MADISON, Wis. – University of Iowa women’s soccer fell to Wisconsin, 1-0, on the road Thursday at the McClimon Soccer Complex. Iowa moves to 6-1-2 overall, with a 0-1-1 start in Big Ten Conference play.

The lone goal was scored in the 24^th minute on a header by Wisconsin’s Aryssa Mahrt, sent whipping just past the reach of diving Hawkeye goalkeeper Macy Enneking. The Badger score was the third goal Iowa has allowed through nine games this season.

After being outshot, 6-1, in the first half, the Hawkeye defense stiffened to allow just two Badger shots following the 26^th minute of play, both coming in the second half. Iowa created four second-half shots of its own, three of which were on goal.

Freshman Millie Greer took two shots on goal in the final eight minutes of play, including a strong look in the 86^th minute which was thwarted by an athletic save from veteran Wisconsin goalkeeper Erin McKinney.

Enneking finished the contest with four saves, one shy of season high.

• Iowa was outshot, 8-5, on Thursday night, including a 5-4 deficit in shots on goal. The Hawkeyes entered the contest with a sizeable advantage in shots taken (128-47) and shots on goal (60-22) against its opponents this season.
• Iowa has held opponents to two shots or fewer in 11 of 18 total halves of competition this season.
• 90 Tracker: Hawkeyes Samantha Cary (7), Millie Greer (6), Maggie Johnston (4) and Rielee Fetty (3) each added to their 90-minute count on Thursday. Making their 90-minute firsts this season were junior Kenzie Roling, sophomore Kellen Fife and freshman Eva Pattison.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team opened up its fall campaign with a 25-6 win over the Mississauga Tigers in 14 innings on Thursday evening.

The Hawkeyes pounded out 21 hits, registering 14 extra base hits with three home runs. Senior Michael Seegers had three hits, including a home run, and a team-high three RBIs. Sophomore Blake Guerin and junior Connor Hennings (3 RBIs) also cleared the outfield wall on Thursday evening with home run blasts. Sophomore Gable Mitchell matched Seegers with three hits of his own, while freshman Jaixen Frost, redshirt sophomore Coy Sarsfield and sophomore Kellen Strohmeyer put together multi-hit performances.

Iowa’s pitching staff struck out 27 Mississauga hitters and held the Tigers scoreless through seven innings. Junior Brody Brecht started the game on the mound for the Hawkeyes, striking out two batters in his lone inning of work. Junior Marcus Morgan, sophomore Cade Obermueller, junior Jack Whitlock, redshirt senior Ben DeTaeye, and redshirt junior Zach Voelker all registered three-up, three-down innings. Whitlock and DeTaeye struck out the side in their outings, while freshman Elliot Cadieux–Lanoue also matched the team-high with three strikeouts.

Up Next: Iowa’s fall season continues on Friday, September 29, when the Hawkeyes host Madison College at Duane Banks Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. and admission is free.

CORALVILLE, Iowa — University of Iowa volleyball fell to Minnesota, 3-2, Thursday evening inside Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.

Caitlan Buettner led the way for the Hawkeyes, registering 17 kills and hitting at a clip of .321. Delaney McSweeney added 8 kills to the board for the Hawkeyes, and hit at a percentage of .467. Michelle Urquhart tied her career best of 5 in service aces. Nataly Moravec recorded a career best of 12 digs. Setters Bailey Ortega and Kaia Mateo put up 19 assists a piece.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (Minnesota, 25-14): Minnesota came out with momentum, but the Hawkeyes were quick to respond with a kill by Urquhart. The Gophers led by one, but Mateo and Anna Davis put up a block and tied it up at three. The two teams battled back and forth, Iowa trailing closely behind. Mateo assisted Buettner for her first kill of the set. Minnesota went on an offensive run, until Iowa capitalized on an error and won the ball back, allowing Urquhart and McSweeney to post a block. Following an Iowa timeout, Hawkeye duo Buettner and Davis stood tall at the net to block a Gopher hit. A kill by Buettner shortened the spread for the Hawkeyes. At match point, Davis went back to serve an ace, and fought to catch the Gophers. The Hawkeyes fell short and Minnesota took the set.

SET 2 (IOWA, 25-20): Minnesota came out with a kill, but Iowa took advantage of a few Gopher errors early in the set to take the lead. The set tied at three before Iowa pulled ahead from a kill by Buettner, assisted by Ortega. Urquhart went back to serve an ace, stretching the spread for the Hawkeyes. Sydney Dennis made a pass to the outside allowing Buettner to secure a kill. The two teams battled back and forth, tying at six, seven, eight, and nine. Urquhart came through swinging from the outside for a kill. Minnesota took a small lead, but the Hawkeyes fought back to tie the set again at 12 and 13. A kill by Buettner and an ace by Urquhart gave Iowa the lead by two. Following an unsuccessful challenge by Minnesota, Urquhart found a hole to serve an ace and forced the Gophers into a timeout. Buettner and Davis teamed up in the front for a block, increasing the spread to six. A McSweeney kill brought the set to match point in favor of the Hawkeyes. Iowa won the final point of the set and came out on top.

