IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa softball team defeated Indian Hills Community College, 11-2, on Friday at Pearl Field in a 9-inning exhibition.

The Hawkeye bats were hot as they scored 11 runs on 20 hits. They had eight extra base hits and had RBIs from nine different hitters. Iowa plated four runs in the third, four in the fifth and three in the ninth. Six Hawkeyes recorded a multi-hit game including junior Grace Banes and sophomore Anna Streff who both went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Junior Devyn Greer went 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI. Freshmen Georgia Lessmann and Soo-Jin Berry had back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning.

The Iowa pitchers struck out 13 Indian Hills hitters. Greer got the start in the circle for Iowa and went five innings. She allowed one run one two hits and struck out five Warrior batters. Junior Haley Downe entered in relief and went two innings allowing no runs and struck out three. Freshman Andrea Jaskowiak struck out five in two innings of work to close out the game.  

The Hawkeyes return to action on tomorrow, Saturday September 23 as they host Illinois State at Bob Pearl Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT and admission is free.

Mixed Results for Atlantic Cross Country at Cyclone Invitational

(Harlan) — Lewis Central boys cross country team ran well and had four runners place in the top ten. That impressive running feat would land the Titans with 37 points and a first-place finish. Glenwood came in at second, Clarinda at third, Woodbine at fourth, and Omaha South at fifth.

The number one runner from the meet was Ethan Eichorn finishing in first place for the Titans. Atlantic’s best runner was Bennett Whetstone who completed at 20th.

On the girl’s side Harlan would win their home meet with 79 points and an impressive first place performance from Lindsey Sonderman. Glenwood was led by third place runner Grace Berglund and finished second. Lewis Central ended up at in third place. Clarinda was fourth and had Raenna Henke who finished seventh lead the way. Woodbine finished fifth and had Addison Murdock finish at 16th overall.

The Trojans bright spot from the invitational was Claire Pellett finishing eighth, Bella Berg finishing 15th, and that would lead them to sixth.

(Updated) Collision & rollover in Atlantic Sunday morning

(Atlantic, Iowa) – One person was cited for Failure to Yield and careless driving, following a two vehicle accident late Sunday morning, in Atlantic. The collision occurred at around 11:15-a.m. at the intersection of 10th and Plum Streets, when a fully loaded U-Haul box truck driven by Matthew Ludwig, left the stop sign heading north on Plum, and struck the left side of a westbound Chevy Suburban driven by Esperensa Salatier.

Following the impact. the SUV rolled over and landed on its wheels. Several people including children were inside the SUV, but no one was injured. Police cited Ludwig. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Cass EMS, Atlantic Fire and Rescue and Atlantic Police were dispatched to the area. Numerous area residents reported their lights flickered or the power went out, about the time of the accident, but it’s unclear if the incident was responsible for the outages.

Cass County Supervisors to discuss abatement in Massena & act on road/bridge projects

(Atlantic, Iowa) – The Cass County Board of Supervisors are set to meet at 9-a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26th, in-person and online**. On their agenda is action on approving three Resolutions:

  • Resolution 2023-37, Abating the taxes, penalty & interest for parcels in the City of Massena, in accordance with the Code of Iowa.
  • And, Resolutions 2023-35 and 2023-36, awarding contracts for two Cass County road/bridge projects.

The Board is expected to receive a weekly report from County Engineer Trent Wolken, and a monthly report from General Services/Mental Health Director Debbie Schuler. Their next regular meeting is Oct. 3, 2023.

Montgomery County Supervisor’s agenda for 9/26/23

(Red Oak, Iowa) – The Board of Supervisors in Montgomery County will hold their regular, weekly meeting in person and via Zoom, beginning at 8:30-a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26th. On their agenda is approval of an agreement with the Iowa Dept. of Transportation, with regard to detour/traffic sign(s) at the intersection of Highways 34 and 48.

The Board will act on a request to abate property taxes for a parcel owned by the City of Stanton at 205 Center Street, and discuss leasing of the County Farm, with action as necessary.

Their next regular meeting is on Oct. 10th at 8:30-a.m.

Man struck by 3 vehicles on I-80 Saturday night in Des Moines

(Des Moines, Iowa) – A man who ran out into traffic on the eastbound Interstate 80 Saturday night, was struck by an SUV and thrown over the median barrier into the westbound lanes, before being hit by another SUV. The accident happened at around 8:42-p.m. near mile marker 135. After he was struck by the second SUV, the man landed in the center lane, where he was run over by a passenger vehicle.

The unidentified pedestrian died at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.

Ringgold County man arrested in Creston

(Creston, Iowa) –  Police in Creston report an arrest was made at around 2:22-a.m., Sunday (today). 23-year-old Trevor Lee Henry, of Mount Ayr, was arrested at 301 W. Adams. Henry was charged with Consume Alcoholic Beverage in Public Place-1st Offense.

He was transported to the Union County Jail where he was later released on $300 cash or surety bond.

NORMA DANT, 83, of Atlantic died Saturday, September 23, 2023 at Caring Acres in Anita. Per Norma’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a Private Family Graveside Service for Norma Dant will held in the Atlantic Cemetery. Roland Funeral Service is caring for Norma’s family and her arrangements.
