SAC CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Ida Grove man accused of intentionally hitting another man with his car has pleaded not guilty to charges in the case. The Sioux City Journal reports that 36-year-old Jeremy Werneburg pleaded not guilty Friday in Sac County District Court to attempted murder, assault using a dangerous weapon, going armed with intent, second-degree criminal mischief and two counts of willful injury. His trial has been set for May 10.

Police say Werneburg threatened a group of people with a hammer outside the Carnarvon Inn in Carnarvon, Iowa, on Valentine’s Day. Police say he then got into his car and intentionally hit Freese, pinning Freese against a building. Freese suffered serious injuries. Police arrested Werneburg three days later in Fort Dodge.

Iowa man sentenced to prison for shooting at crop duster

EMMETSBURG, Iowa (AP) — A northwest Iowa man has been sentenced to five year in prison for shooting at a crop-dusting plane in Palo Alto County last year. Sioux City television station KTIV reports that 55-year-old John Metzger, of Whittemore, was sentenced Friday in Palo Alto District Court.

Metzger was found guilty in November by a jury of going armed with intent. He was not found guilty of other charges, including terrorism, stalking with a weapon and intimidation with a dangerous weapon.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office says Metzger fired a gun that hit the wing flap of a plane while spraying a field in Fairfield Township on July 31. The plane was landed safely at Steier’s landing strip in Whittemore. The pilot wasn’t injured.

DEVILED EGGS

Hard cook (not hard boil) 6 or 12 eggs.

1  In a 2-quart saucepan, place the eggs in a single layer. Add enough cold water until it is at least 1 inch above the eggs. Heat uncovered to boiling over high heat. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Cover with lid; let stand 15 minutes.

2  Immediately pour off the hot water from the eggs, then run cold water over them in the saucepan until completely cool.

3  Tap each egg lightly on the kitchen counter to crackle the shell. Roll the egg between your hands to loosen the shell, then peel starting at the large end. If the shell is hard to peel, hold egg under cold water while peeling.

Note: older eggs are easier to peel than fresh eggs. Uncooked eggs will keep in the carton for 3 weeks past the time you bring them home from the store.

Ingredients for 12 eggs; decrease by half for 6 eggs

3-4 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard or 1 tsp dry mustard
1 tablespoon minced sweet pickle
Dash of salt and pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
Optional: 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Note: if the mixture seems dry, add a tsp of pickle juice

Cut each egg in half length wise. Remove yolks into a quart-size zipper bag. Add other ingredients, zip and “knead” bag with your hands to mix all ingredients.  Press yolk mixture toward one of the bottom corners. With a pair of scissors, carefully snip a small bit off the corner of the bag. You now have a “pastry bag” from which you can pipe the mixture into egg white halves. Sprinkle with parsley and paprika if you wish. Cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate one to eight hours. Serve cold.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Jesse Jansma scored 15 points and Hull Western Christian gave outgoing coach Jim Eekhoff a record eighth state championship Friday night, beating Cascade 42-35 for the Class 2A title.

Eekhoff prevailed in a matchup with veteran Cascade coach Al Marshall, who also is retiring. It was the first time in a 47-year career that Marshall had a team in the state championship game.

Jansma hit a 3-pointer and scored on a drive late in the first half to put Western Christian (25-2) ahead to stay. The Wolfpack eventually built their lead to nine points, which proved to be enough to hold of Cascade (22-4).

Josh VanLingen added 10 points and nine rebounds for Western Christian and Dustin Marra grabbed 10 rebounds. Cascade’s Devin Green led the Cougars with 17 points.

Girls bowling team notices scoring error, gives up 3rd place trophy

A scoring mistake turned into a superb display of sportsmanship this week in Iowa. At last month’s girls state bowling tournament in Des Moines, Charles City took home the third place trophy in class 1A. But, team members later discovered a 10 pin error in their scoring. Jason Eslinger, with the Iowa Girl’s High School Athletic Union, is praising the Charles City girls for reporting the mistake, which resulted in the third place trophy going to Le Mars.

“The (Charles City) team wanted the right team to have the trophy and not only that, but they wanted to deliver the trophy to Le Mars in person. It was just a tremendous amount of sportsmanship on their part,” Eslinger said. The two bowling teams met on Tuesday in Humboldt to make the trophy exchange. That’s where the Le Mars girls turned the feel good story up a notch further.

“They actually made fourth place medals to give to the Charles City team,” Eslinger said. “The ribbons were made with the Charles City school colors.” The two teams had lunch together in Humboldt and the Girls Athletic Union picked up the bill.
