IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Developers are weighing their options after the Iowa City Council rejected a request to support plans for a 14-story housing high-rise downtown. The Press-Citizen reports the council voted 4-3 Monday against a request from architect Kevin Monson to invest $72,000 and support state tax credits to build the high-rise. Council members who voted against the measure said they had concerns about the apartments’ costs and a requested exemption to a requirement for on-site parking.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A court order says two longtime Des Moines businesses must close at the end of June if their landlord doesn’t bring the properties up to code. The Des Moines Register reports that Hagar’s Manhattan Deli and the Greenwood Lounge would have to close under the order brought by the city. City officials say the threat is a last resort after years of trying to get the owner to fix parking and sidewalk violations.

Hot, humid weekend in store for parts of Iowa, Nebraska

News, Weather

June 11th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — It looks to be a miserably hot weekend in parts of Iowa and Nebraska this weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Des Moines and central and northern parts of Nebraska and Iowa.

The service says temperature in the mid to upper 90s, combined with high humidity, will send heat index values into the triple digits in Nebraska on Saturday. The heat advisory will remain in effect for Des Moines and other parts of Iowa through Sunday evening.

The service cautions people in the advisory areas to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun and stay in an air-conditioned room, if possible.
