Iowa rallies past Michigan State

Sports

October 1st, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa a won the game against Michigan State but may have lost quarterback Cade McNamara in the process. The Hawkeyes scored the final 16 points in a 26-16 win over the Spartans. McNamara suffered an apparent knee injury on the second drive of the game and Deacon Hill finished 11 of 27 from 115 yards and connected with tight end Eric All for the only offensive touchdown of the game.

That’s Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz who says they will know more about the extent of McNamara’s injury early this week.

If McNamara is out Hill will be the starter. Ferentz says Hill got a lot of practice time with the first team after McNamara suffered a quad injury in an August scrimmage.

Cooper DeJean had a first half interception and his 70-yard punt return for a touchdown gave the Hawkeyes the lead for good.

Iowa is 4-1 and hosts Purdue this week.

Iowa Downs Rutgers, 1-0

Sports

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa women’s soccer defeated Rutgers, 1-0, at the Iowa Soccer Complex on Sunday, good for the ninth Hawkeye clean sheet this season. Iowa improves to 8-1-3 overall and 2-1-2 in Big Ten Conference play.

Seventh-year player Josie Durr notched her third goal this season in the 24th minute. Senior Rielee Fetty and junior Kenzie Roling each earned assists on the sequence, pushing the ball upfield to give Durr a one-on-one look with the Rutgers goalkeeper in transition.

Iowa applied pressure all afternoon, posting a 15-6 advantage in shots, including five Hawkeye in shots on goal. The Hawkeyes also took five corner kicks for the contest.

Senior goalkeeper Macy Enneking has anchored Iowa to a 0.25 goals against average this season. Iowa has allowed just three goals in 2023, which already was tops among power conference schools and tied for third nationally heading into Sunday’s game.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI

“Our defense really minimized a lot that [goalkeeper Macy Enneking] has to do. If we can continue to do that, then the rest of the group will come around. They have begun to do that, with five goals in two games this week.

Our foundation has to be defending as a whole, top to bottom, because it actually gives us the best opportunity to score. We can turn people over with our front line and our midfield. It is not about sitting low. It is actually about being proactive and creating opportunities to attack in transition.

Winning on Sundays in the Big Ten is so important. I am very proud of our effort today.”

HAWKEYE NOTABLES

  • The Hawkeyes wore pink uniforms to recognize the beginning of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
  • Goalkeeper Macy Enneking picked up her 18th career shutout, which ranks third in program history. Enneking stands at fifth in the Hawkeye record book with 21 career victories (.706 win percentage).

BYU will be the fourth and final team Iowa State will meet for the first time ever this season. The Cyclones downed both Portland State and Houston but fell to Cincinnati in the previous “first time” meetings this season.

The Matchup: Iowa State (4-7-1, 1-3 Big 12) vs. BYU (9-1-2, 2-0-2 Big 12)
Where: Cyclone Soccer Complex // Ames, Iowa
When: October 2 – 6 p.m.
Watch: Big 12 Now on ESPN+
Live Stats: cyclones.com

Leading the Cyclones
Iowa State enters the Monday night matchup coming off a 2-1 victory over Houston at home on Thursday. It was just the fourth time ISU has scored 2+ goals in a game and the Cyclones are 3-0-1 in matches where they’ve produced at least two scores.

Mira Emma leads all Cyclones in goals (4), points (11), shots on goal (14), shots (21) and assists (3). The fifth-year senior captain notched her second career brace in the team’s outing against Portland State.

Fellow seniors Salomé Prat notched her third score of the season as well as her third career game-winning goal against Houston, making her the second-highest scorer for the Cyclones. Prat now has 15 career goals and four as a Cyclone.

Goalkeeper Avery Gillahan is the lone Cyclone to have played all 1,080 possible minutes this season. She has tallied 32 saves and has faced over 150 shots through 12 contests. Gillahan recorded her second career shutout against Portland State earlier this season.

Scouting BYU
BYU comes to Ames after tying the Cincinnati Bearcats, 1-1, in Provo on Thursday evening. The Cougars outshot Cincy 26-6 but were unable to convert on anything outside of a PK in the 47th minute after giving up a goal to Cincinnati in the second minute of action.

The Cougars, who spent a pair of weeks ranked as the number one team in the country, have suffered just one setback on the year, falling at Utah State. BYU has defeated No. 21 Saint Louis, No. 1 UCLA, and No. 14 Texas on the year.

BYU averages 3.25 goals per game and is led by a myriad of players on offense. Seven Cougars have 3+ goals on the year, and four have five or more scores. Leading the way is Erin Bailey, who has seven goals, while Olivia Katoa leads the team in points with 15.

Kendell Peterson also plays a big role in the BYU attack, as she has eight assists on the year to lead the team. Peterson’s eight assists are the third most in the conference. The aforementioned Katoa has four game-winning goals, the second most in the Big 12.

Between the sticks, Savanna Mason has gotten the majority of the action as she has started nine matches and owns 21 saves. She is 7-0-1 on the year and holds a 1.24 goals-against-average.

From the Notebook

  • The Cyclones have lost just one match under Coach Fannon when scoring at least two goals. Two seems to be the magic number for the offense.
  • Iowa State leads the Big 12 in shot accuracy, placing 59% of its attempts on goal. That’s good enough for the ninth-highest ranking in the country.
  • Four Big 12 programs are ranked in the Coaches Poll this week, as BYU is No. 6, Texas Tech is ranked 14th, UCF is 19th and Texas is 21st.
  • Senior Mira Emma ranks in the top ten in ISU history in points, goals, game-winning goals and assists.
  • After program legend Jordan Silkowitz was drafted into the NWSL, a new face took the net for the Cyclones this past week, as Avery Gillahan handled goalkeeping responsibilities. Through 12 matches, Gillahan has a pair of shutouts and 32 saves.
  • Gillahan earned Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors on August 23rd for her performances during the first week of the season.

Series History
The Cyclones and Cougars will meet for the first time in both programs’ history.

Up Next
Following its two-game homestand against Houston and BYU, Iowa State will head for Texas to face off with the Baylor Bears this Thursday, October 5, at 7 p.m. Thursday’s match will be streamed live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

Audubon County Burn Ban is in effect

Ag/Outdoor, News, Weather

October 1st, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Southwest Iowa) – In response to a rash of recent field and ditch fires having taken place, another southwest Iowa County has been placed under a Burn Ban. No open burning is allowed in Audubon County by Order of the State Fire Marshall, per a request from Audubon County Emergency Management Director Tyler Thygesen, acting on behalf of the fire department chiefs in Audubon County.

The Audubon County Burn Ban is in effect now (Oct. 1st) until further notice (when conditions are such that a danger to life and/or property does not exist from opening burning, and at the discretion of the Fire Marshal). Any violation of the proclamation is a simple misdemeanor, punishable by a $200 fine.

A burn ban does not prohibit the following:  supervised, controlled burn for which a permit has been issued by the fire chief of the fire district where the burn will take place, the use of outdoor fireplaces, barbecue grills, properly supervised landfills, or the burning of trash in incinerators or trash burners made of metal, concrete, masonry, or heavy one-inch wire mesh, with no openings greater than one square inch.

Previously, officials in Shelby County announced a Burn Ban was in effect beginning Oct. 1st, and until further notice. Harrison and Crawford Counties have also instituted a ban on opening burning over the  past 10-days.
