Thursday’s High in Atlantic was 75. Our Low this morning was 36.  Last year on this date, our High in Atlantic was 68 and the low was 57. The Record High in Atlantic on this date was 75 in 1909 and 1978. The Record Low was -1 in 1991.

1 dead in early morning crash on I-80 in Cass County

(Update 7:25-a.m.: Right lane open westbound on I-80 but traffic is heavy and slow)

One person has been confirmed deceased as the result of a fiery accident involving two semi tractor-trailers this morning, on Interstate 80 eastbound in Cass County. A second person was transported by Medivac Ambulance to the Cass County Memorial Hospital, in Atlantic. No names have been released. The Atlantic Fire Department was called the scene of the crash just east of the Highway 71 exit near the Nishna River Bridge, at around 5:30-a.m.

The road was completely blocked at the Nishna River bridge and traffic is being re-routed. Eastbound traffic is being directed south at Highway 71 to Highway 83 and then east to Anita. Westbound traffic was down to the right lane only as of 7:25-a.m. but traffic is extremely backed-up.

Initial reports from authorities at the scene indicated one of the semi’s was either partially in the ditch or on the shoulder when it was struck by the second semi. One driver got out, the other driver was still inside his cab.

“Active Intruder” drill set for today in Atlantic

A reminder for Atlantic residents: Atlantic Police in coordination with the Atlantic Fire Department, Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Cass County Emergency Management Agency, Atlantic Medivac, and the Iowa State Patrol, will be conducting an “Active Intruderdrill today at the Atlantic High School. Officials stress that “There are currently no known threats of violence to any schools or facilities within the area. This is strictly A DRILL.

The drill will begin shortly after 10-a.m., and will include and “ALERT” from the principal’s office, notifying everyone in the building of the “Danger Zone.” Those area affected in the “Danger Zone,” will be practicing “Lockdown/Barricade,” and discussing alternate exits from the classroom.

The principal will continue to “Inform” everyone of any changes to the “Danger Zone.” “Counter,” which was taught in previous lessons, will not be practiced in the first drill. Classrooms not in the “Danger Zone,” will practice the preferred response, “Evacuation.”

To ensure participant safety, certain intersections and roads surrounding the Atlantic High School, specifically the area of E. 14th Street, will be temporarily blocked-off and inaccessible. The closures include: Eastbound traffic on 14th Street from Olive Street; 14th and Roosevelt Streets; 14th and Lincoln Streets; 14th and Mulberry; 14th and Cherry; 14th and Plum, and westbound traffic on 14th Street from Redwood Drive.

IRMA GUIKEMA, 90, of Greenfield, died Friday, November 4th, at the Greenfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Greenfield. Funeral services for IRMA GUIKEMA will be held 10:30-a.m. Monday, Nov. 7th, at the Greenfield Gospel Chapel. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1-until 7-pm Sunday, Nov. 6th, with the family present from 5-until 7-p.m. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Memorials:  May be directed to the Irma Guikema Memorial Fund to be established by the family.

Burial will be in the Greenfield Cemetery, with a luncheon to follow at the Greenfield Gospel Chapel.

IRMA GUIKEMA is survived by:

Her son – Bob (Jean) Guikema, of Greenfield.

Her daughters – Ruth (Jerry) Holan, of Fontanelle, and Barbard (A.J.) Bobb, of Des Moines.

Her sister – Jean (Jerry) Reed, of Greenfield.

10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, other relatives & friends.

Atlantic Fire called to semi on fire on I-80

The Atlantic Fire Department was called the scene of a fiery accident on Interstate 80 eastbound this morning, just east of the Highway 71 exit near the Nishna River Bridge. No. 2 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley and No. 6 Kuemper meet in 2A

Second ranked Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley plays number six Carroll Kuemper tonight (Friday), in the quarterfinal round of the class 2A playoffs in Denison. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley coach Cory Brandt says the Nighthawks face a tough challenge.

Brandt says the Nighthawks must limit their mistakes.

Kuemper coach Chad Klein says it wil take a big effort by the Knight’s defense.

Klein says ball control will be very important for the Kuemper offense.

Cardinals, Matheny agree to 3-year contract extension

ST. LOUIS (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, whose team missed the playoffs in 2016 for the first time in his five-year tenure, has agreed to a three-year contract extension. The Cardinals announced the new contract Thursday, a day after the rival Chicago Cubs won the World Series. Terms were not disclosed.

Matheny is 46. The Cardinals have averaged 92 wins per season since he took over after Tony La Russa retired following the World Series-winning 2011 season. Overall, Matheny is 461-349.

The former Gold Glove catcher led the Cardinals to playoff appearances in 2012 through 2015 before falling one game short this season, including NL Central titles in 2013-2015. He also led St. Louis to the 2013 World Series, losing in six games to Boston.

Red Oak man arrested for drug paraphernalia

A Red Oak man was arrested Thursday night, on a valid Montgomery County warrant for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. 34-year old Jesse Donald Trost was taken into custody in the 400 block of N. Highland Avenue, at around 7:30-p.m. He was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $300 cash bond.
