Iowa’s Hayashida Advances to Quarterfinals at ITA Midwest Regionals

LAWRENCE, Kan. – University of Iowa sophomore Daianne Hayashida advanced to the quarterfinals on Saturday on the third day of ITA Midwest Regionals at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.  Hayashida notched her first win of the day against Anet Koskel of Arkansas, 6-0, 6-0, before following with a three-set win, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, over fifth-seeded Mae Canete of Missouri in the Round of 16.

Hayashida is the first Hawkeye to advance to the regional quarterfinals since current assistant coach Elise van Heuvelen in 2019.

Barbora Pokorna had her tournament run end, losing in straight sets to Oklahoma’s Ava Catanzarite, 6-4, 6-3

In doubles play, Hayashida and Jessica Matthews finished their tournament run falling to Oklahoma’s Guzman/Shcherbinia, 8-1.

Hayashida will play her quarterfinals match tomorrow starting at 1 p.m.

Cyclones to Face K-State in Final Big 12 Road Match

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State is set to face Kansas State in its final road game of the regular season on Sunday in the penultimate Big 12 action of the season. Sunday’s game is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. and the action will be streamed live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

ISU (5-10-1, 2-6 Big 12) enters the competition coming off its second conference win of the season over Kansas. Kansas State (3-10-3, 1-6-1 Big 12) has dropped six of its last seven and is one spot behind the Cyclones in the Bog 12 soccer points standings.

Iowa State has matched its highest win total under Coach Fannon as well as its highest Big 12 win total with two matches remaining on the year.

Woodbine Boys and AHSTW Girls win the Missouri Valley High School Cross Country Invitational

The AHSTW girl’s cross country team won the Missouri Valley High School Cross-Country Invitational by a score of 47 points. Adyson Lapel from Woodbine won first place. AHSTW had the eighth, ninth, and tenth-placed finishers in the invitational. Ava Paulsen was the eighth-place finisher Bella Lamp ninth, and Rylie Knop in tenth. Riverside finished in second, Woodbine finished in third, and Heartland Christian finished fourth.

Girls Team Results

4 – Heartland Christian: 70 points

The Woodbine boy’s cross country team won the Missouri Valley High School Cross-Country Invitational on Saturday with a total of 32 points. Woodbine had four top-ten runners in the meet. Landon Bendgen took the individual title with a time of 15:35.70, finishing over one minute faster than Gunner Wagner as he earned second place in the meet for Woodbine. Missouri Valley would come in at second place. Riverside finished in third place with the third, fourth, and fifth-place runners. Mason McCready finished with third, Brody Henderson fourth, and Dawson Henderson in fifth. Griswold finished in fourth and had the 17th-place finisher Holden Jensen and Brayden Lockwood at 22nd.

Incident at the Red Oak Airport Sunday morning: No injuries reported

(Red Oak, Iowa) – The Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency reports shortly before 10-a.m. today (Sunday), an aircraft traveling from Omaha, NE to St. Louis, MO experienced an in-flight emergency and was forced to make an emergency landing at the Red Oak Municipal Airport.
The aircraft landed on Runway 5, which was currently closed for runway maintenance and upgrades at the time of the incident. After touching down, the aircraft made contact with a portable barricade and the left wing made contact with a Bobcat skid loader that was parked off the runway causing significant damage to the aircraft’s wing. The aircraft was safely able to exit the closed runway to a nearby taxi way where it came to rest.

The aircraft involved is a Cirrus SR22T single engine plane, owned and operated by a subject from St. Louis, MO. No injuries were reported to the pilot or passenger of the aircraft. Damage to the contractor equipment on site is reported as minimal.

Red Oak Fire Department and Montgomery County EMA were assisted at the scene by Red Oak Municipal Airport staff.
The incident is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Weekend arrests in Creston

(Creston, Iowa) – Creston Police, this (Sunday) morning, report three arrests had taken place so far this weekend. At around 3:20 this (Sunday) morning, 26-year-old Kagiso Terence Lebelo, of Clearfield, was arrested near the Creston radio station on Highway 34. Lebelo was charged with OWI 1st Offense, and was taken to the Union County Jail where he was being held on a $1,000 cash or surety bond.

Saturday night, 35-year-old David Junior Richman, of Creston, was arrested at 301 W Adams. Richman was charged with Contempt-Violation of No Contact/Protective Order. He was being held without bond in the Union County Jail, until seen by a magistrate.

And, at around 1:45-a.m., Saturday, Creston Police arrested 35-year-old Kortney Lyn Beck, of Creston. She was taken into custody at her home on an Adams County warrant for Violation of a Court Order, for failure to comply with a sentencing order on an original charge of OWI. Beck was taken to the Adams County Jail where she must serve 2 days without bond.

Red Oak woman arrested Sunday morning for OWI

(Red Oak, Iowa) – Police in Red Oak arrested a woman early this (Sunday) morning. Officers arrested 32-year-old Randi Lynn Vanleuven, of Red Oak, for OWI/1st offense. She was taken into custody at around 2:18-a.m. in the 100 block of W. Park Avenue, in Red Oak. Vanleuven was transported to the Montgomery County Jail and held on a $1,000 bond.

Hit-and-run property damage accident in Creston

(Creston, Iowa) – A hit-and-run collision Friday afternoon in Creston caused an estimated $2,000 damage, but no one was injured. Police say a 2009 Chevy Impala was parked on the side of Maple Street in the 1200 block, when it was struck by a 2016 Dodge Journey SUV at around 2:45-p.m.

The driver of the SUV left the scene without notifying the owner or police. The collision caused the SUV to lose its front license plate on the back bumper of the Chevy. Officers were unable to locate the SUV. They requested an Adair County Sheriff’s Deputy try and make contact with the driver/owner of the offending vehicle, but as of the latest report, no contact had been made.

Injury accident in Creston Friday afternoon

(Creston, Iowa) – Officials with the Creston Police Department on Sunday (today) reported information with regard to an injury accident that took place Friday afternoon. Authorities say at around 1:50-p.m., a 2005 Cadillac Deville driven by 67-year-old Jarilyn Lue Schneider, of Creston, was traveling west on Highway 34 near the intersection of Abell Street, and was preparing to turn left onto Abell. Schneider thought she was clear to make the turn.

A Kia Forte passenger car driven by 19-year-old Sophie Grace Lyle, of Pella, was traveling east on Highway 34, when the Cadillac failed to yield, and pulled out in front of her. The KIA struck the Cadillac on the rear passenger side.

Lyle complained of pain and was transported by EMS ambulance to the Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston. Police say Schneider was checked out by medics and cleared at the scene. Damage from the collision amounted to $20,000. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. No citations were listed in the police report.
