The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded to a complaint of a minor beer party in Montgomery County on Sunday. At approximately 12:00am Sunday deputies checked out the complaint location at 1418 220th Street. 8 juveniles and 3 other individuals over 18 were charged with Minor in Possession of Alcohol.
Officers charged and released on citation 20-year-old Haley Lea Mae Woods of Afton, 18-year-old Mercedes Marie Nissen of Henderson, and 18-year-old Ryker Edward Connell of Red Oak.
The 8 juveniles were taken to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center and cited then released to custody of their parents.
The arrests were assisted by the Red Oak Police Department.
Strict new rules for storing a popular farm fertilizer are proposed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and Iowa’s top farm advocate says the rules are “wrong on several levels.” Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey says the rules needs to be thrown out and OSHA should go back to the drawing board. He says the proposed regulations stem from a fatal accident, but they really shouldn’t.
“The premise, coming about after the Texas fertilizer explosion, is completely unrelated to any concerns and it doesn’t really address any concerns around anhydrous ammonia itself,” Northey says. “It’s been a real reach for OSHA to be able to address anhydrous this way.” The blast at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas in April of 2013 leveled the small town, killed 15 people and destroyed dozens of homes. Investigators determined the explosion was caused by a fire that was intentionally set and was not caused by any breach in safety protocols.
Northey says implementation of the regulations will cause a host of problems. Northey says, “It’s just wrong on several levels and there’s certainly not enough time to be able to implement any changes, even though the changes really are not appropriate for what’s needed.” Northey says the cost of complying with the rules comes at a time when farmers and ranchers are already struggling financially and can’t really handle the extra burden.
“Every dollar matters on the farm,” Northey says. “Even with good crops in many areas of the corn belt, those dollars are not going to go far enough to pay for all the costs of putting that crop in the ground and to add extra costs, especially with no benefit to safety, just seems like the wrong thing to do.” Northey says the rules will hurt the smaller, independent retail fertilizer dealers the most.
The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture is asking OSHA to delay enforcement of its new requirements for storage of anhydrous ammonia until at least July of 2018.

CHICAGO (AP) — David Ross homered and teamed with Jon Lester for another scoreless performance, and the Chicago Cubs hurt St. Louis’ wild-card chances with 3-1 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday night. Ben Zobrist had three hits and scored two runs as Chicago finished with a major league-best 57-24 home record. It’s the most home wins for the Cubs since they went 58-19 at the West Side Grounds in 1910.
The Cardinals lost for the third time in four games, wasting a chance to improve their playoff positioning. They remain a half-game back of San Francisco for the second NL wild card.
Lester (19-4), one of the top candidates for the NL Cy Young Award, struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings. The left-hander allowed three hits and walked one while improving to 10-0 with 1.34 ERA in his last 13 starts. Carlos Martinez (15-9) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Nearby communities are donating several thousand filled sandbags to Cedar Rapids as the city prepares for flooding. Waterloo and Cedar Falls endured the crest of the Cedar River Saturday evening. So on Sunday those cities sent their extra sandbags about 55 miles downriver to Cedar Rapids. Forecasters say flooding is expected to begin in Cedar Rapids Sunday night and reach its height by Tuesday.
TRAER, Iowa (AP) — A single wind turbine was already turning in the breeze several miles away when MidAmerican Energy began work on the Vienna Project, the utility company’s 14th wind farm, in 2012. That one turbine near Traer may not get much attention compared to the Vienna Project’s 45 turbines _ one of the smaller wind farms MidAmerican owns. But that one turbine, on average, powers 40 percent of Traer Municipal Utilities’ energy usage. And it’ll likely be the only one the town of 1,700 ever requires.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Some of Iowa’s most powerful interest groups along with environmental organizations are backing efforts to clean up the state’s waterways, but there isn’t unity about how to take action on an issue that has frustrated lawmakers in the past. Two new coalitions have offered very different plans for tackling the problem, with one backing an increase in the sales tax and another supporting a moratorium on livestock confinement operation. Gov. Terry Branstad has rejected both of their proposals.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Music, food trucks, skateboarding and more could soon come to the Missouri River area. A new committee backed by the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce has formed to do the nitty-gritty work of implementing a bold vision for the riverfront area in Omaha and Council Bluffs. It’s working off a blueprint developed by a group of outside experts from the Urban Land Institute.
A police pursuit that began Sunday in Omaha ended in Council Bluffs with the driver of the suspect vehicle being taken into custody. Council Bluffs Police report Omaha Police attempted to stop a Nissan 370-Z that was driving recklessly. After Omaha Police helicopter ABLE 1 pursued the vehicle across I-80 into Council Bluffs at around 6:20-p.m., Sunday, officers from both Omaha and Council Bluffs converged on the vehicle behind Long John Silvers at 603 32nd Avenue, in Council Bluffs.
The driver fled on foot and was taken into custody without incident, at Hardee’s on South Expressway.
An investigation revealed that the driver of the Nissan was 25-year old Jack Orozco, of Omaha. Orozco was charged with Theft 5th degree for having stolen license plates, Eluding a Police Officer, and Reckless Driving for his actions in Council Bluffs. His passenger was released without charges.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs returned two turnovers for touchdowns, intercepted three passes in the end zone and forced eight turnovers total in a 24-3 victory over the hapless New York Jets on Sunday.
Marcus Peters had two of the picks for the Chiefs (2-1), including the first of four off the Jets’ Ryan Fitzpatrick in the fourth quarter. Daniel Sorenson had another, Derrick Johnson returned his 55 yards for a touchdown, and D.J. White snagged his in the end zone with 1:54 left in the game.
The eight turnovers were the most by the Jets (1-2) since they set a franchise record with 10 in a loss to the New England Patriots on Nov. 21, 1976.
Alex Smith was 25 of 33 for 237 yards and a touchdown for Kansas City, while Spencer Ware added 75 yards rushing. But it was the performance of the defense — and all those Jets turnovers — that helped the Chiefs bounced back from their first regular-season defeat in 12 games.
Eric Berry picked off a pass in the end zone late in the third quarter, and a fumbled kick return by the Jets’ Jalin Marshall was returned 27 yards by Demetrius Harris for another score.
Fitzpatrick was dismal a week after torching Buffalo, going 20 of 44 for 188 yards. His six picks were a career high, surpassing the five that he threw for St. Louis against Minnesota in 2005, and tied a franchise record.
