To end overtime session, lawmakers must navigate roadblocks

News

April 23rd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — There isn’t a deadline for the Iowa Legislature to adjourn, but there clearly are some issues that are keeping lawmakers from finishing their work. Lawmakers try to be done by the annual date when payments for their expenses end. This year payments ended on April 19, so lawmakers are several days late with plenty of work ahead of them in the coming week.

Although legislators have reached deals on some issues, such as K-12 education funding and tax rules, there’s disagreement over Medicaid oversight, transportation, infrastructure funding and whether to block state spending on the family planning organization Planned Parenthood.

At least some bills that will make up the nearly $7.35 billion budget are expected to be sorted out in special legislative committees.

Iowa’s defense looks strong heading into 2016

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa had hoped that the return of star defensive end Drew Ott would fill out its defense. The Hawkeyes should be stout on that side of the ball anyway.

Iowa suffered its first major loss in 2016 when the NCAA denied Ott’s appeal for an extra year of eligibility because of a medical hardship. But the Hawkeyes should still have one of the best defenses in the Big Ten next fall, with seven starters back from a unit that allowed just 19 points a game last season.

Iowa, which went 12-2 and 8-0 in conference play last season, concluded spring practice with a scrimmage Saturday at Kinnick Stadium in which its defense outpaced its offense.

The Daily Nonpareil reports that 40-year old Fednol Garly St. Cyr was charged Friday with first-degree kidnapping, third-degree sexual abuse and indecent contact with a child. St. Cyr could face life in prison if convicted of the kidnapping charge.

St. Cyr remains in the Pottawattamie County Jail on $500,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is set for May 2nd.

Lavon and Miss NiNi talk about peas.

ITALIAN PEAS

These peas have received “yummy” reviews and they are easy.

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
16 ounces frozen green peas (could also use fresh when available)
2 tablespoons chicken stock*
salt and pepper to taste

Heat olive oil over medium heat in skillet with lid and large enough to hold peas. Stir in onion and garlic; cook about 5 minutes. Add frozen peas; stir in stock. Cover & cook until peas are just tender, up to 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Serve hot.

*I keep a jar of Tones Chicken Base in the refrigerator. You can make any amount of chicken stock that is needed. It keeps well. A bouillon cube, canned stock or homemade all work well. Just water could also be used.
