ISU works with Highway Patrol to identify problem areas on roads for animal collisions

Ag/Outdoor, News

June 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Highway Patrol estimates nearly a quarter of the damage done to its vehicles comes from collisions with animals. Patrol Sergeant Nate Ludwig says the majority of the crashes involve deer, but last year a trooper had a close encounter with a wild turkey. “It was coming through the windshield and it basically destroyed the whole inside of his car all the way to the backseat,” Ludwig says. “It took out his computer, it was quite the mess. All of the expensive equipment in our cars, any more damage than what’s done to a regular car is going to be exponentially more.”

Ludwig says the patrol is working with Iowa State University researchers to identify areas in the state that are known as “carcass crash corridors.” He says several dead animals along the road likely mean those are places where they need to be especially watchful. “We have about 350 state patrol cars in our fleet, so, what we’re trying to do is basically mitigate the cost to the taxpayer and try and identify these problem areas,” Ludwig says. “We are always on the lookout for animals on the road but if we know we’re in a specific spot, we’ll really be on the lookout.” Ludwig says the goal is to have the data programmed into the vehicle’s on-board computer system. It could be programmed to alert the officer when they enter a so-called “animal hotspot.”

Nice start: Chanticleers stun No. 1 Florida 2-1 in CWS debut

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Andrew Beckwith matched his career high with seven strikeouts, Zach Remillard doubled and tripled in runs, and Coastal Carolina upset No. 1 national seed Florida 2-1 on Sunday night in the program’s first College World Series game.

The Chanticleers of the Big South Conference pulled the stunner against the vaunted Florida pitching staff that sent to the mound two first-round picks, a second-rounder, third-rounder and 10th-rounder.

Beckwith (13-1), never drafted, put on a dazzling and efficient performance mixing sidearm and overhand deliveries. The Gators’ only run came on Jeremy Vasquez’s pinch single in the fifth. Beckwith allowed two singles the rest of the way and retired the last 10 batters in the first complete game of his career.

He set down the Gators’ 3-4-5 batters in the bottom of the ninth. Peter Alonso popped out and JJ Schwarz grounded out. That prompted the Chanticleers’ fans to start chanting “C-C-U! C-C-U!” and “Let’s go Coastal!” before Mike Rivera grounded out, with shortstop Michael Paez double-pumping on his throw to first.

The biggest victory in Coastal Carolina’s history comes in the third stage of its incredible postseason run. The Chanticleers beat host North Carolina State in the regional final and swept No. 8 national seed LSU on the road in super regionals to advance to Omaha.

(Update) 4 injured in Shelby County crash Saturday night

News

June 20th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

(In an update to our reports Sunday) The Iowa State Patrol says four people were hurt during a crash scene that spanned nearly one-half of a mile late Saturday night, in Shelby County. The Patrol says a 1996 GMC Sierra pickup driven by 27-year old Joshua Edgecomb, of Harlan, was traveling north on Highway 59 at around 10:50-p.m., when the pickup crossed the centerline of the road south of 800th Street and entered the southbound lane.

The pickup struck three other vehicles, including a 1999 Ford F-350 pickup driven by 44-year old Troy Fudge, of Corning, a 2009 Buick Enclave, driven by 35-year old Rachelle Brown, of Omaha, and a 2013 Ford pickup driven by 44-year old Scott Brown, also of Omaha. The GMC then came to rest in the west ditch off Highway 59.

Edgecomb, and his passenger, 51-year old Timmy Edgecomb, of Harlan, Rachelle Brown, and 14-year old Dakota Holderness, of Council Bluffs, were injured in the crash. Timmy Edgecomb, who was not wearing a seat belt, and Joshua Edgecomb, were flown from the scene by Life Net helicopter to the UNMC in Omaha. Brown and Holderness were transported to Myrtue Memorial Hospital, in Harlan.

The Patrol says Joshua Edgecomb is under investigation for OWI.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Luken Baker hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the ninth and TCU beat No. 5 national seed Texas Tech 5-3 on Sunday in a College World Series meeting of Big 12 rivals. The Horned Frogs (48-16) trailed by a run after Hunter Hargrove’s tiebreaking double in the bottom of the eighth. But after reliever Robert Dugger issued a walk to start the ninth and gave up a single to Evan Skoug, Baker sent a towering shot just inside the left-field foul pole into the seats above the bullpen.

Freshman closer Durbin Feltman came on and pitched a perfect ninth for his ninth save. TCU, in the CWS for the third straight year, will play a Bracket 2 winners’ game Tuesday night against the winner of Sunday night’s game between Coastal Carolina and No. 1 Florida. The Red Raiders (46-19), who went 0-2 in 2014 in their only other CWS appearance, will try to stay alive against the Coastal Carolina-Florida loser on Tuesday afternoon.

Cam Warner homered for the third time in the NCAA Tournament and sixth time this season to put TCU up 2-1 in the fifth, but Tanner Gardner doubled in a run in the bottom half to tie it.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jurickson Profar hit a two-run, bases-loaded pinch-hit single in the eighth, lifting the Texas Rangers to a 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. It was Profar’s first pinch-hit at-bat this season.

Texas swept the three-game series and has won six in a row and eight of its last nine games. The Rangers are 14-4 this month and they improved to an MLB best 16-4 in one-run games this season. St. Louis has lost five in a row — all at home. It was the first winless homestand of at least two series for St. Louis since 1983.

With two outs in the eighth, Rougned Odor doubled off reliever Matt Bowman (1-2). An intentional walk and a fielder’s choice loaded the bases. Profar hit for reliever Tony Barnette. Batting left-handed, Profar lined a 2-2 pitch into left to drive in the winning runs. Barnette (4-2) pitched 1 2/3 innings in scoreless relief for the win. Sam Dyson pitched the ninth for his 13th save in 14 chances.

Sac City, Iowa, again home to world’s largest popcorn ball

News

June 19th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

SAC CITY, Iowa (AP) — Hundreds of people convened on the western Iowa town of Sac City this weekend to construct the world’s largest popcorn ball. The Sioux City Journal reports a ball of popcorn estimated to weigh 10,000 pounds was constructed Saturday at the Noble Popcorn plant.

Sac City first claimed the largest popcorn ball in 1995, when people came together to make one weighing in at 2,225 pounds. The enormous treat traveled all over the Midwest and to the Iowa State Fair to promote Sac County’s claim as the “Popcorn Capital.”

But as the record was defeated in following years, Sac City kept building bigger popcorn balls, its last one coming in at 5,000 pounds in 2009. Saturday’s effort is intended to be noted in the Guinness Book of World Records.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Police have arrested a Sioux City teen they say stole a Coca-Cola delivery truck, then gave away the goods inside. The Sioux City Journal reports police believe the 18-year-old stole the truck as the driver was inside a business making a delivery Monday. Police say the teen then drove to a construction site in the Dakota Dune and gave away $1,000 in merchandise from the truck.

Police say he then came back to Sioux City in the truck and fled on foot when officers attempted to stop him. Police say that upon his arrest, he was found with prescription pills that were not in his name. The teen has been charged with theft, drug possession, reckless driving and other counts.
