ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jedd Gyorko hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning, Matt Holliday provided another big boost and the St. Louis Cardinals pushed the playoff race to the final day of the regular season, holding off the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 Saturday. The Cardinals began the day one game behind San Francisco for the second NL wild-card spot. The Giants later hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Justin Jackson ran for 171 yards and Austin Carr caught three touchdown passes as Northwestern held on to beat Iowa 38-31 on Saturday. Trae Williams’ interception in the final minute secured the win for the Wildcats (2-3, 1-1 Big Ten), who scored touchdowns on three straight drives in the second half for their first win at Kinnick Stadium since 2009. C.J. Beathard threw for 204 yards and a touchdown for Iowa (3-2, 1-1), which snapped its nine-game regular-season Big Ten winning streak.

Northwestern’s Clayton Thorson threw for 164 yards. Carr — his favorite target and the Big Ten’s receptions leader — has caught a touchdown pass in four straight games. Jackson became the fourth player in Northwestern history to reach 3,000 career yards. The junior’s 58-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter regained the lead for the Wildcats.

Defensive end Ifeadi Odenigbo had four of Northwestern’s six sacks. The Hawkeyes had two chances to tie the game in the final seven minutes, but were forced to punt and then Williams intercepted Beathard at Northwestern’s 36-yard line. Iowa’s LeShun Daniels Jr. and Akrum Wadley combined for 107 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Wadley has seven touchdowns in three games against Northwestern.

The Hawkeyes travel to Minnesota now, with hopes of holding onto the “Floyd of Rosedale” trophy. Iowa got whipped 52-14 in its last trip to Minnesota two years ago.

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Alex Jeske ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as Dayton used a strong running game to beat Drake 35-10 on Saturday for its first Pioneer Athletic League win of the season. Led by Tucker Yinger — with 172 yards on 21 carries — the Flyers (3-2, 1-1) outgained the Bulldogs 323-110 yards on the ground. Jeske opened the scoring with a 48-yard run and scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Chris Callahan hit a 19-yard field goal as time expired and No. 13 Baylor rallied from 14 down in the fourth quarter to beat Iowa State 45-42 on Saturday. Shock Linwood rushed for 237 yards for the Bears, who moved to 2-0 in the Big 12 for the fourth year in a row.

Baylor (5-0, 2-0), playing without star wide receiver KD Cannon because of a groin injury, trailed 42-28 before using scoring drives of 86 and 84 yards to tie it up. Baylor’s defense finally stiffened in the fourth quarter and Seth Russell — who was 12 of 22 passing for 178 yards — drove Baylor 83 yards to set up Callahan’s chip shot.

Joel Lanning threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns for Iowa State (1-4, 0-2). Mike Warren added a season-high 130 yards rushing for the Cyclones who travel next week to face Oklahoma State in the second game of a brutal stretch. Iowa State plays at Texas the following week and, after a bye, hosts Kansas State and Oklahoma.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs listed Jamaal Charles as questionable for Sunday night’s game at Pittsburgh, while fellow running back Charcandrick West has been ruled out with an ankle injury. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Friday that how well Charles comes out of the final practice of the week would dictate whether he makes his season debut. The four-time Pro Bowl selection has not played since Week 5 last season, when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The only other running backs on the active roster are Spencer Ware and Knile Davis. Kansas City could also be relying on a makeshift secondary against Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown & Co. Phillip Gaines is questionable with a knee injury and fellow cornerback Marcus Peters missed two practices this week with the flu, though he was a full participant in Friday’s workout.
