June 19th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

A Dallas County man was injured during a motorcycle accident Saturday evening, in central Iowa’s Warren County. The Iowa State Patrol reports 65-year old Jeffrey Lee Brown, of Dallas Center, was flown by helicopter from the scene at the 35-mile marker of Interstate 35 northbound, to Mercy Hospital, in Des Moines.

Officials say Brown was getting ready to enter a head-to-head construction zone, but his 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle went off into the construction zone, and through the barricades. Brown was ejected from his motorcycle during the crash, that happened at around 7:22-p.m., Saturday.

New Miss Iowa is starting her first victory lap of the state

After being named the second runner-up last year, Kelly Koch (pronounced “Cook”), is now reigning as the new Miss Iowa. Koch is a 20-year-old from the Des Moines suburb of Waukee. She was crowned last weekend and is now starting her victory lap of Iowa.

Kelly Koch, Miss Iowa 2016

Koch says “I am still in shock that I am the new Miss Iowa 2016 and I wake up every morning still shocked. It’s been great and I just want to make everyone proud.” Her platform is the “Pinky Swear” Foundation. She said the concept came from a young boy who was fighting cancer who used his money to aid other families fighting cancer and made his dad “pinky swear” to continue the effort. She learned about it during last year’s Miss Iowa Pageant during a trip to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Koch is preparing to be in the national spotlight in September.

She says she “Will be on the Miss America stage in less than three months. That is scary but exciting,” and Koch says she hopes that she can make her fellow Iowans proud. Among the prizes Koch received upon becoming Miss Iowa is a $10,000 scholarship she’ll use when she returns to Iowa State University next year. She plans to become a child life specialist, helping children fighting cancer and their families while in the hospital.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — After more than seven decades, the remains of a World War II veteran killed in action will be returned to his family in Iowa. The Des Moines Register reports that Palmer Haraldson’s family long ago gave up hope of being able to recover his remains.

Haraldson, a private in the Marines and native of Lincoln, Nebraska, was killed at age 31 on Nov. 22, 1943, while in combat on the Gilbert Islands in the Pacific. He was buried in a mass cemetery with 1,000 other Marines and sailors killed, and his body was declared non-recoverable in 1949. But now, his remains have been located and will return to Iowa for a burial in Fort Dodge with full military honors on June 22.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — William Byron held onto the lead on a late restart to win the NASCAR Truck Series race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday night for his second straight victory. The 18-year-old Byron held off a hard-charging Cole Custer by less than a half-second for his third victory in just nine career starts.

Custer was second, followed by Cameron Hayley, Ben Rhodes and Tyler Reddick. Byron led a race-high 97 laps before a mishap on pit road cost him the top spot. But he rallied to retake the lead and maintained it over the final three laps.

Bannister strikes out 11, Arizona beats Miami 5-1 at CWS

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nathan Bannister matched his career high with 11 strikeouts in seven innings and Arizona capitalized on Miami starter Michael Mediavilla’s rocky first inning a 5-1 victory Saturday night in the College World Series. The Wildcats (45-21), in the CWS for the first time since winning the 2012 national title, will play Oklahoma State on Monday night in a Bracket 1 winners’ game. The No. 3 national seed Hurricanes (50-13) will face UC Santa Barbara in an elimination game that afternoon.

Mediavilla hit two of Arizona’s first five batters and issued a bases-loaded walk before Jared Oliva’s two-run single made it 3-0. Zach Gibbons’ two-run double in the fifth increased the lead to 5-1. Bannister, who made his 13th straight start of at least six innings, confounded Miami batters mixing in his curveball with an upper 80s fastball.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Thomas Hatch threw a complete game, Garrett Benge singled in the only run in the fourth inning and Oklahoma State opened the College World Series with a 1-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. Hatch extended his shutout streak to 26 innings with his fourth complete game and third shutout of the season.

The Cowboys (42-20) will play Monday against Arizona. The Gauchos (42-19-1) will meet Miami, on Monday. Hatch (9-2), a third-round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs, allowed five hits, walked one and struck out seven in his dazzling 112-pitch performance for the Cowboys, who are in the CWS for the first time since 1999.

Santa Barbara starter Shane Bieber (12-4) was just was just about as good as Hatch, limiting the Cowboys to six base hits. Three of them came in succession in the fourth inning, though, and produced Oklahoma State’s only run. Corey Hassel singled to left, Donnie Walton to right and Benge through the middle to make it 1-0. Bieber escaped further damage when Conor Costello lined into a double play and Dustin Williams flew out.
