(Update) No decision on CCMH CEO today

The Cass County Memorial Hospital’s Board of Trustees met this (Friday) afternoon, but no decision was made on offering a contract of employment to a Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Instead, the Board held a closed session to hold a CEO Employment Contract Review and Negotiations. A decision on the hiring is expected during a special meeting next week.

30 people applied for the position left vacant by the termination on June 7th of Todd Hudspeth. Former CEO Pat Markham (whom Hudspeth had succeeded following her retirement) is serving as the interim top officer for the Cass County Health System until the new CEO is in place. The field of 30 applicants was narrowed down to six finalists who went through four sets of interviews with 25 people in four individual groups representing Board Members, the Administrative Team, medical providers and Health Department directors.

IKM-Manning host AHSTW in key Class 1A, District 7 contest

The IKM-Manning Wolves and AHSTW Vikings will collide in a key Class 1A, District 7 contest on Friday night in Manning.  The Wolves have come up just short in their last two contests against very tough opponents and now have their backs against the wall for a playoff push with a 2-3 record. AHSTW comes in undefeated at 5-0 after winning some tough early season games against Shenandoah and Lawton-Bronson,  then having a little easier time getting wins the last three weeks.

These two teams are very familiar with each other over the years and AHSTW Head Coach Davis Pattee sees much of the same that you would expect from this year’s IKM-Manning squad.

Junior Jared Johnson has taken over the Quarterback duties for the Wolves this year and has thrown for 523 yards and 4 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. The Wolves also have two backs that have rushed for over 300 yards and Coach Pattee has been impressed with their ball distribution and knows their success starts up front.

The Vikings Offense is led by a Junior Quarterback as well in RJ Harris who has played very well.  He’s thrown for 916 yards with 9 touchdowns and just 1 interception, he has also rushed for 6 scores on the season.  A key for the Wolves will be trying to slow him down.

Atlantic returns home to face tough Glenwood team

The Atlantic Trojans Football team returns home this week for another tough game in Class 3A, District 7 as they host the 4-1 Glenwood Rams.  The Trojans are trying to move on from last week’s 56-6 loss at Creston which dropped them to 1-4 on the season. The Trojans had a tough time slowing down a powerful Creston run game and Head Coach Mike McDermott knows they face another tough challenge this week against some option attack from Glenwood.

Glenwood brings a balanced offensive attack into the contest with Quarterback Kolten Wilwerding throwing for 673 yards this season with 9 touchdowns and 5 interceptions for the Rams.  Mavrick Decker is his favorite target with 18 catches for 344 yards and 5 touchdowns this season.  Coach McDermott said his team will have to be ready for a balanced attack from the Rams.

Kickoff at the Trojan Bowl between Atlantic and Glenwood is set for 7:30pm.

Des Moines authorities ID body found in minivan

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines authorities have released the name of a woman whose body was found in a parked minivan. Police identified the woman as 49-year-old Angela Eubanks, who lived in Waukee.

The body was reported about 8 a.m. Thursday in the vehicle parked at Broadlawns Hospital in northern Des Moines. The van apparently had been parked there for several days. Police considered the circumstances suspicious.

Police say an autopsy found no evidence of traumatic injury and that toxicology tests are being run. Their investigation is continuing.

Cass County Supervisors approve appointments to CC Food Policy Council

The Cass County Board of Supervisors met this (Friday) morning, in Atlantic. Cass County Auditor Dale Sunderman reports, having received two applications for membership on the Cass County Food Policy Council, motions were made and seconded to approve the appointments of Nancy Jensen and Jake Theis, both of Atlantic, as a members to the Cass County Food Policy Council. Their terms will expires Dec. 31st, 2020.

After County Engineer Charles Bechtold reviewed current road projects, the Board approved Federal-aid Agreements for bridge projects located along Lansing, Newport and Tucson Roads, the combined costs of which amount to a little more than $1.4-million.

The Board’s next meeting isn’t until Oct. 14th.

HELEN KNOTT, 98, of Manilla died Friday morning in Omaha. A Mass of Christian Burial for HELEN KNOTT will be held 11-a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4th, at the Sacred Heart Church in Manilla. Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Sacred Heart Church after 10-a.m., Tuesday.

HELEN KNOTT is survived by:

Her daughters – Shirley (Jack) Schaefer; Janet (Tina) Holquist; Carroll (Darrell) Oliver; Betty (Dick) Schaefer; Connie (Frank) Urzendowski; & Theresa Bueltel (& Glen Schaffer), of Carlsbad, CA.

Her sons – Larry (Sheila) Knott; Mike (Dianne) Knott; & Don (Joan) Knott, of Nixa, MO.

21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, other relatives, her sister-in-law (Judy Knott, of Harlan), and many friends.

4-H grows confidence, creativity, curiosity, courage, character and so much more by allowing youth to use the skills they learn to go out and make a positive difference in their communities.  Help Iowa 4-H celebrate the outstanding impact youth have made throughout the state during National 4-H Week October 2-8.

4-H is active in each of Iowa’s 100 county extension districts and empowers youth to reach their full potential through many different types of experiences including photography, music, woodworking, sewing, archery, livestock and horticulture. Youth have fun while gaining valuable skills in communication and the arts, citizenship and leadership, science, technology, engineering and math, as well as healthy living and personal life management by being involved in 4-H.

Iowa Ag Secretary urges Iowans to visit the state’s apple orchards and pumpkin patches this Fall

DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey today encouraged Iowans to get out and enjoy Iowa apples, pumpkins and other fall produce by visiting one of the many farms that sell directly to consumers or at the local farmers market.  Timely rains and a warm September have helped produce a plentiful apple and pumpkin crop in Iowa.

“Visiting a local apple orchard or pumpkin patch give you an opportunity to enjoy the freshest locally grown produce and also help support these hard working families and give them the chance to showcase their farm,” Northey said.  “We are hearing reports of very good apple and pumpkin crops across the state and now is the time to get out and enjoy fresh, Iowa-grown produce and make great family memories.”

There are more than 900 acres of apple trees in the state comprised of dozens of great varieties. Orchards are located throughout the state.  Visiting a local orchard is a great way to find new varieties that may not be available in a grocery store.  Ask to try a sample and be adventurous.

Pumpkin production has nearly tripled in the last 3 decades to well over 900 acres at last count.  In addition to family fun carving a jack-o-lantern, pumpkins are also an extremely versatile ingredient in cooking.  Pumpkins make great pies, casseroles and soups.  Pumpkin seeds and flowers can also be cooked and enjoyed.

Many farms also host fall festivals with great family activities such as hay rack rides, corn mazes, local music and other activities in addition to the opportunity to pick your own apples or pumpkins.
