LOTUS JEANETTE PAULSEN, 85, of Avoca, died Friday, July 22nd, at Myrtue Medical Center, in Harlan. Funeral services for LOTUS JEANETTE PAULSEN will be held 2-p.m Friday, July 29th, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Avoca has the arrangements.

The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Thursday, July 28th, from 5-until 8-p.m.

Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery at Avoca.

LOTUS PAULSEN is survived by:

Her daughters – Kathy (Gary) Soetmelk, of Avoca; Karen (Bill) Brandenburg, of Lake Forest, CA; Karla (David)  Christensen, of Clive, and Kerri (Marc) Mathews, of San Diego, CA.

Her sons – Neil (Deb) Paulsen, of Avoca, and Nolan (Lisa) Paulesen, of Omaha.

17 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Bluffs man arrested in connection w/ATV thefts from rural Red Oak

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reports a suspect wanted in connection with the theft of ATV’s from rural Red Oak this past week, was arrested this (Saturday) afternoon. 39-year old James Burson, of Council Bluffs, faces Class-D felony charges that include Possession of Stolen Property (valued at more than $1,000 but less than $10,000), and Burglary in the 3rd Degree. He was also charged with Possession of Burglary Tools and Theft in the 5th Degree. Burson had pending charges in surrounding jurisdictions, as well.

An investigation that led to his arrest at around 12:45-p.m, began at around 9:35-a.m, when the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a possible burglary in progress near the intersection of 290th and 150th Streets. At around 12:45-p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 3000 block of 180th Street. At that time, Burson was taken into custody. He remained in the Fremont County Jail on a $12,300 cash bond.

Burson is a suspect in the theft of two ATV’s. Both were later recovered. Anyone with information on this case, is asked to contact the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office at 712-374-2424, or the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at 1-888-434-2712.

Police ID dead toddler, unconscious mother found in Grimes

GRIMES, Iowa (AP) — Police in a suburban Des Moines city have identified a toddler found dead inside his home, alongside his unconscious mother. Police and medics responded to the Grimes home following a 911 call just after 10 a.m. Friday and say they found the body of 2-year-old Mason Wyckoff. His mother, 33-year-old Stephanie Erickson, was found unresponsive and take to a hospital is serious condition.

A child about 7 or 8 years old was found alone outside in the yard when officers arrive. The mother and dead boy were found inside. Any autopsy on the boy has been ordered. Police say they are not looking for suspects in the incident.

S.W. IA man injured in Ringgold County accident

One person was transported to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines by LifeFlight helicopter, following a single-vehicle accident late Friday night, in Ringgold County. The Iowa State Patrol says 67-year old William D. Craig, of Shannon City, was traveling north on 210th Avenue at around 11:50-p.m., when he lost control of his pickup truck. The Ford F-150 entered the east ditch. Craig, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle. Authorities say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. Further information and possible charges are pending the results of blood tests.

Iowa bike ride across state begins in Glenwood

GLENWOOD, Iowa (AP) – The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa has begun. The Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil reports that the popular cross-state bike ride began Saturday morning in Glenwood. Riders are heading toward Shenandoah, the first overnight stop early Sunday. They’ll have to endure brutal heat this year, as a heat wave promises to send Saturday’s heat index over the 100-degree mark.

Riders will end their 421-mile, seven-day ride at the Mississippi River in Muscatine on July 30. The annual ride draws thousands of participants every year.

Body of teen recovered from Missouri River

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Authorities say they have recovered the body of a Nebraska teenager who went under while swimming in the Missouri River. Rescuers were called to the scene north of Omaha’s N.P. Dodge Park around 7 p.m. Thursday after someone reported the teen missing in the water.

Omaha authorities say that on Saturday morning, a person in a cabin on the Iowa side of the river spotted a body floating in the water and called 911. Omaha authorities say that because the teen’s body was found on the Iowa side, Council Bluffs authorities have taken over the investigation.

Family members identified the victim as 17-year-old Adrian Boatman, of Omaha. They say Boatman was with an aunt and four other children Thursday when he disappeared in the river just north of NP Dodge Park.

Red Oak man arrested on a felony sex abuse charge

Police in Red Oak say a man was arrested this (Saturday) morning, on a sex abuse charge. 21-year old Wyatt Kane Bailey, of Red Oak, was taken into custody at around 11:10-a.m. in the 100  block of W. Coolbaugh Street in Red Oak, on a Class-C felony charge of Sexual Abuse in the 3rd degree. Bailey was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $10,000 bond.

Iowa, Nebraska continue to broil in heat wave hitting US

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Residents in much of Iowa and Nebraska will continue to broil this weekend as a heat wave persists across the U.S. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning through late this (Saturday) evening for western, central, and southern Iowa and the eastern half of Nebraska.

Those in the warning areas are urged to stay in air conditioning, drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks from work outside. People are also asked to check on elderly family members.

In Iowa, the weather service predicts the heat index on Saturday could exceed 105 degrees in Des Moines and 102 degrees in Waterloo and Sioux City. In Nebraska, the service says the index will hit 108 degrees in Omaha and 106 degrees in Lincoln.

Strong storms could also hit northern Iowa later today (Saturday).
