State Baseball Tournament Quarterfinal: Don Bosco drops Tri-Center 11-1

Sports

July 24th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The Don Bosco Dons got off to an early lead and never gave the lead back to defeat the Tri-Center Trojans 11-1, Saturday night at Principal Park to advance them to the semifinals of the Iowa High School Baseball Class 1A playoffs.  Don Bosco scored one run in the bottom half the first to get out to an early lead that started with Cade Schares getting hit by a pitch. Schares was brought Austin Miller’s single to shallow right.

Baylor Bedard got the start for Don Bosco and gave the Dons 5.1 strong innings of work where he allowed no runs from four hits and four walks, while striking out seven batters. The Dons opened it up in the bottom half of the second with five runs from three hits, two errors and two walks from starting pitcher Konnor Handy. Handy was chased after 2.1 innings of work where he allowed seven runs, five earned, from six hits and three walks, while striking out three.

Tri-Center was held scoreless until the top of the sixth when Handy ripped a single up the middle off Trever Brown that scored Kaleb Harrison who reached on a walk.  Don Bosco finished the game early in the bottom of the sixth by putting three runners across home plate to initiate the 10-run rule after five. Don Bosco will take on West Sioux Thursday at 1:30 in the second class 1A semifinal game.

Gonzalez homers, Turner has 2 RBIs; Dodgers beat Cards 7-2

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adrian Gonzalez hit his eighth home run, red-hot Justin Turner got two more RBIs and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat St. Louis 7-2 on Saturday night to end the Cardinals’ five-game winning streak. Turner’s two-run double capped a four-run third. He has 14 RBIs since the All-Star break.

Gonzalez’s 429-foot solo blast to center sparked a three-run sixth. Kenta Maeda (9-7) rebounded from a poor outing against Arizona on July 17, giving up two runs over 5 2/3 innings. Only one of the Cardinals’ first 15 batters was able to hit the ball out of the infield against the Japanese right-hander.

Maeda helped himself with an RBI bunt single to start the third-inning rally. Andrew Toles went 3 for 4 and scored once for the Dodgers. He has reached safely in nine of 10 games since being called up from the minors. Mike Leake (7-8) allowed seven runs — six earned — in six innings. He was victimized by a mental error on Maeda’s single when second baseman Greg Garcia failed to cover first on the bunt attempt.

Matt Adams homered for the second consecutive game. His blast to left in the fourth extended the Cardinals’ streak of home runs to 14 straight games. Aledmys Diaz reached safely for the 26th straight game with a first-inning single. Diaz’s streak is the second-longest by a Cardinals rookie since Albert Pujols had streaks of 30 and 48 games in 2001. The loss dropped St. Louis’ home record to 25-29.

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Mason City man sentenced to life in prison for killing a man during a home-invasion robbery when he was a teenager will now get a chance at parole. The Globe Gazette reports that District Court Judge James Drew signed an order Thursday amending Damion Seats’ sentence to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Seats’ original sentence was life in prison without the possibility of parole, but a 2012 U.S. Supreme Court ruling found that such sentences for juveniles are unconstitutional.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Some Waterloo residents are teaming up with a city council member in an effort to get security cameras installed around the city. Cedar Rapids television station KCRG reports that the group wants to model its plan on Dubuque’s, which installed cameras last year around the downtown area. Dubuque police say they were able to use video from the cameras last month to catch a gang leader linked to a number of crimes.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A state board has approved $405,000 in state tax incentives to help fund Cloverleaf Cold Storage’s planned $18 million warehouse expansion in Sioux City. The Sioux City Journal reports that the Iowa Economic Development Authority Board approved the incentives on Friday. Company officials say the addition will bolster warehouse space by 50 percent, or 140,000 square feet, allowing it to store more than 750 truckloads of refrigerated food products.

GRIMES, Iowa (AP) — Police in a suburban Des Moines city have identified a toddler found dead inside his home, alongside his unconscious mother. Police and medics responded to the Grimes home following a 911 call just after 10 a.m. Friday and say they found the body of 2-year-old Mason Wyckoff.
