Got him! Suspect in 2 fatal Des Moines area Police Officer shootings is in custody

News

November 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

(Updated 9:43-a.m. A-P/Radio Iowa) – Police say the suspect in the killings of two Des Moines area police officers is in custody. Des Moines police Sgt. Paul Parizek says 46-year old Scott Michael Greene was taken into custody without incident at around 9-a.m. by the Iowa State Patrol Wednesday morning, in Dallas County.

Greene is suspected in the killing of a Des Moines police officer and an Urbandale police officer earlier Wednesday. The two officers were killed in ambush-style attacks while they were sitting in their patrol cars.

Iowa court records show Greene, of Urbandale, was jailed and charged with interference with official acts after resisting Urbandale police officers trying to pat him down for a weapon on April 10, 2014. A complaint signed by an Urbandale officer says Greene resisted verbal commands, was hostile and combative. It says he was known to be armed. He entered a guilty plea and was fined.

Two days later Urbandale police were called to answer a complaint of harassment at the apartment complex where Greene lived. The complaint says he threatened to kill another man during a confrontation in the parking lot. He was charged with harassment, pleaded guilty and received a suspended jail sentence and a year of probation. Records show he completed a court-ordered substance abuse and psychological evaluation.

A video posted on YouTube may provide some clues in the case of this morning’s fatal shootings of two Des Moines area police officers. The video posted by Scott Greene in mid-October details an incident at a high school football game. In the video, Greene says he was waving a Confederate flag at the game when he was “mugged” and the flag was taken away. Greene began recording the video outside the Urbandale High stadium after police officers escorted him out.

Greene is heard conversing with two police officers outside of the stadium.

In the ten-minute video, Greene later had this exchange with a female officer. Greene said he wanted to file an assault report.

Greene was given the flag but refused to leave the area and an officer is heard addressing him, by name. Officers threatened to charge Greene with trespassing if he wouldn’t leave but Greene maintained he wanted assault charges filed against someone in the crowd and insisted he wasn’t causing a disturbance.

The first of this morning’s two shootings took place at the very corner where the video was shot, outside the stadium.
