Sports

October 3rd, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says quarterback Cade McNamara is done for the season with a torn ACL. The injury occurred during the second series of Iowa’s 26-16 win over Michigan State.

Ferentz says McNamara plans on returning next season.

Ferentz says McNamara will have surgery in the next couple of weeks but will remain with the team.

With McNamara out sophomore Deacon Hill becomes the starter. He led the Hawkeyes to the victory over the Spartans.

Hill’s mobility helped the Hawkeye use some different looks on offense.

The Hawkeyes are 4-1 and host Purdue on Saturday.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell previews TCU

Sports

October 3rd, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell used the terms resilient and courageous to describe his team. The Cyclones are 2-3 after a 50-20 loss at Oklahoma and will be at home this week to play TCU.

Campbell feels the Cyclones still have a lot of potential.

Iowa State’s run game perked up at Oklahoma with 150 yards. Campbell wants to see that progress continue.

The Cyclone defense has given up too many big plays and Campbell says a better pass rush is part of the solution.

Campbell says they need to generate pressure without blitzing too much.

Midwest economic survey finds recession looms late this year or early in 2024

News

October 3rd, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The Midwestern economy is headed toward recession — soon, according to the latest projection from Creighton University and its monthly survey of business leaders in Iowa and eight other states. Creighton economist Ernie Goss says the overall Business Conditions Index rose slightly for the region into the positive growth category, but Iowa’s economy is still showing negative growth.

The hiring trends for the Midwest during September were “not good,” Goss says, though the figures were up slightly from August.

The Midwest’s regional manufacturing economy has weakened from earlier in the year, Goss says, and it’s weakened from the same period last year, while inflation remains troublesome.

According to U.S. International Trade Association data, Iowa’s manufacturing exports expanded from just over nine-billion dollars for the first seven months of 2022 to ten-billion for the same period in 2023.

Ernie Goss

That’s a growth rate of better than nine-percent. For the first seven months of each year, the state’s leading manufacturing export, machinery, soared by almost 24-percent between 2022 to 2023. On the zero-to-100 scale where 50 is growth neutral, Goss says Iowa’s Business Conditions Index for September rose to a weak 48.5, up slightly from 47.9 in August.

Cary, Enneking Earn Big Ten Player of the Week Honors

Sports

October 3rd, 2023 by Asa Lucas

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa women’s soccer team captains Samantha Cary and Macy Enneking were named conference players of the week on Tuesday.

Cary was recognized as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season, while Enneking earned her first Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week honors of her career.

The two defensive standouts led Iowa to a pair of clean sheets last week in dominating wins over Purdue, 4-0, and Rutgers, 1-0.

A fifth-year player and second-year captain, Cary anchors the Iowa defense with a team-high 1,039 minutes played this season.

Cary played 175 of 180 total minutes last week, including the full 90 minutes in the shutout against Rutgers. She also notched an assist against the Scarlet Knights, helping fellow captain Maggie Johnston to a goal in the 22nd minute that put Iowa ahead by two scores.

Cary previously earned back-to-back Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week awards this season on Sept. 5 and Sept. 12.

Enneking is now up to eight credited shutouts, which ties for first nationally. Enneking’s 0.253 goals against average ranks third in the country while her .913 save percentage ranks fourth. She leads Big Ten goalkeepers in each of those statistical areas.

Enneking hauled in three saves to preserve the shutout against Rutgers. The Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week honors are a first for Enneking, who was named Honorable Mention Goalkeeper of the Week by Top Drawer Soccer on Sept. 5 this season.

This is Enneking’s first conference player of the week honor since being named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on March 22, 2021.

Enneking’s 18 career shutouts rank third in program history. She is fifth in the Hawkeye record book with 21 career victories (.706 win percentage).

The Hawkeyes have recorded nine shutouts this season, the most for an Iowa team since the 2019 season. Iowa has allowed just three goals all year, ranking second nationally in goals against average (0.25). Iowa’s .750 shutout percentage ties for fourth nationally through 12 games.

Iowa travels to Nebraska on Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT). The Hawkeyes return to the Iowa Soccer Complex on Oct. 12 for a showdown with Northwestern at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on Big Ten Network.

Pottawattamie County to Participate in Operation Green Light in Support of Local Veterans

News

October 3rd, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Council Bluffs, Iowa) – In advance of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, Pottawattamie County announced that its Veterans Service Office, and primary signage for the Pottawattamie County Jail and Sheriff’s Office, will soon be illuminated green. The display from November 6th through the 12th is part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide effort uniting counties to support military veterans. The initiative, led by the National Association of Counties (NACo), raises awareness around the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels to assist veterans and their families. The announcement came during today’s (Tuesday’s) meeting of the Pott. County Board of Supervisors.

“With designation as a Green Light for Veterans County, Pottawattamie County hereby declares from October through Veterans Day, November 11th, 2023, as a time to salute and honor the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform transitioning from Active Service,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Brian Shea.

Now in its second year, Operation Green Light is spearheaded by NACo and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, building upon successful efforts by the New York State Association of Counties and the NYS County Veteran Service Officers’ Association in 2021. In 2022, over 300 counties participated in Operation Green Light.

“For centuries, men and women have stepped forward offering Courage, Bravery, and Sacrifice to protect the freedoms we as a people, we as Americans cherish, no matter the cost, asking nothing in return for their Commitment to protect the innocent and uphold our Nations Values,” said Peggy Becker, Pottawattamie County Veterans Service Office Administrator. “In the words of John Fitzgerald Kennedy ’As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.’ It is important for us as a community to recognize, honor, and celebrate those that chose to serve others,” said Becker. “We want to make sure that our veterans know that we are grateful for their service and for their families sacrifices. Operation Greenlight is a way for every business and every individual citizen to say, ‘I see you’ and show their support and simply say Thank You!”

In addition to lighting county buildings, bridges, and other meaningful landmarks, residents, businesses, and other organizations are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb in their home to a green bulb. This can be an exterior light that neighbors and passersby see, or an interior light that sparks a conversation with friends. By shining a green light, we let our veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported.

“Operation Green Light is a gesture of support and appreciation for the public service of our veterans,” said NACo Executive Director Matthew Chase. “With hundreds of counties coming together to light everything from bridges to courthouses, we know veterans across the country will see and feel the gratitude we all feel for their service and sacrifices.” Counties and residents across the country are sharing their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.

CAM Cougars continue dominant undefeated season

Sports

October 3rd, 2023 by admin

The fourth ranked team in Eight-Player football the CAM Cougars have been as dominant as they have impressive. The Cougars are 6-0 on the season and no team has come within 20 points of the Cougars. CAM defeated Sidney last Friday night in a 64-6 final score but led 38-0 after the first quarter. The Cougars have outscored their opponents 350-52 on the season and look to continue that dominating display as the season moves forward and the Playoffs approach.  Head Coach Barry Bower knew it would be tough last week without a couple starters on both ends of the ball and made it an emphasis to have the next man up mentality and put some of his young players in the best positions to succeed.

The Cougars have been led offensively all season by junior quarterback Chase Spieker who tallied five touchdowns vs Sidney last week and continues to improve.

Coach Bower said his team’s success comes from one word he uses over and over and described it as the most powerful word in the dictionary.

Coach Bower said his teams main focus is on each and every day trying to get better and improve, you can’t dwell on the past or look forward a few weeks but rather focus on the task in front of them

The fourth ranked CAM Cougars led by head coach Barry Bower welcome in the 3-3 Fremont-Mills Knights this coming Friday. Listen to the full interview with Coach Bower below.
