Iowa looks to bounce back from a blow out loss at Penn State by hosting Michigan State. The Hawkeyes were shutout for the first time in 23 years and generated only four first downs against the Nittany Lions. Kirk Ferentz says the focus has been on improvement and their ball control style of offense is not changing mid-season.
Ferentz says the key to to put last week’s game behind them.
Ferentz is confident the offense will get better.
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team continued its fall slate with a 16-12 win over Madison College in 15 innings on Friday evening.
The Hawkeyes started quickly, with junior Marcus Morgan holding the Wolfpack scoreless in the top of the first before the Iowa bats plated six runs in the bottom half. Senior Davis Cop highlighted the inning with a three-run home run. The Hawkeyes would ultimately bat around in the first inning, with senior Andy Nelson, junior Connor Hennings and redshirt sophomore Coy Sarsfield each driving in a run.
Madison College would chip away at the Iowa lead over the middle innings and eventually tie the game at seven in the 7th. After the Wolfpack took the lead in the 8th, the Hawkeye bullpen settled in. Senior Ben DeTaeye set the visitors down in order in the 9th before senior Michael Seegers and junior Ben Wilmes knocked home a pair of runs to give Iowa the 9-8 edge heading into the 10th inning.
Iowa plated some insurance in the 10th, building its lead to five, courtesy of a Madison College error and RBI base hits from Sarsfield and senior Cade Moss. Despite a comeback attempt by the Wolfpack, senior Jack Young fired an inning and two thirds of scoreless baseball, while striking out three and not allowing a baserunner. Junior Merrick Mathews finished the scoring for the Hawkeyes, unloading the bases in the 14th to secure the victory.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — University of Iowa volleyball fell to University of Indiana, 3-0, Friday evening inside Wilkinson Hall.
Fifth year Caitlan Buettner led the way for the Hawkeyes, posting 11 kills. Following closely behind was redshirt senior Delaney McSweeney with eight kills and hitting a .438 clip. Redshirt sophomore Sydney Dennis registered 16 digs on the night, and Kaia Mateo led the team in assists with 17.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (Indiana, 25-20): The Hoosiers started the set off with a point, but Iowa pushed ahead securing the next three. Mateo assisted redshirt junior Anna Davis, registering the first kill of the night for the Hawkeyes. Iowa held the lead early, until Indiana brought the set to a tie at six. The two teams fought back and forth, exchanging points through eight. The Hawkeyes took the lead once again when McSweeney and Mateo teamed up at the net to post a block. Indiana went on an offensive run, until back-to-back kills by Nataly Moravec closed the gap to one. Coming out of an Iowa timeout, the Hawkeyes clinched two points thanks to a Hoosier error and a kill by McSweeney. Bailey Ortega set up Buettner on the outside for a kill. Iowa fought to close the spread, but Indiana ended up on top.
Set 2 (Indiana, 25-19): Indiana came out with momentum, putting up the first two points. Junior Michelle Urquhart added a point to the board for the Hawkeyes, registering a kill assisted by Dennis. Iowa trailed closely behind, but a kill by Buettner put the ball back into the Hawkeye’s hands. Back-to-back Hawkeye kills by McSweeney and Buettner, followed by another Indiana error brought the spread to one and sent Indiana into a timeout. Out of the break, Moravec paired up with McSweeney at the net to register a block and bring the set to a tie at 10. The team went back and forth to tie it up again at 11. Iowa came out of a late timeout and went on a spree of attacks when Moravec, Buettner, and Mateo all posted kills to close the spread to two. The Hawkeyes battled, but could not catch the Hoosiers. Indiana took the second set.
Set 3 (Indiana, 25-16): The Hawkeyes clinched the first point of the set thanks to a McSweeney kill. The Hoosiers put up a few of points, but the Hawkeyes were quick to respond and took back the lead, 5-3. The Hawkeyes maintained their lead, 9-7, capitalizing on kills from McSweeney and Moravec and a couple Hoosier errors. The Hoosiers went on an offensive run, but a Buettner kill gave Iowa the ball back. The Hawkeyes fought to close the gap, but Indiana kept the lead. Toward the end of the set, Moravec and McSweeney stood strong at the net for a block. Indiana held its ground, taking the set and the match.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Iowa softball team fell to the University of Northern Iowa, 7-0, on Friday evening at the Robinson-Dresser Sports Complex in a 9-inning exhibition.
The Hawkeyes used five different arms against the Panthers. They allowed seven runs on eight hits and one error. Freshman Mya Clark got the start for Iowa and went two innings allowing just one UNI hit. The Panthers plated four runs in the fourth, two in the seventh and one in the ninth. Junior Haley Downe threw the fifth and sixth innings and allowed no hits and struck out one Panther hitter.
The Iowa bats strung together six hits across nine innings. Senior Sammy Diaz reached base twice in the game with a single in the first and a walk in the seventh. The Hawkeyes had their best scoring chance in the top of the third with runners on first and second with two outs. Senior Grace Banes singled to right field and but the runner coming home was thrown out to end the inning.
