Apple Dew Dumplings (12-27-2016)

Mom's Tips

December 27th, 2016 by Jim Field

  • 2 apples (Granny Smith or Jonagold work well)
  • 2 cans refrigerated crescent rolls
  • Cinnamon to taste
  • 2 sticks of butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 (12 oz) can or bottle of Mountain Dew, Sprite or 7-up.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Spray bottom of 9″ x 13″ pan with cooking spray.  Core and peel apples.  Slice into 8 pieces.  Unroll crescent rolls on wax paper, sprinkle with cinnamon and separate by scoring at the perforations of the rolls with a knife.  Place one apple slice on top of each triangle; roll up and place seam-side down in pan.  There will be 6 on each side of the pan and 4 placed between the 2 rows down the middle of the pan.  Sprinkle lightly with more cinnamon.

In medium sauce pan, melt butter over low heat.  Stir in sugar.  Mix well; add vanilla and salt.  You may add a bit of cinnamon to this mixture if you wish.  Stir well.  Pour/spoon over cinnamon-topped rolls.  Pour soft Mountain Dew over all.  Sprinkle more cinnamon or cinnamon/sugar mixture to your taste on top of this.

Bake for 30 minutes.  Let sit 45 to 60 minutes to absorb liquid after removing from oven.  You may warm up before serving, if desired.  Makes 16 servings.

Recipe may be halved, but use smaller baking dish.

Central IA crash Tuesday claims the life of an IL man

News

December 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

A crash early this (Tuesday) morning in Central Iowa’s Jasper County has resulted in the death of an Illinois man. The Iowa State Patrol says 64-year old Michael Burdell, of West Chester, IL., died in the crash that also resulted in injuries to 21-year old Austin McFadden, of Mingo.

Authorities say a 2007 Dodge Caravan driven by Burdell was traveling west on Interstate 80 at around 2-a.m., when the vehicle crossed onto the shoulder and hit the rear of a 2014 Chevy Silverado driven by McFadden. The Chevy then hit the rear of a tractor trailer driven by 53-year old James Kunsman, of Downers Grove, IL.

Following the impact with the SUV, Burdell’s van crossed over both lanes of travel and spun around before hitting a cable barrier and coming to rest eastbound in the westbound lane of I-80. Burdell later died from his injuries. McFadden, who was not wearing a seat belt, was treated at the scene and released.

Top Iowa cattleman looks to 2017 with mixed emotions

Ag/Outdoor

December 27th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The new president of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association has guarded optimism for 2017 as the new year approaches. Mike Cline, who raises cattle near the northeast Iowa town of Elgin, says he’s hoping to build on the success of the just-passed 50-cent-per-head state beef checkoff. Cline says the funds will help producers weather the tough economic times.

“We can really target things that will help our high-quality beef, demand for that product and marketing outlets and research that could help us here, whether it’s using byproducts or new technology to track animals or whatever,” Cline says. “It should give us a leg up and a little bit more control of where we’re going.”

Cline says the association’s leaders are also trying to help their members deal with the recent market volatility. “This past year was tough on producers, the market jumping around as it was, so they’re trying to get more answers on that,” Cline says. “That’s why we’re looking at price discovery and encouraging people to do more cash sales versus negotiated sales in advance so we can keep our market real current.”

One priority is to work with lawmakers and the new president to increase trade opportunities for the cattle industry. Cline says the recent appointment of Governor Terry Branstad as the U-S Ambassador to China should help. “That’s a great win, not only for Iowa but for all of us here that are moving product over to China,” Cline says. “Whenever you look at China you have to look at the potential there and it’s enormous. We always know, too, that it’s a tough sell to work with China and getting things worked out while we have trade moving back and forth quite frequently.”

Cline says the members also want to see regulatory relief at the national level and are encouraged by what they’re hearing from President-elect Trump so far.
