Arizona’s Cloney shuts down Chanticleers in 3-0 Game 1 win

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — JC Cloney pitched a four-hitter and Ryan Aguilar drove in a pair of runs, leading Arizona to a 3-0 victory over Coastal Carolina in Game 1 of the College World Series finals on Monday night. The Wildcats (49-22) can wrap up their second national championship in five years with a win today (Tuesday).

Cloney extended his scoreless innings streak at the CWS to 16. The junior left-hander pitched seven innings in the Wildcats’ 3-0 win over UC Santa Barbara last Wednesday. Cloney (8-4) allowed four singles, walked three and struck out six in the second complete game of his career.

Danny Duffy pitches Royals to 6-2 win over Cardinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Danny Duffy matched a career best with eight sharp innings, the Royals kept swinging hot bats and Kansas City routed the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 on Monday night to open a four-game, two-city series.

Kendrys Morales went 4 for 4 and drove in two runs, and Eric Hosmer also had a pair of RBIs as the Royals roughed up Adam Wainwright (6-5) to snap a four-game losing streak to their cross-state rival.

Duffy (3-1) served up a two-run homer to Matt Holliday in the first before settling into a nice rhythm, keeping the Cardinals off balance with pinpoint control. The left-hander struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter while breezing through a lineup that scored 11 runs the previous day against Seattle.

The teams are in action this evening at 7:15, with the pre-game show at 6:20, on KJAN.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — New data from the Iowa Department of Transportation shows 42 more people have died on Iowa roads in 2016 than at the same time last year. The Des Moines Register reports seven people were killed in traffic accidents over the weekend, bringing the total number of motor vehicle deaths to 170 people. That’s 30 more deaths from the five-year average of 140.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A judge has ordered the second trial for a former lottery official accused of fixing jackpots in several states to be held outside central Iowa because of extensive media coverage. The Des Moines Register reports that a trial date and location for Eddie Tipton will be set later.

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — Mason City police say someone stole a rifle and shotgun from an unmarked police vehicle. Police Chief Jeff Brinkley says the weapons were stolen over the weekend from the back seat of a police vehicle parked on a Mason City street. An officer had placed the weapons on the back seat while dealing with a maintenance issue related to the trunk, and one of the doors may have been unlocked. Brinkley says the weapons are a Colt M-16 A1 rifle and a Remington 12-guage shotgun.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad has no intention of becoming Donald Trump’s running mate. When asked at his weekly news conference whether he’d consider joining a Trump ticket he declined to answer with an emphatic no, but said he didn’t want to get into that type of speculation.

(Update 5:30-a.m.: Fred Scalatta with the Department of Corrections says Formaro was located around 2:30 a.m. and taken into custody. He will now be housed in a medium security prison. No details about where Formaro was found have been released yet.)

Officials with the Iowa Department of Corrections said early this (Tuesday) morning, that Timothy Joseph Formaro, Jr., an inmate housed at the Newton Correctional Release Center was not present during routine count at 9:20-p.m., Monday, and after further search by security staff was been determined that Formaro escaped from the facility. The Newton Correctional Release Center is a minimum security facility.

The Iowa State Patrol, Jasper and Polk County Sheriff’s Departments and Fifth Judicial District Warrant Team have been notified, and are assisting in the public search of Formaro. He’s a white male, 5’8″ tall, 202 Lbs., Brown Hair and Blue Eyes with Left Forearm and Right Shoulder tattoos.

Formaro is serving a 25 year sentence from Clarke County for Prohibited Acts and Domestic Abuse assault. Information as to Formaro’s whereabouts should be immediately reported to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department at 641-792-5912 or 911. Due to the ongoing search and investigation, no additional information is available at this time.

Cubs call up Peralta to help struggling bullpen

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have promoted right-hander Joel Peralta from the minors to help their bullpen for the start of a series at the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs signed the 40-year-old reliever this month after he was released by Seattle, where he was 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA. Chicago’s bullpen struggled during a 1-6 slump last week. Manager Joe Maddon said Monday that Peralta will be a boost in the clubhouse as well, comparing it to having another coach to help the younger players.

Right-handed reliever Gerardo Concepcion was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. He gave up a run during a 6-1 loss to the Marlins on Sunday. The bullpen has been hit hard in Chicago’s last four losses.

Bluffs bank robbery suspect arrested

Officials with the Council Bluffs Police Department says as a result of their investigation into a bank robbery that occurred late Monday morning, they were able to identify a suspect in the Robbery. The suspect, 52-year old Henry J. Godina, of Council Bluffs, was taken into custody at approximately 2:27 p.m. in the 3000 Block of Ave H. Godina was booked into the Pottawattamie County Jail for Robbery in the 2nd Degree.

Just after 10-a.m., Monday, officers were called to the U-S Bank at 2901 W. Broadway Street in Council Bluffs, where a robbery had just occurred. Officials say the suspect (later identified as Godina) entered the bank and proceeded to the teller window, where he produced a note demanding money and indicating that he was in possession of a firearm. The man received an undetermined amount of cash from the bank and fled the area in a Blue late 1990’s model Ford Expedition or Mercury Mountaineer.

Adair County Sheriff’s report

Adair County Sheriff Jeff Vandewater reports a Madison County man was arrested Friday afternoon for 3rd Degree Theft, and Trespassing. 24-year-old Benjamin Riser Feller, of Dexter, was subsequently cited and released from the scene.

And, 62-year-old Gregg Charles Smith, of Stuart, was arrested Thursday for OWI 1st offense, failure to maintain control and failure to provide proof of financial liability. His arrest followed an investigation into a single vehicle accident. The Sheriff says Smith admitted he had consumed alcoholic beverages. Smith’s breath test results were above the legal limit of .08. He was being held in the Adair County Jail on $1,000 cash, or surety bond.
