Ott’s petition for 5th year in NCAA’s hands

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The Big Ten has forwarded Iowa’s petition for a fifth year of eligibility for defensive end Drew Ott to the NCAA.

Iowa didn’t say if the NCAA has given the school a timetable on when it might rule on Ott’s situation.

Ott played in six games last season before tearing knee ligaments, ending his season.

Ott, who was a fourth-year senior in 2015, filed a medical hardship waiver request after the season.

Ott participated in last week’s NFL scouting combine in case the NCAA denies his appeal. But if he’s allowed to return for 2016, it’ll be a big boost for a defense that could be among the best in the Big Ten.

Runoff from feedlot near Macedonia reaches West Nish River

February 29th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) say they received a call Sunday regarding diluted liquid manure running off a field from a cattle open feedlot about 20 miles east of Council Bluffs. On Sunday, DNR investigators found an unknown amount of wastewater had entered a tributary of the West Nishnabotna River. Investigators searched for signs of a fish kill, but did not find any dead fish. DNR staff talked with Cyclone Cattle feedlot producers near Macedonia.

The facility was pumping liquids from a solids settling basin and land applying the wastewater through a center pivot irrigation system. Land application is allowed during winter for open feedlots. However, the wastewater was running off the field, which is not allowed.

Water samples have been submitted and DNR is waiting for laboratory results. The investigation is ongoing. The DNR will continue to monitor the situation and consider appropriate enforcement action.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has become the first state in the nation to derive more than 30 percent of its electricity from wind energy. The American Wind Energy Association says more than 31 percent of the state’s electricity came from wind turbines last year. South Dakota was at 25.5 percent and Kansas at 23.9 percent.

Gov. Terry Branstad says Iowa has the potential to jump above 40 percent in the next five years. In a report released Monday the association said wind produced more than 190 million megawatt-hours of power in the U.S. last year, enough electricity for about 17.5 million typical homes. The goal is for the U.S. to derive 20 percent of its electricity by 2030. The nation was at 4.7 percent from wind last year.

A Minnesota man was arrested following an investigation into a break-in that occurred Feb. 24th at a Council Bluffs car dealership. Bluffs Police say 60-year old Samuel Berry, of Brooklyn Park, MN, was being held in the Pottawattamie County Jail on a charge of Burglary in the 3rd degree. His bond was set at $5,000.

According to authorities, his arrest followed an investigation into a break-in at one of the buildings at the Rhoden Auto Center complex. While Rhoden employees were reviewing surveillance footage of the break in, one of them noticed that the suspect looked like a man who had been in the day before and asked a clerk to make change for a dollar.

After comparing video of the man with the burglary suspect, the employees were convinced that it was the same person. They also had video of the vehicle that the man had arrived in the previous day. They then called the police and showed the videos to Officer Shawn Landon. After speaking with the employees, Officer Landon began checking the area for a car matching the suspect vehicle’s description.

As Officer Landon was checking the parking lot of Motel 6 at 3032 South Expressway, he noticed a man placing something in the trunk of a bronze colored Cadillac. The man and the vehicle matched the descriptions of those in the video, so Officer Landon made contact with him. The man was identified as Berry.

After further examination of the videos, it was determined that Berry was the man seen breaking into Rhoden Auto Center on the night of the 24th. Berry’s vehicle was impounded and he was placed under arrest. On February 26th, a search warrant was obtained for Berry’s vehicle. Located in the trunk of the vehicle were specific clothing items worn by Berry during the commission of the burglary, a pry bar used in the burglary and property belonging to Rhoden Auto Center. Berry
