Large harvest equipment rolling on Iowa roads

Ag/Outdoor, News

October 3rd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Iowa motorists are reminded harvest time is underway and drivers should be prepared to encounter combines and other large farm equipment on the road. Chuck Schwab, a safety specialist with Iowa State University Extension, says rear end collisions are among the most common crashes involving farm machinery. “Motor vehicles go at a much higher rate of speed than agricultural equipment, so you have this fast closing distance and rear end collisions are very prominent if you’re not prepared to stop,” Schwab says.

When attempting to pass farm machinery, Schwab urges motorists to be patient and make sure they know the farm equipment won’t be turning left. “You need to make sure you’re in line and know that they’re not turning left, watch for the signals and the movement of equipment before you make that pass,” Schwab says.

In addition to roadway collisions, Schwab says the most common type of farm vehicle related accidents include roll-overs involving tractors, lawnmowers, and all terrain vehicles.

Iowa homecoming queen’s surprise gesture

News

October 3rd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

An Iowa high school’s homecoming queen shared her crown with a classmate late last week and by Sunday night video of the kind gesture had been viewed nearly 200-thousand times on the internet. During a school assembly on Thursday, Katie Gassman was crowned the homecoming queen for Wayne Community Schools in Corydon. Gassman had passed a note to the adults in charge of the ceremony and asked that it be read if she won. The teacher who read it choked back emotion as she told the crowd what that note said.

“Tonight I would like to share my crown with the girl who always has a smile on her face and has overcome so many hardships,” the woman said. That girl is Chelsea Sloan, who has Down Syndrome, kidney problems and arthritis — and she was part of the queen’s court, too. Chelsea’s mother was the one videotaping the scene and you can hear her surprised AND pleased reaction to the announcement. The crowd in Corydon cheered as Chelsea stood between her school’s homecoming king and queen and posed for pictures, with the crown on her head.

Roethlisberger has 5 TD passes, Steelers thump Chiefs 43-14

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ben Roethlisberger threw five touchdowns passes for the fifth time in his career and the Pittsburgh Steelers throttled the Kansas City Chiefs 43-14 on Sunday night. A week after suffering the franchise’s worst loss in 27 years, the Steelers (3-1) responded by overwhelming the erratic Chiefs (2-2).

Roethlisberger hit Antonio Brown — wearing cleats featuring the profile of golf great and western Pennsylvania native Arnold Palmer — for a pair of scores. Roethlisberger also found Markus Wheaton, Darrius Heyward-Bey and Jesse James for touchdowns as the Steelers emphatically rebounded from a 31-point meltdown in Philadelphia. The quarterback finished 22 of 27 for 300 yards and a rating of 152.5, just shy of a perfect 158.3 rating.

Le’Veon Bell ran for 144 yards on 18 carries and caught five passes for 34 yards in his return from a three-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Bell’s return brought Pittsburgh’s high-powered offense back to full strength for the first time this year, though he spent most of the first half watching Roethlisberger go to work.

The Steelers scored a franchise-record 22 points in the first quarter as their defense forced a pair of turnovers Roethlisberger quickly converted into touchdowns. Pittsburgh reached the end zone three times in a span of six offensive snaps in the quarter and added a two-point conversion on top of it while the Chiefs floundered in the rain. Smith was 30 of 50 for 287 yards and two inconsequential fourth-quarter touchdowns after things were well out of hand. Spencer Ware ran for 82 yards but also fumbled in the first quarter that kick-started Pittsburgh’s record-setting run. The Chiefs allowed four sacks to a team that came in with an NFL-worst one on the season and could do little right.

Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles ran one time for 6 yards in his first game since tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last October. It was perhaps the lone bright spot in a loss that played in stark contrast to a romp over the New York Jets last week in which the Chiefs forced eight turnovers. Charcandrick West, who helped fill in during Charles’ absence was inactive due to an ankle injury.

Pittsburgh’s 43 points were the most allowed by Kansas City in a regular season game since Andy Reid took over in 2013. The Chiefs are off next week before traveling to take on the suddenly dangerous Oakland Raiders on Oct. 16. Kansas City is 5-1 against the Raiders under Reid.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A win on the final day of the season was not enough for the St. Louis Cardinals, who missed the playoffs for the first time since 2010. Matt Carpenter homered and Randal Grichuk keyed a six-run seventh-inning with a two-run double to lead the Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-4 Sunday.

But the Cardinals (86-76) were eliminated while still on the field when San Francisco (87-75) beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-1 and earned the second NL wild card.

St. Louis outfielder Matt Holliday was brought into the game momentarily to play left field in the ninth inning. He was given a standing ovation and taken out before the first pitch. The Cardinals announced Friday they plan to decline his 2017 option and allow him to become free agent.

Dordt College offers new Christian vocational programs

News

October 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Christian college in northwest Iowa is starting a new vocational program that will prepare students for work while giving them a foundation in their faith. Dordt College President Erik Hoekstra told the Sioux City Journal the new two-year Pro-Tech program will fill a gap in Christian education offerings in the area.

The new program will enroll as many as 40 students next fall and offer them a combination of Christian education and vocational training. Hoekstra says he believes there’s a need for such a program because of the number of students graduating from Christian high schools who might want a two-year vocational degree but didn’t have a Christian option.

Council Bluffs works to repair and upgrade its levee system

News

October 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Council Bluffs officials are working to strengthen the levees protecting the western Iowa city before homeowners are forced to pay higher premiums for flood insurance. The Daily Nonpareil reports the city wants to complete the levee projects before the Federal Emergency Management Agency updates its flood maps sometime in the next several years.

Council Bluffs Mayor Matt Walsh says the city is racing to get the levee system upgraded and certified before the flood maps are redrawn. Council Bluffs is working to improve its levees because of the massive 2011 flood where water levels along the Missouri River remained high for months.

All of the city’s levees must be certified by FEMA. If they aren’t, then homeowners will have to pay significantly higher flood insurance premiums.
