Trial set for man accused of shooting Sioux City officer

News

September 30th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Opening statements are expected to be delivered Friday in the trial of a man accused of shooting a Sioux City police officer. Isaiah Mothershed has pleaded not guilty two counts of attempted murder and five counts of robbery. Authorities say Mothershed pulled a gun from a couch while his hands were handcuffed behind his back and then shot Officer Ryan Moritz in a leg while being arrested Feb. 7.

Police say that as officers struggled with Mothershed, the gun fired again, wounding Mothershed in a leg. Mothershed also is accused of several robberies and break-ins and of firing a shot at a homeowner who interrupted a break-in.

Tyson Foods says its Tyson Fresh Meats subsidiary in Council Bluffs will spend 27 million dollars to expand production at the plant to be able to make more of its beef and pork products and meal kits that it distributes to grocery stores. A company news release says the expansion will allow them to add 350 jobs to bring the total number of employees to 14-hundred. The company also operates a pepperoni plant in Council Bluffs and a bacon plant in Omaha, for a total of two-thousand employees in the Council Bluffs-Omaha area. Work on the expansion in Council Bluffs is already underway, and the company says it should be completed by July of 2017.
