First Whitney Bank & Trust Announces 12 Days of Christmas

First Whitney Bank in partnership with the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce will be giving 14 lucky shoppers a total of $600 between now and Christmas. The Twelve Days of Christmas Drawings will run December 13th – December 23rd. There will be 12 winners taking home $25 AtlantiCash, one runner up winning $100 AtlantiCash and a Grand Prize of $200 AtlantiCash.

These seventeen businesses have offered prizes and discount on over 6,400 scratch off tickets that have been distributed over the past four weeks to people shopping local.

CAM travels to Essex for Doubleheader tonight on KJAN

The CAM Cougars travel to Essex for a Varsity Basketball Doubleheader that we’ll have for you tonight on KJAN. The Girls game will get started first at 6:00pm with the Boys to follow around 7:30pm.

In the Girls game the CAM Cougars bring a 4-1 record into the contest against an Essex Trojanettes team that is 3-1. CAM has been lead by a strong group of Sophomores this year led by Madison Gettler who is averaging 15.3 points per game.  Paige McAfee is right behind Gettler dropping in 12.8 points per game so far this season.  Essex is lead by Daiton Martin and Jescenia Mosley who have teamed up to drop in about 31 points per game.

In the Boys contest CAM comes in with a 1-3 record after a close loss to Paton-Churdan on Friday. The Cougars are led by point guard Thomas Hensley who is averaging about 19 points per game. Nic Holste has dropped in 16 points per game for the Cougars as well. Essex  is 1-4 after a Friday loss to Sidney. They have been led in scoring by Seniors Jaymn Vandusen and Gunnar Glasgo.

AP College Football All-America Team announced

No. 1 Alabama placed four players on The Associated Press All-America team, most of any school, and Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson and fellow Heisman Trophy finalists Jabrill Peppers of Michigan and Dede Westbrook of Oklahoma were also first-team selections.

The Crimson Tide and No. 2 Ohio State tied for the most players on the three All-America teams released Monday with six. No. 3 Clemson had five players on the three teams, but none on the first team. Washington, which has a spot in the College Football Playoff team along with Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson, had two players on the second team.

Jackson won the Heisman Saturday , finishing well ahead of Clemson’s Deshaun Watson and Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield. The three quarterbacks lined up similarly on the All-America teams with Watson second-team and Mayfield third-team.

Cass County Extension Reminds Commercial Pesticide Applicators to Call ASAP for Continuing Education Courses

The Cass County Extension office is reminding commercial pesticide applicators that this week is the deadline to call to make sure they can view their required continuing instructional courses (C-CICs) by the end of the year. Cass County Extension is once again hosting these required trainings for local commercial pesticide applicators, but wants to remind anyone who has yet to attend the training that all CIC training must be completed by the end of December. To avoid conflicts with year-end scheduling, Cass County Extension is requiring that all training dates be on the schedule by Thursday, December 15th in order to be honored.

“We know year end is a busy time for all, but we don’t want anyone to miss the opportunity to attend their annual required training, as time to meet those annual requirements is getting short.” shared Kate Olson, Extension Program Coordinator in Cass County. “We do offer trainings on a first-come, first-served basis, and our hours will be slightly different during the holidays, so we’d like to remind folks to call and get their classes scheduled before our year-end calendar fills up!”

According to Olson, reshow dates can occur after December 15th, but they must be on the calendar before then to be honored. To ensure a spot on the training schedule, applicators needing to complete CIC for the year are asked to call prior to December 15th. Applicators calling after this date will NOT be placed on the training schedule. Training dates can be scheduled locally by calling the Cass County Extension office at 712-243-1132 or emailing lander@iastate.edu. For more information on the Commercial Pesticide Applicator program or the CIC classes, please visit www.extension.iastate.edu/psep/ComAp.html. If you plan to attend the training in a different county Extension Office, please call ahead, and do so as soon as possible, because many other counties in the area have similar cut-off dates, but these will vary by office.

Audubon CSD staff welcome students back & help them deal w/the loss of classmates

Students and staff with the Audubon Community School District today (Monday), have the chance to meet with counselors and members of the local ministerial organization, to grieve over two students whose lives were tragically cut short in a crash, Saturday. Audubon Superintendent Brett Gibbs told KJAN News the day started out a bit somber, as expected, but they’re trying to get back to a normal routine while still allowing the healing and grieving process to continue. (click on the sound bar to hear his comments)

Jamison Steckler, an 8th grader and his brother Gavin Steckler, a 5th grader died as the result of a car accident [Saturday] on Interstate 80. Gibbs said because the accident happened Saturday, many of the district’s 500 or so students had a chance to attend church and seek solace in their church families as well as each other.

Gibbs said their Crisis Management Team at the school has been in-place for about the past four or five years. They received extensive training from Cheri Love, a nationally recognized leader in crisis intervention and grief counseling.

The staff filled the hallways greeting the kids this morning, and spent the first period of classes talking with students about grieving and that it’s okay to do so. The only changes to the schedule as a result of the tragedy, was that the Vocal Music Performance scheduled for tonight has been postponed to a later date.

Audubon State Bank has a fund set up to help the Steckler family deal with the loss and expense.

LYLE McCLELLAN, 71, of rural Bayard died Monday, December 12th.  Funeral services for LYLE McCLELLAN will be held 11-a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17th, at the Methodist Church in Guthrie Center. Ohde Funeral Home in Bayard has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday (12/16), from 3-until 6-p.m. Visitation will resume 10-a.m. Saturday, at the Methodist Church in Guthrie Center (prior to the service).

Burial will be in the Orange Township Cemetery, near Coon Rapids.

Griswold man arrested in Audubon County; Cherokee man arrested on drug charges in Audubon County

The Audubon County Sheriff’s Office reports a northwest Iowa man was arrested Friday afternoon on drug charges, following a traffic stop on Lark Avenue, near 200th Street. 19-year old Mason McClean Meitzenheimer, of Cherokee, was brought to the Audubon County Jail and charged with Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Interference with Official Acts. He was later released after appearing before a magistrate. The Audubon County K-9 “Axel” and Audubon Police assisted in making the arrest.

And, 25-year old Devin Allen Foote, of Griswold, was arrested Friday night in Audubon, on an outstanding warrant. Foote was charged with two counts of Violation of a Protective Order, as the result of an incident that occurred with an Exira resident. He was brought to the Audubon County Jail and later released after appearing before a magistrate.

Bread mix recall in Iowa due to salmonella worries

Concerns over salmonella have prompted a recall on a bread mix in 40 states, including Iowa. Brand Castle’s Monkey Bread mix has been pulled because of contamination issues at the plant that supplies the mix’s buttermilk powder. There have been no illnesses reported. The monkey bread is sold in 16 ounce packages with a best buy day of June 29th, 2018 and can be returned to the point of purchase.
