Trojan Boys Soccer players shine at East-West All Star Cup

A pair of Atlantic players came up large in the East vs. West All-Star Cup senior All-Star Soccer Game on Saturday at Valley Stadium in Des Moines.  Atlantic’s David Thomsen scored two goals and Ryan Hawkins had two assists in the West team’s 4-1 win.

The other two West team goals were scored by local athletes as well with Jake Dotterer notching a tally along with Ethan Knudson of Harlan.

The West team was coached by Ben Schekirke of Storm Lake.

The Girls All-Star Cup is set for next Saturday, June 25th.

Cardinals recall Pham, sign more draft picks

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have recalled outfielder Tommy Pham from Triple-A Memphis. The Cardinals also optioned outfielder Randal Grichuk to Triple-A on Saturday. The moves were made before St. Louis hosted Texas.

Pham injured his oblique on opening day. He was hitting a combined .250 with four home runs and 19 RBIs in 37 games with Memphis and Double-A Springfield. Grichuk was hitting .206 with eight homers and 27 RBI in 62 games for St. Louis this season.

Also on Saturday the Cardinals signed right-handed pitcher Dakota Hudson, their third first round draft pick (34th overall) from the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Hudson, 21, is a 6-foot-5, 215-pound, college junior, who was 9-5 with a 2.55 ERA in 17 starts for Mississippi State University.  He was a starter for the No. 6 National-Seeded Bulldogs, who fell in the Super Regional to Arizona.

Hudson’s teammate at Mississippi State, right-handed pitcher Austin Sexton (18th round) was also signed today, along with St. Louis native, RHP Robbie Gordon (36th round) and seventh-round pick, catcher Andrew Knizner (KIZZ-ner).

The Cardinals have now signed 27 of their 42 draft picks including 10 of 12 players selected in the Top 10 rounds and four non-drafted free agents.  Two pitchers, RHP Connor Jones from Virginia and RHP Zac Gallen from North Carolina, remain as the only players from the Cardinals Top 10 rounds yet to sign.

The Cardinals have until July 15 at 4:00 p.m. CT, to sign players from the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

 

Iowa State Basketball adds Tennessee transfer Kosongo

The Iowa State Men’s hoops team added Tennessee transfer Ray Kasongo to the roster on Saturday.  Kosongo is  a 6-8 245 pound Power Forward that will sit out the 2016-17 season under NCAA transfer rules.  He will have two seasons of eligibility left after sitting out the upcoming season.

Kosongo is originally from Toronto, Ontario and spent one year at the College of Southern Idaho before moving on to Tennessee.  He averaged 1.4 points and 1.5 rebounds in 22 games with the Volunteers last season.

10 arrested for MIP in Montgomery County Sat. night

A call with regard to a beer party involving persons under the legal age resulted in the arrest of 10 people late Saturday night, in Montgomery County. The Sheriff’s Office said those taken into custody at around midnight, for Minor In Possession of alcohol include:

  • 16-year old Joseph Michael Hastie, of Council Bluffs.
  • 18-year old Spencer Douglas Calkins, of Corning.
  • 19-year old Cesar Alejandro Cepeda, of Shenandoah.
  • 19-year old Isaac Burt Huber, of Omaha.
  • 19-year old Jerod James Kubly, of Villisca.
  • 19-year old Jacob Lee Mattox, of Sidney.
  • 20-year old Caleb Diehl Count, of Shenandoah.
  • 20-year old Lincoln James Gilchrist Mason, of Shenandoah.
  • 20-year old Chase Paul Palmer, of Elliott, and
  • 20-year old Josie Blue Peterson, of Red Oak.

Each of those individuals were transported to Montgomery County Corrections, booked-in, and later released on a citation. An investigation into the party is ongoing. Authorities say additional charges may filed. Red Oak Police assisted in handling the incident.

Guthrie County man arrested in Adams Co. on Audubon Co. warrant

Sheriff’s officials in Adams County report a Guthrie County man was arrested early this (Sunday) morning on a warrant out of Audubon County for Probation Violation. 41-year old David Elliott, of Bayard, was taken into custody at around 2:40-a.m., following a traffic stop near the intersection of Highway 34 and Willow Avenue, in Adams County. Elliott was brought to the Adams County Jail and held, pending transfer to Audubon County.

FRANCES ROSNER BAUMHOVER, 99, of Atlantic, died June 13th, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital, in Atlantic. A Mass of Christian Burial for FRANCES BAUMHOVER will be held 11-a.m. Tue., June 21st, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake. Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Wall Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation at the church will be held from 10:00-a.m. until 11-a.m., Tuesday, with a Rosary at 9:30-a.m.

Online condolences may be left to her family at www.farberotteman.com.

Burial will be in the Wall Lake Cemetery.

Accident involving at least 3 vehicles in Shelby County Sat. night

A crash late Saturday night involving at least three vehicles in Shelby County, resulted in two people being transported to the hospital. The accident scene was about one-half mile long, and occurred between 700th and 800th Street, between Avoca and Harlan. Two people were confirmed as being transported by Defiance Rescue to Myrtue Memorial Hospital, in Harlan.

The crash occurred at around 11-p.m. Officials said Highway 59 was closed just north of Avoca early Sunday morning, while the scene remained under investigation. Initial dispatch reports indicated one vehicle struck two or more other vehicles during the crash.

1 hurt in Central IA motorcycle accident

A Dallas County man was injured during a motorcycle accident Saturday evening, in central Iowa’s Warren County. The Iowa State Patrol reports 65-year old Jeffrey Lee Brown, of Dallas Center, was flown by helicopter from the scene at the 35-mile marker of Interstate 35 northbound, to Mercy Hospital, in Des Moines.

Officials say Brown was getting ready to enter a head-to-head construction zone, but his 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle went off into the construction zone, and through the barricades. Brown was ejected from his motorcycle during the crash, that happened at around 7:22-p.m., Saturday.
