AP Source: Chiefs void contract of veteran linebacker Hali

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press the Kansas City Chiefs voided the contract of veteran linebacker Tamba Hali, who took a pay cut with a reworked deal to remain with the team last season. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday because the Chiefs aren’t allowed to discuss contract matters.

Hali had four voidable years added to his one-year contract so that the team could spread out his signing bonus, thereby creating additional salary cap space last offseason. But the contract also stipulated the Chiefs had until Friday to sign Hali to an extension, otherwise he would become a free agent.

Despite dealing with a bothersome knee much of last season, Hali had 6 1-2 sacks and was voted to his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl. The 10-year veteran will turn 33 in November. The Kansas City Star first reported that Hali’s contract was voided.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) – Wei-Yin Chen threw two shutout innings in his spring debut for the Miami Marlins, who lost 3-2 to the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday. Chen allowed three hits and got some help when right fielder Giancarlo Stanton easily threw out Brayan Pena at the plate to end the second.

The Cardinals’ Matt Holliday was scheduled to make his spring training debut but was scratched because of tightness in his back. Holliday was in the lineup at first base. He has been a left fielder his entire career but has been working at first some in camp. St. Louis starter Marco Gonzales allowed four hits and two runs, one earned, in 2 2-3 innings. Anthony Garcia’s two-out, two-run double in the eighth put the Cardinals ahead.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Perry Ellis scored 22 points, including a hook shot over Iowa State’s Georges Niang to ice the game, and No. 1 Kansas stretched its nation-leading home winning streak to 42 games with an 85-78 victory over the 21st-ranked Cyclones on Saturday. March 5th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Authorities are investigating the latest of what residents in one western Iowa neighborhood believe is a series of dog poisonings dating back years. The Daily Nonpareil reports several dogs have died mysteriously along Rosebud Lane just outside Council Bluffs in the last six years.

The latest being investigated by the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office is that of a golden retriever puppy belonging to the father of Tara Campbell of Council Bluffs. A trip to Campbell’s eastern Nebraska veterinarian after it became six Tuesday showed the dog had anti-freeze crystals in its urine. The dog later died.

Sheriff’s investigators are testing refried beans found in the yard where the puppy had been tethered.

Campbell says she has had two other dogs die suddenly in the last six years.

Man committed for evaluation after threatening to jump from a Council Bluffs bridge

News

March 5th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Police in Council Bluffs say a man was safely talked-down from jumping off a bridge there early this (Saturday) morning. At about 1:25-a.m., officers were called to the Ave G viaduct in reference to a male jumping from a moving vehicle. While officers were en route, the caller advised the male had climbed over the ledge of the bridge and was
threatening to jump off. Officers arrived on scene and found the male on the outside of the chain link fence at the Northwest end of the bridge.

Officers began speaking to the man in an effort to talk him down as he was threatening to jump. An officer was able to grab the male’s left arm and talked him into climbing over the concrete barricade to officers. He was then transported to Mercy Hospital by Council Bluffs Fire Department for medical treatment and
psychological evaluation.
