Critical blood shortage: Red Cross urges blood and platelet donors to give now

News

July 25th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the American Red Cross are once again putting out a plea for donations of blood and blood platelets. Anna Sanderson, Donor Recruitment Director with the Midwest Blood Services Region, says while thousands of people from across the country responded to the emergency request for blood and platelet donations issued by the American Red Cross in early July, a critical blood shortage remains. The Red Cross urges eligible donors to give now to help ensure blood is available throughout the rest of the summer to meet patient needs.

Am. Red Cross logoAt times, blood and platelets are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in, which impacts the ability to rebuild the blood supply. Right now, the Red Cross has less than a five-day blood supply on hand. The Red Cross strives to have a five-day supply at all times to meet the needs of patients every day and be prepared for emergencies that may require significant volumes of donated blood products.

Sanderson says “The Red Cross continues to have an emergency need for blood and platelet donors to give now and help save patient lives. We are grateful for those who have already stepped up this summer to give and want to remind those who are eligible that hospital patients are still counting on them to roll up a sleeve.”

Blood and platelets are needed for many different reasons. Accident and burn victims, heart surgery patients, organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may all need blood. Donors of all blood types are urgently needed to help restock the shelves. The Red Cross is thanking those who come in to donate blood or platelets between July 25th and Aug. 31st by emailing them a $5 Amazon.com gift card claim code.

To schedule an appointment to donate, use the free Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass online health history questionnaire are encouraged to help reduce wait times.

DES MOINES—Recent rains have improved groundwater levels across Iowa, while the National Drought Monitor shows about a third of the state still rated as abnormally dry. Heavy rains that fell on July 19 will be reflected in the next update.

Substantial rainfall during July has improved shallow groundwater conditions in central Iowa and most of southeast Iowa from slight drought to normal.  A small region of southeast Iowa continues to be in slight drought conditions.  Shallow groundwater levels in most of northwest, southwest and northeast Iowa continue to be above normal for July.DNR News

In the past two weeks, the average statewide rainfall has been about 4.02 inches, nearly double the normal amount for this period. Two-week rain totals varied from a 1.56 inches at Akron up to 9.01 inches near Red Oak.

Temperatures across Iowa have averaged near normal for the period, just 0.4 degrees lower than typical July readings. Streamflow conditions remain above normal for most of the state. For a thorough review of Iowa’s water resource trends, go to www.iowadnr.gov/watersummaryupdate.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A University of Iowa football player says he was playing “Pokemon Go” in a public park when he was mistaken for a suspected bank robber, surrounded by police and searched at gunpoint. Faith Ekakitie writes on Facebook that he feared for his life Wednesday in Iowa City. He explains that a bank had been robbed nearby and that he matched the suspect’s description of a “large black male, wearing all black, with something on top of his head.” He says he was wearing goggles on his head at the time.

Ekakitie says he understands why police did what they did. He says he had headphones in and didn’t respond to police commands. He thanks Iowa City police for their professionalism.  A police spokesman chalks up the episode to “unfortunate timing.”

Green said the Inspectors are coming from the Iowa Department of Labor and U-S Consumer Product Safety Commission. Green said it’s unusual for this type of accident to happen, here. He said “We’ve been fortunate. We haven’t had anything like this at the Cass County Fair in my memory, and I’ve been coming to this fair since I was a kid. It’s just one of those things, I guess.”

The names of those injured have not been officially released, but early reports from law enforcement said the injured included an adult female and four teens (two females and two males). Green says two of the teens walked home following the accident. Their mother took them to the hospital. The ride is officially shut down on this, the last full day of the fair.

(Update) – Louisiana man faces charges in connection with pickup vs. tent accident

News

July 25th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

(In an update to our earlier report) A Florida man was listed in serious condition this (Monday) morning, after the tent he occupied was struck by a pickup truck Sunday morning, in Fremont County. Lt. Mike Miller with the Iowa State Patrol told KJAN News 67-year old James A. Foley, of Middleburg, FL., was transported by helicopter to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, for treatment. Foley was in a tent on the 59er Motel and campgrounds in Shenandoah, when it was hit by a 1996 Ford F-250 pickup driven by 55-year old Danny T. Cardin, of Homer, Louisiana.

The accident happened at around 11:35-a.m., Sunday. The Patrol says the pickup was traveling down a private drive when it struck the tent Foley occupied, and dragged the tent, with Foley inside, underneath the truck, for about 50-feet. Cardin continued to drive his truck until he parked it at his campsite.  Miller said Foley was not a RAGBRAI rider, but may have been a vendor for the event, although that was not for certain.

Lt. Miller said Cardin was being held in the Fremont County Jail on charges that include Leaving the Scene of a Serious Injury Accident and Serious Injury by Motor vehicle. Those charges could be upgraded, depending on Foley’s status at the hospital. Miller said alcohol was suspected as a cause of the accident.
