Council Bluffs officials not worried about proposed casino

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Officials in Council Bluffs say they aren’t worried that a proposed new casino in Cedar Rapids will divert businesses away from their city’s three casinos. The Daily Nonpareil reports that local gaming officials say the casino would likely have a limited impact if it gets built.

Jill Beasley, marketing director for Harrah’s and Horseshoe casinos in Council Bluffs, says the a Cedar Rapids casino might draw visitors from Des Moines, but most of Harrah’s and Horseshoe’s customers come from the Council Bluffs-Omaha metro area.

The proposed $40 million “boutique” casino in Cedar Rapids would have parking on the first floor, a gambling area on the second and commercial office space on the third and fourth floors. It wouldn’t include any restaurants, hotels or other entertainment venues.

Chiefs waive DL Nunez-Roches, elevate OL Devey to roster

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have waived defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches and elevated offensive lineman Jordan Devey from the practice squad for Sunday’s game in Houston.

Kansas City needed depth along the offensive line after declaring their starting guards, Laurent Duvernay-Tardiff and Parker Ehinger, out for the Texans. Duvernay-Tardif is dealing with an ankle sprain and Ehinger is out with a concussion.

Devey gives the Chiefs seven healthy offensive linemen, which is coach Andy Reid’s preference. The Chiefs are also expected to be without running back Jamaal Charles, who is doubtful as he tries to work his way back from surgery last season to repair the torn ACL in his right knee. Charles has not played in a game since Week 5 last season.

North Dakota St tops No. 13 Iowa on final play

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Cam Pedersen kicked a 37-yard field as time expired and North Dakota State pulled off a 23-21 upset of No. 13 Iowa on Saturday for its sixth straight win over an FBS opponent. The Bison went for a 2-point conversion down 21-20 with 3:41 left, but couldn’t punch it in. North Dakota State’s defense then held, and quarterback Easton Stick’s 29-yard run put the Bison in position for the biggest win in school history.

The loss was just the fourth by a ranked FBS team to an FCS school. North Dakota State isn’t just another Football Championship Subdivision team, though. The Bison have won the last five FCS national titles. Against the Hawkeyes, they ran for 239 yards and held Iowa to 231 total yards.

“Am I shocked that we lost? Yeah, to an extent. But these guys came ready to play,” Iowa defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson said. Stick had 124 yards passing and a touchdown for the Bison (3-0), who also snapped Iowa’s nine-game home winning streak.

C.J. Beathard had three TD passes for Iowa (2-1). But the Hawkeyes ran for just 34 yards on 25 carries. “I thought we’d be able to run the ball a little bit better just because that’s what we do,” Beathard said. The Hawkeyes can forget about the playoffs. Barring something extraordinary, it’s tough to imagine the committee letting in a team that lost to an FCS school — even one as talented as North Dakota State.

The Hawkeyes open their first nine-game Big Ten season with a trip to Rutgers next weekend, their first road game and their first-ever against the Scarlet Knights. It should be, along with an October 15 meeting at Purdue, the easiest game the Hawkeyes will play outside of Iowa City.

TCU rebounds with 41-20 win over Iowa State to open Big 12

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Kyle Hicks ran for 117 yards with a long touchdown and also scored on a 25-yard catch as TCU beat Iowa State 41-20 on Saturday in the first game this season that counts in the Big 12 standings. Hicks went 64 yards untouched to put TCU (2-1, 1-0 Big 12) up 10-0 in the first quarter, after his path was cleared by 315-pound tackle Joseph Noteboom’s downfield block of a defensive back. On the opening drive of the second half, Kenny Hill hit Hicks wide open in the end zone behind the secondary for a 31-7 lead. Iowa State, with first-year coach Matt Campbell, is 0-3 for the first time since 1997.

While the Horned Frogs bounced back from a double-overtime home loss to Arkansas that knocked them out of the Top 25, receiver and returner KaVontae Turpin sustained an apparent left leg injury and had to be helped off the field the play before Hicks’ TD catch. Turpin entered the game the national leader with 236 all-purpose yards per game, but had only two caches for 8 yards and one kickoff return for 28 yards.

Another pre-noon kickoff for the Cyclones next Saturday when they go home to play San Jose State in their last non-conference game.

Football fans in Le Mars see fireball erupt from horrific wreck

September 17th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Hundreds of football fans at a homecoming game in northwest Iowa witnessed a horrific traffic accident that produced an explosion and sent two people to the hospital. It happened at about eight Friday night in Le Mars, during the halftime of the Le Mars Gehlen game against Woodbury Central. The marching band was performing when a motorcycle collided head-on with a pick-up on the street just beyond the field. The motorcycle slid beneath the pick-up, a fire was sparked and fans in the stands saw a ball of fire erupt. Officials believe it was the gas tank on the motorcycle that exploded.

Le Mars Fire Chief Dave Schipper was at the football game and quickly determined two people were injured. “The fortunate thing was we had an ambulance right at the football field so those people received medical treatment within minutes and, of course, the fire department responded to put the fire out,” Schipper says. The game was suspended for nearly a half an hour while emergency crews worked at the scene. The fire chief wasn’t just concerned about the two people directly involved. He worried Woodbury Central fans on the visiting sideline were too close to the fire.

“They got on the PA right away and told visiting folks to please exit the bleachers and go to the north side, leave everything there, just get out of those bleachers,” Schipper says. “We had the pick-up fully engulfed. We had gasoline on fire. We had explosions happening with the tires. We’ve got power lines right above there, some bigger trees and things like that, so we wanted those people to clear out of there for their safety.” Heavy smoke from the fire drifted across the playing field and over the bleachers on both sides of the field. Fire fighters used foam to smother the fire.

The accident remains under investigation, but the accident report from Le Mars Police had identified the drivers of both vehicles. Twenty-one-year-old Dillon McKinney of Le Mars was the driver of the motorcycle. He was taken to the hospital in Le Mars, then airlifted to a hospital in Sioux City for treatment of severe injuries. Twenty-three-year-old Samantha Priekset of Le Mars was a passenger on the motorcycle. She was treated at the hospital in Le Mars and has been released.

Surprisingly, the driver of the pick-up and his passenger were both able to escape without injury. The vehicle was completely destroyed by the fire.
