Food Preservation Basics Course Coming Up June 28

Pre-Registration Requested by Monday

Local residents interested in food preservation are invited to Food Preservation 101, a two-hour overview of general food preservation principles. The class includes current recommendations for canning, freezing and drying, display of equipment and utensils and sources for safe and tested food preservation information.  The course will be held Tuesday, June 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Cass County Extension office in Atlantic. Fee for the course is $5 per person, and includes all materials, recipes, etc. Pre-registration is requested by Monday, June 27 by calling 712-243-1132 or emailing xcass@iastate.edu.

Cass County Extension also offers pressure canner dial gauge testing by appointment.  Dial gauge pressure canners should be tested annually for accuracy. Dial gauges will also be tested at the end of the Food Preservation 101 program on June 28 for any participants interested.

1 wanted party surrenders to authorities in Council Bluffs

One of two women wanted by Council Bluffs Police after a theft and crash incident on Monday has turned herself in. On Thursday at 10:15pm Michelle Lynn Kuhl reported to Pottawattamie County Corrections and turned herself in to Council Bluffs Police. She was then booked into Corrections for several warrants related to the Monday incident.

Warrants were issued for the arrest of 52-year old Michelle Kuhl and 27-year old Amanda Wilson, both of Council Bluffs on Tuesday. The nature of the charges have still not been publicly released. Both women fled with a child from a Council Bluffs hospital they were transported to, before police arrived. They had been taken to the facility following an accident that took place late Monday evening, after one of the women allegedly took a package off the front porch of a residence, sometime before 9-p.m., Monday. When the homeowner confronted the suspect, she jumped into an SUV occupied by a female driver and the child. The SUV was struck broadside at the intersection of 25th and Avenue E by a Chrysler Minivan. The impact flipped the SUV flipped onto its top.

The warrants for Amanda K. Wilson are still active. As with any wanted party, the public is asked not to contact these parties and notify local law enforcement if they are sighted. Anyone with information on the location of Wilson is asked to call Council Bluffs Crime Stoppers at 712‐328‐STOP (712‐328‐7867).

Shooting in Clarinda Thursday evening

Clarinda Police were called at approximately 8:39pm Thursday evening to the Parkview Apartments at 1001 E. Main St. in Clarinda for a person with a gunshot to the leg. Upon arrival officers found the victim, 45-year-old Jason Kubly of Clarinda, with gunshot wounds to both legs in the upper leg and hip area. Kubly was intially taken to Clarinda Regional Health Center and later transported by Life Net to UNMC in Omaha with non-life threatening injuries.

Police determined the suspected gunman was the victim’s brother 41-year-old Aaron Kubly of Des Moines and he was located walking near 12th and Main St. Kubly was taken into custody without incident and booked on charges of Attempted Murder (Class B felony) , Burglary 1stdegree (Class B felony), and Assault while participating in a felony (Class C felony). Kubly is being held at the Page County jail on $100,000 cash only bond.

The investigation is still on going. The Clarinda Police Department was assisted by Clarinda EMS and the Page County Sheriffs office.

Lake City man dies after crash on closed road

A Lake City man died after crashing on a closed road in Guthrie County on June 10th according to a report released by the Iowa State Patrol.  The crash happened at 3:17pm on June 10th on Frontier Road.  69-year-old Robert Core of Lake City was driving a 2003 Buick LeSabre northbound on Frontier Road south of Highway 44 in Guthrie County when his vehicle struck a pile of gravel on the road, which was closed due to resurfacing. The collision caused the vehicle to enter the southbound ditch facing northwest. Core was alert and conscious after the crash and was transported by Life Flight to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines where he later died.

Council Bluffs Fire assist man attacked by girlfriend with steak knife

The Council Bluffs Police Department responded to a call at 11:50pm Thursday night to assist the Council Bluffs Fire Department with a male covered in blood. Upon arrival officers located 56-year-old Stanley Gray of Council Bluffs who had suffered a puncture wound to his left arm just above his elbow, and laceration to the left side of his neck. Gray was transported to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs for treatment.

During the investigation officers learned that Gray had been involved in a domestic disturbance with his girlfriend, 52-year-old Candace Bell of Council Bluffs. During the disturbance Bell used a steak knife to cut Gray’s neck and stab him in the left arm. Bell was placed under arrest and charged with Willful Injury, and Aggravated Domestic Assault.

Gray was taken into surgery but his injuries are not life threatening.

Red Oak Police report three Thursday evening arrests

The Red Oak Police Department reports three arrests Thursday night from two separate incidents.

At 8:55pm officers arrested two Red Oak residents in the 300 block of 2nd Avenue.  Officers arrested 32-year-old Christopher Ivan Long and 34-year-old Bobbie Jo Bruce. Long was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault, a serious misdemeanor.  Bruce was charged with Domestic Assault, an aggravated misdemeanor.  They both were taken to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center and held on no bond.

At 11:30pm officers with the Red Oak Police arrested 46-year-old Mark Douglas Berggren of Red Oak for Driving While Revoked, a serious misdemeanor.  He was arrested at the intersection of N 8th Street and Ratliff Road in Red Oak and taken to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center and held on $1,000 cash bond.

Coastal Carolina capitalizes on Texas Tech errors, wins 7-5

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Light-hitting David Parrett had three RBIs in his first College World Series start and Coastal Carolina converted three Texas Tech errors into six unearned runs in a 7-5 victory that eliminated the Red Raiders on Thursday night.

Coastal Carolina (51-17) will play TCU in the Bracket 2 final on Friday night. The Chanticleers, in the CWS for the first time, would have to beat the Horned Frogs in that game and again Saturday to reach next week’s best-of-three finals.

Texas Tech (47-20), at No. 5, was the third and final national seed knocked out of the CWS.

The Chanticleers took a 4-3 lead in the third after they converted three hits and two infield errors into three runs.

Mike Morrison (8-1) pitched a season-high 4 1/3 innings of relief for the win, and Bobby Holmes earned his fourth save. Erikson Lanning (3-4) took the loss.
