News

October 26th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines girl reported abducted on Wednesday afternoon, has been located safely in Indiana, with her mother. The Des Moines Police Department shared that update at 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, hours after an AMBER Alert was issued for 14-year-old Nina Williams. That alert has since been canceled.

Des Moines police say Nina Williams was last seen in the 6100 block of Creston Avenue around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday before her disappearance. Nina is autistic and nonverbal and has special care needs. Police say evidence indicates that Nina was abducted by her noncustodial parent, 36-year-old Jessica Rae Williams.

The two were found in Hammond, Indiana, which is more than five hours east of Des Moines, just outside Chicago. Des Moines police say the incident remains under investigation, and that more information will be released.

Siouxland Food Bank receives chocolate milk

News

October 26th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The Food Bank of Siouxland now has the second half of a large donation of milk from Kemp’s Dairy and Hy-Vee. Food bank executive director, Jacob Wanderscheid, says the shelf stable milk in is chocolate. “Kids just generally respond a lot better to chocolate milk, so this will go even faster than that white milk that we got in the summer,” he says. “It comes at a great time as we build supplies up for the holiday giving.”

The food bank and the two businesses have teamed up for the annual great American milk drive the past two years. Wanderscheid says the 49-thousand units of milk come as they enter their busiest time. “The biggest season for us is that November, December, January period as economic things slow down farming, construction roadwork slows down, people are taking that break for winter. Times get tough during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season,” he says.

Milk has a short shelf life and that makes it a high demand item for the agencies the food bank serves. The Dairy Farmers of America developed the shelf stable milk. Jay Johnson is Kemp’s sales director in Le Mars where the shelf stable milk was first used. “It came as a part of a need study to determine how we could be most impactful to helping nutritionally starved kids and families throughout the country,” Johnson says. “And the number one problem was a milk product that didn’t require refrigeration. Through that D-F-A has decided to develop shelf stable, individually packed milk. It’s easier to carry. You can put it in backpacks, you can send it to school.”

The Food Bank of Siouxland will split the milk between the backpack program for two-thousand school kids, and the food they send to their agencies. They serve several northwest Iowa counties.

Grassley: New legislation targets organized retail crime and ‘flash mob’ robberies

News

October 26th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowans may have seen security camera footage on the T-V news where coordinated “flash mobs” of perhaps a dozen people or more swarm a store, steal armloads of pricey products, then bolt for the exits — all within a matter of seconds. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says we’re seeing a dramatic rise in this brand of organized retail crime and he’s introducing legislation today (Thursday) to target this type of theft ring. “It’s highly organized by underworld people,” Grassley says. “They get sometimes young people, sometimes older people, to go into these big boxes and get the most expensive items they can, and then it’s fenced.”

A federal report says organized retail crime costs retailers some 720-thousand dollars for every billion dollars in sales — a rise of 50-percent since 2015. While the thefts themselves can take a serious bite out of an individual store’s bottom line, Grassley says the large sums of money being generated when the stolen goods are fenced are often going overseas. “When this money comes in, a lot of times it’s laundered back to China,” Grassley says, “and then in China, it pays for fentanyl that comes to Mexico and involves the cartels.”

Grassley is co-sponsoring the bipartisan, bicameral Combating Organized Retail Crime Act, which would create an Organized Retail Crime Coordination Center to ensure resources and information-sharing will be available across state, federal and private-sector partners. He says the legislation would also set up a coordinated, multi-agency hub and new tools to better target the networks and trends driving organized retail crime.

Reynolds ‘wholeheartedly’ backs investigation of alleged gambling among UI, ISU athletes

News, Sports

October 26th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Governor Kim Reynolds is suggesting it was a tip that led state agents to investigate whether there was illegal gambling among male athletes at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University.

The state’s investigation of sports wagering led to misdemeanor charges against several athletes at Iowa and Iowa State and the N-C-A-A sanctions that followed have sidelined players. During a news conference in Des Moines yesterday (Wednesday), Reynolds said no one in state government checked in with her about the investigation.

On August 15th of 2019, it became legal in Iowa to place bets on sporting events, although people originally had to go to one of the 19 state-licensed casinos to register. Since 2021, registration can be done online — but you still must be at least 21 to place sports bets. Reynolds says the gambling by Iowa and Iowa State athletes that’s been revealed is a wake up call.

Under current N-C-A-A rules, college athletes of any age cannot bet on any sport in which the N-C-A-A hosts a championship.

Riverside falls short in Class 1A Regional Championship

Sports

October 25th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The Riverside Bulldogs lost to the Ankeny Christian Eagles in three straight sets in the Class 1A Region 4 Championship on Wednesday night. It was a tightly contested match in which Riverside could never grab on to a lead.

In the first set the Eagles took an early lead and continued to pound away at the Bulldog back row collecting kill after kill. In the first set Ankeny Christian totaled 10 kills. Riverside responded back with five kills of their own in the opening set with the help of Sophia Taylor who had 5 kills, 1 ace, 1 dig and Elyssa Amdor with 7 kills, 4 digs, 1 block. Those two helped Riverside create a 6-point run that turned a 19-12 match, into 19-18. Yet, the Eagles stayed composed and outlasted the Bulldogs to take the first set 25-19.

The second set saw more tenacity from each school exchanging points throughout. Ankeny Christian continued to unload kills having 10 in the second set with 4 blocks to stay ahead of a gritty Riverside team. Still set numbers two would end in similar fashion to number one and the Eagles nabbed it 25-18.

In the third set the Eagles had all the momentum with 11 kills, 6 aces, and 5 blocks. They seemed even sharper before and Riverside struggled to keep up. Ankeny Christian won 25-12. It was a tough loss for Riverside Head Coach Brooke Flathers and her team. Tears were shed, but Coach Flathers noted the strength she saw from her players and how well they fought.

With the Regional Championship loss, comes the end of a few seniors playing careers at Riverside and Coach Flathers was grateful for the time they spent with the Bulldogs.

Riverside had a lot of youth on this year’s team and bring back quite an underclassman for next year. Coach Flathers knows that next year’s group is a hard working one.

Ankeny Christian starts the first round of 1A State play October 31st against Newell-Fonda.
