Atlantic Personnel and Finance Committee approves hiring of City Clerk

News

November 7th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The City of Atlantic’s Personnel and Finance Committee has selected a person to succeed current City Clerk Deb Wheatley Field when she retires early next year. The Committee interviewed three candidates last Thursday evening. The candidates included Ali Tupper, Barb Barrick, and current Deputy City Clerk Deidre Derby.

City Administrator John Lund says after interviewing the three candidates, their selection was contacted. The offer was made to Barb Barrick, and she accepted.

Barrick currently works as a Community Development Specialist at SWIPCO, in Atlantic. She’s previously served as the City Clerk/Finance Director for the City of Fort Dodge, and Financial Manager for the City of Marengo. Barrick is a graduate of Upper Iowa University, with a double major in Business Administration and Public Administration.

The City Council must still approve the Personnel and Finance Committee’s recommendation. Assuming they do, she would replace Deb Wheatley Field after her last day on February 24th.

Wheatley Field announced in Sept. she would be retiring as the City Clerk in Atlantic, after more than 35-years on the job.

Nominate the Christmas Angel you know to the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce by November 29th at noon. This year’s angel will be announced at the Holiday Concert, sponsored by Bonnesen’s Five & Ten Store, on December 4th at 3pm. (Updated) Taylor County man killed during I-80 rollover accident in Cass County Sunday morning

News

November 7th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

In an update to our earlier reports, the Iowa State Patrol says a young man from Taylor County died Sunday morning during a crash on Interstate 80 east of Marne, in Cass County. 19-year old Devon Wheeler, of Gravity, died at the scene of the crash that happened at around 7:15-a.m., about a half-mile east of the Marne exit. The driver of the car, 19-year old Benjamin Hill, of Bedford, was flown from the scene by Midwest MedAir to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Both men were ejected from the vehicle. Neither man was wearing a seat belt.

Officials say Hill was driving a 2007 Ford Focus eastbound on I-80 when the car drifted onto the north shoulder. Hill overcorrected, causing the car to cross both lanes of I-80 and enter a ditch before rolling over and coming to rest in a harvested corn field.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Atlantic, and Marne Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene.
