Atlantic Football eyes 2-0 start at Shenandoah

Sports

September 1st, 2016 by admin

The Atlantic Trojan Football team travels to Shenandoah Friday night to take on the Mustangs with an eye on a 2-0 start to the season. The welcomed new Head Coach Mike McDermott with a thrilling 16-14 home win in week one over Clarinda. The winning margin thanks to a field goal with under a minute to play in the game.Coach McDermott said it was nice to get that opening win and was proud of the way the Trojans played, especially their attention to the details.

The Shenandoah Mustangs suffered an overtime loss to AHSTW 13-6 in week one and their Head Coach Brian Diekmann said his team is hungry for a win.

Shenandoah beat the Trojans at home last year 55-19 behind star Quarterback Jake Johnson who racked up 181 rushing yards, 96 passing yards, and accounted for 3 touchdowns in the win.  Coach Diekmann knows Johnson was a big player to replace but likes what he has seen from Jordan Miller so far.

The Trojans will be looking to slow down the Shenandoah ground game and Coach McDermott knows their option attack presents a challenge for his defense.

Coach McDermott thinks the Trojan offense will improve as the season moves along but doesn’t need them to rack up big numbers if they play sound football.  He says the task this week will be getting in front of the Mustang linebackers.

Coach McDermott is excited to see how is team reacts to their first road trip of the year.

We’ll have coverage of the Trojans and the Mustangs Friday night here on KJAN.  Tune in to hear more from Coach McDermott on Trojan Preview at 4:45pm. Then catch our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00pm, followed by the Dvorak Tire and Service Pre-Game Show at 6:30pm, and Kickoff in Shenandoah is at 7:00pm. September 1st, 2016 by Ric Hanson

A northwest Iowa man is under arrest in Lincoln, Nebraska, charged with child enticement using an electronic communication device. Authorities say 63-year-old Dennis Ray Ragan of Moville responded to an online ad he thought was posted by a 15-year-old girl. The “girl” was really an undercover investigator in the Nebraska Attorney General’s office.

Last month Ragan exchanged 170 emails with the person he thought was a teenager, and on the final day of August he drove to Lincoln, Nebraska, to have sex with her. That’s when he was arrested.

First Whitney Bank and Trust has partnered with leading education technology company EverFi, Inc., to bring this interactive, web-based financial management program to over 200 students since the program’s inception in 2013.

“First Whitney Bank and Trust is very proud to have reached so many students with critical financial education. The 78 students reached through EverFi High School Financial Literacy course completed 340 individual modules of learning during the 2015-16 school year. Students’ knowledge of key financial topics rose by an average 22 percent based on pre- and post-assessment scores. Among the valuable topics covered were saving, banking, investing, renting versus owning, credit scores, taxes and insurance, and consumer fraud.

First Whitney Bank and Trust has partnered with EverFi, Inc. to bring the program to local students at no cost to the schools or the taxpayer.
