Suzuki gets 3 hits, up to 2,994 as Marlins beat Cardinals

Sports

July 17th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Ichiro Suzuki doubled, singled twice and had another hit taken away on a replay challenge, leaving him six shy of 3,000 in the Miami Marlins’ 6-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. The 42-year-old Suzuki made just his second start this month with All-Star Marcell Ozuna getting a day off. He’s been largely reduced to pinch hitting behind a set outfield, and singled in that role on Friday.

Suzuki also walked, scored a run and came up just short on his bid to beat out an infield hit. All of that in wilting, 93-degree heat for a player who’d been 3 for 11 in July. Giancarlo Stanton’s second double of the game drove in the go-ahead run in a two-run seventh against Jonathan Broxton (1-2). Christian Yelich had two hits and three RBIs as Miami took two of three for just its second series win the last seven years in St. Louis.

Kyle Barraclough (5-2) won in relief and A.J. Ramos earned his 29th save in 30 chances.

Iowa officials seek to help inmates with new certificate

News

July 17th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa correctional officials are revamping their process for issuing a little-known certificate aimed at helping inmates secure jobs when they leave prison. The Iowa Board of Parole and the Iowa Department of Corrections began a formal process this summer to propose new language in state code on how a certificate of employability is issued to an inmate who completes certain skills training in prison.

The certificate has been available for years, but a parole official told lawmakers recently that no certificate has ever been issued because no inmate has ever completed a required application form. The proposed changes would allow eligible inmates to automatically receive the certificate.

Experts and former inmates applaud the proposed change, which could go into effect this year. They’re also cautiously optimistic because there are several barriers to employment for former inmates.

WALFORD, Iowa (AP) — Firefighters rescued a 27-year-old man after a house collapsed after storms moved through eastern Iowa. The Linn County Sheriff’s office says the home in Walford, Iowa, was damaged around 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

Thunderstorm wind damage in southern Union County

News, Weather

July 17th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

A storm packing strong, straight-line winds has damaged property in rural, southern Union County. Emergency Management officials report tree limbs were down and an auger blown over on the Adams/Union County line. The damage occurred just before 8-a.m. about two-miles north/northwest of Kent.

Storms rolling through northern Iowa earlier this (Sunday) morning damaged or destroyed four machine sheds east of Thor, in Humboldt County. In Hardin County, trees 24-to- 36-inches in diameter were completely gone in Aldin, and a 40-foot tree fell. An additional tree fell on a house.

A shed and Morton building were destroyed near Gilbertville, in Black Hawk County. Downed trees were blocking Highway 17 in Wright County, and a large tree was blocking Highway 169 southwest of Livermore, in Humboldt County.

Elsewhere in northern Iowa, heavy rain fell near Clear Lake, and 6-to 8-inches of water covered the road near Estherville and Emmetsburg. Winds of up to 88-miles per hour downed trees and power lines in the Hardin County community of Steamboat Rock and Ackley. A car was submerged in flood waters when flash floods inundated parts of Mason City. Damage was also reported in Eagle Grove, Renwick, Burt, Lone Rock, and Jewell, all in northern Iowa.
