Mother uses safe haven law, gives infant to Iowa hospital

June 17th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — State officials say they have used Iowa’s safe haven law to take custody of a newborn baby whose mother turned over care of the girl to a hospital. The Department of Human Services announced Friday the infant was given to an Iowa hospital June 7 and then released to the custody of the state agency.

It’s the 26th time the law has been used to turn over care of an infant since it was approved following a 2001 case, in which a teenage mother in eastern Iowa killed her home-delivered newborn. The state didn’t specify the city where the baby was given to the hospital. Iowa law allows parents to hand over custody of babies up to 14 days old without fear of prosecution.

Deputies arriving on scene determined that a van driven by Liberty Armstrong of Corning was sitting at the stop sign at the intersection of Highway 148 and Highway 34 facing south.  A semi tractor trailer driven by Raymond Slama of Wyoming was traveling westbound on Highway 34 when Armstrong attempted to cross the highway failing to see the approaching semi.  The two vehicles collided spinning the van 180 degrees and Armstrong was ejected from the van.  Armstrong was then taken by helicopter to Des Moines and treated for what were determined to be minor injuries.  Slama was uninjured in the accident.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.  The Adams County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Adams County Fire and Rescue and the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office.  The Office wants to thank all of the witnesses that stayed at the scene and assisted the injured and gave their statements.

ISU economist says farmers should take advantage of corn and soybean price increase

Ag/Outdoor

June 17th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Corn and soybeans have rallied in recent weeks, and an Iowa State University Agriculture Economist says farmers should take advantage that increase. Chad Hart says the price rally is due to a combination of factors. “The dollar has gotten weaker, made our corn, soybeans, even our livestock products a little cheaper to the rest of the world, so we’ve seen more sales that way,” Hart says. “The weather problems in South America not only delayed their harvest, but destroyed some crops down there. Again, opening up a few more export markets for us at a time when typically when the world is sourcing more out of South America.”

Hart says July 4th is typically a time when farmers can see what the markets will do for the remaining crop season. However, he believes that time frame may have been pushed up a little. He says this year’s price trends looks familiar to a rally early in last year’s planting season. “And I am wondering if we are going through that same process this year, but if you will, a little longer, a little stronger this year than we saw last year,” Hart says. The Iowa State University Agriculture Economist says farmers may want to look at selling some of their stored grain during this rally. He also says farmers may want to look at ways at protecting themselves from any price decline as it relates to their new crop that is still in the fields.

He says the new crops represent a marketing opportunity and farmers may look to put in some price floors or option contracts. Hart says the length of the rally depends on Mother Nature and how quickly the El Nino weather pattern turns into a La Nina weather pattern.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have added another promising prospect to their 25-man roster, calling up catcher Willson Contreras from Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs dipped into their farm system again after promoting outfielder Albert Almora Jr. from Iowa last week with Jorge Soler going on the disabled list.

The 24-year-old Contreras is getting his first look in the majors after dominating in the minors. The Cubs want him to learn from veteran catchers Miguel Montero and David Ross. To make room, Chicago designated catcher Tim Federowicz for assignment before Friday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Contreras, who was not in the lineup, was batting .350 with nine home runs and 43 RBIs at Iowa. He was signed by Chicago as a non-drafted minor league free agent out of Venezuela in July 2009.

The announcement came one day after The Associated Press made inquiries on the matter. Novak said Thursday his retirement had nothing to do with any problems in the bureau.
