night 56-44. Atlantic built an early 7 point lead in the first quarter but Clarinda cut the edge to 2 by the end of the first at 13-11. The Cardinals then grabbed the lead early in the second and never trailed the rest on the night. It was 24-21 Cardinals at half and 38-32 at the end of the third. The Cardinals built the lead up to 11 early in the fourth but the Trojans did claw back within 4. That’s as close as they would get though as Clarinda got a couple of nice run outs late to seal the victory.

Grant Jobe led the Cardinals with 18 points including some big fourth quarter free throws. Wyatt Schmitt and Michael Shull each dropped in 12 as the Cardinals improved to 7-5 on the season. They will welcome in Sidney on Thursday and travel to Shenandoah on Friday to close out the week.

Atlantic was led by 16 from Skyler Handlos and 13 from Dayton Templeton. The Trojans drop to 3-5 on the season and will next up host Harlan on Friday. We’ll have coverage of that game on KJAN.

Atlantic runs past Clarinda, Rasmussen tops 1,000 career points

Sports

January 12th, 2021 by admin

The Atlantic girls basketball team was tested early by Clarinda but started to pull away by the end of the second quarter and ran away with a 71-35 win on Tuesday night. Atlantic lead 17-14 at the end of the first but gradually started to get the transition offense flowing and built the lead to 40-21 by halftime, scoring the last 13 points of the half. The Trojans kept the foot on the gas in the second half and pulled away for their second win over the Cardinals this season.

In the process of the victory, senior Haley Rasmussen reached the 1,000 career point plateau on a free throw in the third quarter. The game was paused for a moment before the second free throw as her teammates and supporters cheered the accomplishment as it was announced to the crowd and brought some balloons sideline to mark the occasion. Rasmussen led all scorers on the night with 22 points and the Trojans improved to 5-6 on the season. Jada Jensen finished with 18 and Tessa Grooms had a solid game inside, finishing with 15 points. The Trojans will now prep for a home game on Friday against Harlan.

Clarinda was led by 14 points from Jessalee Neihart and 12 from Chloe Strait. The Cardinals fall to 2-11 and will next up host Sidney on Thursday.

We’ll have coverage of Atlantic vs. Harlan on Friday. Catch the full game replay HERE.