The Hawkeyes return to action tomorrow Saturday September 30 for day two of the Big Four Classic. They will face Iowa State at the Cyclone Softball Complex in Ames, Iowa. First pitch is scheduled for 2 P.M. CT and admission is free.
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The top-ranked University of Iowa Field hockey team fell to No. 11 Ohio State, 2-1, in its first loss on Friday afternoon at Grant Field.
The loss drops the Hawkeyes’ record to 9-1 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play.
The Buckeyes struck first in the 15th minute, scoring on a penalty corner with a goal from Makenna Webster off assists from Anne Marie Krebs and Sarah Richards.
Freshman Dionne van Aalsum tied the game scoring in the 37th minute off an assist from junior Lieve Schalk.
Ohio State took the lead with 4:18 remaining in the third quarter off an unassisted goal from Brenna Bough.

The Creston Panthers made timely plays and stymied Atlantic’s offense in a 39-0 win on Friday night at the Trojan Bowl. The Panthers hit a 30-yard pass play on a third down to keep their opening drive alive, and eventually punched in a score to grab the early lead. The two teams traded interceptions on the next two drives and then Creston forced an Atlantic punt. The next play was a 64-yard touchdown run by Brennan Hayes to put the Panthers up 12-0. They would slowly build their lead from there.
Atlantic made some nice defensive plays throughout the night but the Trojan offense just couldn’t get anything going. The Trojans had a chance to try to gain some momentum late in the first half after forcing a Creston punt and getting the ball in Panther territory. But the first play of Atlantic’s drive was a mishandled pitch play that was recovered by the Panthers. With a little over 2 minutes left in the half, Creston had enough time to drive in for a late score to make it 26-0 at halftime.
Creston would get two receiving touchdowns from tight end Josh Schaefer on their first two drives of the second half and the running clock set in place. Neither team would put any more points up as the clock melted away.
Creston quarterback Cael Turner finished 18 of 22 passing for 285 yards and five touchdowns. Creston moved to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in Class 3A District 6. Next up for the Panthers is a trip to Knoxville next week.
Atlantic dropped to 2-4 on the season overall and 1-1 in district play. The Trojans will host Perry next week, we’ll have that game on KJANTV.
The Audubon Wheelers homecoming night was special with a 34-20 tough district win against Glidden Ralston. The Wheelers had some massive contributions on the ground game from quarterback Aaron Olsen with 24 carries for 150 and 4 touchdown scores. Next to Olsen was Evan Alt who on 9 carries had over 100 yards and a touchdown score.
The Wheelers quickly came out scoring quickly, twice in the red-zone thanks to a few rushing scores from Aaron Olsen out of the shotgun. The game was suddenly 16-0. In the second quarter Colby Wallace willed his team to a touchdown score after a long drive and a two point conversion. Before halftime, Audubon had a response in the form of a touchdown drive from Evan Alt to make it 22-8.
In the third quarter Audubon found their rhythm once more and continued their rushing assault thanks to quarterback Aaron Olsen as he added on two more rushing scores to make it 34-8 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Glidden Ralston committed to the run game and found a few responses to the Wheeler defense. Colby Wallace threw two touchdowns, one to Emmett Snyder down the sideline. That would cut the lead into 34-20. But, by then the game was already over.
Audubon head football coach Sean Birks credit’s the rushing success of his team due to Evan Alt’s consistency and the teams commitment to run blocking.
Coach Birks was impressed by the skill both alt and Olsen showed while running the ball.
With the win, the Wheelers are now 5-1 and in control of their district destiny. They’re on the road facing Collins-Maxwell next week.
The Wildcats fall to 4-2 and face Coon Rapids-Bayard at home next Friday.
DES MOINES – Gov. Reynolds has announced the appointment of Renee Schulte of Urbandale to serve as Chair of the Iowa Board of Parole. Schulte began her new role today (Friday), September 29, 2023.
“Renee’s extensive background in mental and behavioral health will help protect our communities while advancing our goals of supporting the successful re-entry of parolees and reducing recidivism,” said Governor Kim Reynolds. “I look forward to working alongside Renee in this new role.”
“I’m honored for the opportunity to lead the Board of Parole during this season of government reorganization,” said Renee Schulte. “My background as a mental health professional will be an asset during this time of transition as we focus on our mission to protect the public.”
Schulte served as an Iowa State Representative from 2009 to 2013 and previously was a mental and behavioral health consultant based in Urbandale. Schulte has a Master of Arts in Counseling and Educational Psychology and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from New Mexico State University.
Schulte’s appointment is subject to confirmation by the Senate. The role was previously held by Nick Davis who resigned to pursue other opportunities. “I appreciate Nick’s dedication to serving the people of Iowa in this critical role,” said Gov. Reynolds. “He has a bright future ahead of him and I look forward to watching him advance his career in public service.”