SET 3 (Minnesota, 25-16): The Hawkeyes went 3-0 right out of the gate. Minnesota tried to catch up, but the Hawkeyes were able to keep the lead. Moravec and Davis paired up at the net to register a block. The Gophers brought the set to a tie at four, and the two teams remained neck-and-neck early in the set. Iowa followed closely behind, and Ortega and Urquhart paired up for kill to lessen the gap. Buettner then put the ball down, making it back-to-back kills for the Hawkeyes. The Gophers went on an offensive run, but a kill by Moravec put the ball back in Iowa’s hands. The Hawkeyes fought to close the gap, as Moravec put down another kill. The Gophers held the lead and took the third set.

SET 4 (IOWA 26-24): Ortega assisted Moravec and McSweeney for kills, starting the set 2-0. Iowa held the lead towards the beginning of the set. Urquhart added a pair of points to the board, recording an ace and a kill, forcing Minnesota into a timeout. Moravec brought the Iowa lead to six with a kill from the outside. A big dig by Buettner kept the ball alive for the Hawkeyes and allowed Moravec to end the rally with a kill. The Hawkeyes went on an offensive run, holding the Gophers at six for four possessions. The Hawkeyes led 18-14, until the Gophers went on an offensive run and tied the set at 19 and 20. Mateo assisted McSweeney to post a kill from the right side for Iowa to get ahead by one. The set remained tight at the end, tying four more times, leading Minnesota into a timeout. At set point, Mateo set Buettner up for a kill and Iowa was able to finish the set.

SET 5: (Minnesota, 15-6): The Gophers took the first couple of points, but Iowa then took advantage of their error. Minnesota jumped ahead early before Iowa took the ball back after a Buettner kill. A Gopher error sent Buettner back to serve, and Iowa put up a pair of points. Minnesota held the lead until the end of the match, and despite the Hawkeye’s fight, the Gophers closed the set and ultimately the match.

“We played two really good sets, but you have to get three to win the match. I’m proud of the two that we won, because we did create some runs which got us a little bit of a buffer. They fought their way back and we were able to finish off those two sets. That showed a lot of toughness, and I am proud of those parts of the game. I just wish in the fifth set that we could’ve came out and played from the beginning like we had in the fourth set. We gave them too much of a buffer, and it was too much to come back from. But they’re a ranked team, we had our shot with them, and we’ll learn from it. Victory or defeat, we are going to keep improving and keep learning.

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Iowa State (3-6-1) fell to defending Big 12 champion West Virginia (3-5-2) on Thursday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium by a score of 1-0.

Both teams entered tonight’s contest searching for their first win of the Big 12 slate as each dropped their opening match. The Cyclones held strong with the Mountaineers, warding off shot after shot before WVU finally broke through in the 76th minute off a Maya McCutcheon goal.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Avery Gillahan was phenomenal for the Cyclones on the evening, as she saved nine shots, tying her career-best. Gillahan had multiple full-body extensions to keep Mountaineer points off the board.

Iowa State tallied seven shots on the evening, with a pair apiece coming from Salomé Prat and Lilly Touhey. WVU, on the other hand, sent 19 shots the way of Gillahan, with seven being on target, making her work all night.

The game began with the Mountaineers putting pressure on the Iowa State backline immediately. WVU tallied three shots in the first five minutes of action, but Iowa State was able to handle them all and smooth out the defense from there.

The first half was a balanced one where each team had a handful of shots (three for ISU, six for WVU) and each keeper came away with two saves as the two teams entered the break tied nil-nil.

ISU had a great shot from Leia Khairy that West Virginia keeper Kayza Massey, a preseason All-Big 12 Team member, laid out to deflect to keep ISU off the board in the 37th minute of play.

In the second half, West Virginia really ratcheted up the offensive pressure as the Mountaineers laced 13 shots in the Cyclones’ direction. Gillahan was able to navigate the barrage of attempts until the final 15-minute mark.

In the 76th minute, WVU’s Isabel Lopez sent a cross into the box where Maya McCutcheon controlled the carom and sent a left-footed shot into the back-right of the net to give WVU its difference-maker.

West Virginia outshot ISU 19-7 on the night and had six more corners, tallying an 11-5 advantage. Gillahan came away with more saves on the evening, as she recorded nine saves to Massey’s four.

Following its first road Big 12 match, the Cyclones will head to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats in the two teams’ first-ever meeting. Iowa State and Cincy are set to play on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. (CT) and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa Head Rowing Coach Jeff Garbutt added 31 student-athletes to the roster on Thursday.

“I’m excited to welcome the new rowers to the program”, Garbutt said. “As everyone knows, we take our walk-on process very seriously here at Iowa. Our homegrown Hawkeyes are the lifeblood of the program and from what I can see we have another great class that I look forward to working with in the future.”

Iowa finished 20th in the CRCA Pocock Final Poll for the first time since 2019 a season ago and tallied 17 outright victories. Iowa spent four weeks in the top-20 which was also the best since 2021.

The Hawkeyes look to build off last season’s fifth place finish at the Big Ten Championships for the second consecutive season earning 90 points, 15 more points from the previous year.

The 31 student-athletes named on Thursday tried out and made the team. The Hawkeyes will hit the water for the first time this year on Oct. 7, in a scrimmage against the Drake Bulldogs from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. (CT) on the Iowa River.
