De La Rosa strikes out 10, Diamondbacks beat Cardinals 3-0

PHOENIX (AP) — Rubby De La Rosa struck out a career-high 10 and pitched two-hit ball through seven innings, Chris Herrmann and Brandon Drury homered and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 Thursday night.

The Diamondbacks forced a split in the four-game series. De La Rosa (3-3) had been shaky this year and was demoted to the bullpen for a time but turned in his second straight strong start.

Herrmann’s two-run home run — after Drury’s blooper fell between center fielder Stephen Piscotty and shortstop Aledmys Diaz for a double — gave the Diamondbacks a 2-0 lead in the second. Drury lined a 2-1 pitch from Michael Wacha (2-1) into the left field seats for a solo shot in the fourth. It was Drury’s second home run in two days.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs traded the 28th overall pick to San Francisco on Thursday night and received the 49ers’ second-round pick along with choices in the fourth and sixth rounds in this year’s NFL draft. The 49ers used the first-round pick on Stanford guard Joshua Garnett.

Kansas City will have the 37th overall pick when the draft resumes with the second and third rounds Friday night. They will also have their original second-round choice at Number 59.

The Chiefs had their third-round pick stripped as part of the penalties handed down for a tampering case last offseason. So when runs on cornerback and wide receiver took several top players off the board at their biggest positions of the need, the Chiefs made the decision to trade down.

Father of Council Bluffs crash victim testifies in Congress

April 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — The father of a Council Bluffs woman who was killed in a hit-and-run crash has addressed members of the Congress, speaking about losing his daughter and questioning the handling of her suspected killer. KMTV reports Scott Root testified before a U.S. House committee Thursday about the events following the January death of his 21-year-old daughter, Sarah Root.

Investigators say 19-year-old Eswin Mejia was in the country illegally when he was driving drunk in Omaha and crashed into Root’s car, killing her. Authorities haven’t seen Mejia since he posted bail and was released from jail in February. He’s on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s list of most wanted suspects.

Scott Root said his family wouldn’t stop until local and federal officials are held accountable and Mejia is caught.
