VERNA FETT, 87, of Adair, died Saturday, Jan. 21st, at the New Homestead, in Guthrie Center. Funeral services for VERNA FETT will be held 11-a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26th, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, in Casey. Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Adair has the arrangements.

Visitation with the family is from 9:30-until 11-a.m. Thursday, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Casey.

Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery at Adair.

Memorials may be directed to the New Homestead or the LWMC of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

VERNA FETT is survived by:

Her children – Darlene Fett, of Vermillion, SD; Ervin (Shari) Fett, of Ankeny; Karen (Gordon) Shinn, of Hamilton (IA), and Sandra Mickle, of Adair.

Her brother – Kenneth (Betty) Schmeling, of Casey.

6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

RAGBRAI 2017 to take a northern Iowa trek

The Des Moines Register, Saturday, announced the route for this year’s RAGBRAI trek. The Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) will start July 23rd in Orange City and end July 29th in Lansing. Overnight towns during the ride include Spencer, Algona, Clear Lake, Charles City, Cresco, Waukon and Lansing. The full route for RAGBRAI 45 will be announced sometime in March.
The annual even attracts thousands from riders from across the world and country to roll through the countryside of the Hawkeye State. Last summer, RAGBRAI took a southern route through the Hawkeye state.  It rolled from Glenwood to Washington over it’s seven day ride.

Total mileage for RAGRAI 45 amounts to  411.4, the third-shortest of RAGBRAI’s 45 journeys. It’ll also be the third-flattest of the trips, with a total feet of climb amounting to 13,078 feet. This year’s route is rated the third-easiest RAGBRAI by combination of distance and climb. The ride started in Sioux City back in 2015 with riders dipping their tires in the Missouri River. Illinois State beats Drake to stay unbeaten in MVC, 72-58

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — Deontae Hawkins scored 19 points and Illinois State pulled away in the second half to beat Drake, 72-58 Saturday to keep its Missouri Valley Conference unblemished. Graham Woodward hit a 3-pointer with one second left in the first half to get Drake within four at intermission, 30-26. But the Bulldogs got no closer in the second half after Billy Wampler’s 3-pointer made it 46-42 with just over 10 minutes left.

Phil Fayne’s layup with 8:04 remaining gave the Redbirds a 10-point lead and DJ Clayton’s tip-in off an offensive rebound pushed the lead to 14. Clayton finished with 15 points off the bench for Illinois State (16-4, 8-0). MiKyle McIntosh added 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Drake was held to just 30.5 shooting from the field (18 of 59), including 10 of 32 from long range. Reed Timmer and Woodward each had 13 points to lead the Bulldogs.

Iowa State women top No. 22 Kansas State 75-69

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Jadda Buckley scored 21 points, Seanna Johnson totaled 13 points, eight rebounds and a career-high nine assists and Iowa State got its first victory against a ranked team in over a year with a 75-69 win over Number 22 Kansas State Saturday. Iowa State led 48-44 heading into the fourth quarter and stayed in front until a pair of free throws from Karyla Middlebook gave the Wildcats a 58-57 lead with 5:19 remaining.

Bridget Carleton put the Cyclones up for good with her fourth 3-pointer, as Buckley and Johnson coupled to make all eight free-throw attempts in the final 30 seconds to seal it. Buckley and Carleton combined to make 7 of 11 3-pointers for Iowa State (11-8, 2-6 Big 12). The Cyclones made 8 of 12 from the field and 9 of 9 free throws in the fourth quarter and shot 51 percent from the field (26 of 51) overall.

Kaylee Page and Breanna Lewis each had 14 points for Kansas State (15-5, 5-3). Iowa State last defeated a ranked team on Dec. 11, 2015, with a 69-66 win over Iowa.

IA Hawkeye women defeat MN 80-65, Saturday

The University of Iowa women’s basketball team trailed Minnesota by seven points in the first half and 36-35 at halftime before going on a tear resulting in an 80-65 victory Saturday in front of 7,191 on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes enjoyed a 45-29 run in the second half and grabbed the lead for good when sophomore Megan Gustafson converted a conventional three-point play that put Iowa ahead, 43-41, early in the third quarter. Gustafson scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the third quarter and registered her 10th double-double of the season before the period ended.

Gustafson made 8-of-13 field goals and all three free throws to pace four Hawkeyes in double figures. Senior Ally Disterhoft scored 17 points, freshman Kathleen Doyle had 11 (10 in the first half), and sophomore Tania Davis added 10. Disterhoft entered the game shooting 15.6-percent from distance in Big Ten games, but she made three of Iowa’s eight 3-point field goals Saturday.

The Hawkeyes committed a season-low 11 turnovers.  Iowa returns to action Sunday, Jan. 29th, against No. 3 Maryland (18-1, 6-0).

Ashton’s free throws help N Iowa top S Illinois 58-57

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Jordan Ashton scored 14 points, including a pair of free throw with 15 seconds left, and Northern Iowa overcame a 12-point second-half deficit to beat Southern Illinois 58-57 on Saturday night.

Ashton scored 10 of his 14 in the second half for Northern Iowa (8-11, 3-5 Missouri Valley) and was perfect from the field (3 of 3), the arc (2 of 2) and the free-throw line (2 of 2) in the final 20 minutes.

Trailing 54-42 with 8:23 remaining, the Panthers outscored Southern Illinois 12-1 over the next seven minutes to close it to 55-54. A dunk by Thik Bol with 1:21 left to play put the Salukis in front by three, 57-54, but a layup from Klint Carlson and Ashton’s free throws gave Northern Iowa a 58-57 lead with 15 seconds left.

Northern Iowa led 27-26 at halftime, but the Salukis used an 11-2 run to take a 36-29 lead with 16:50 remaining and eventually pushed the lead to lead to 12. Armon Fletcher had 16 points and six rebounds for Southern Illinois (11-10, 4-4).

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Thousands of people marched and cheered speakers in Des Moines in an event connected to similar gatherings in Washington and cities around the country. People gathered Saturday morning for the Women’s March at the state Capitol. The event was part of the national Women’s March, but speakers and protesters holding signs drew attention to a variety of issues, including rights for disabled people, Native Americans and gay, lesbian and transgender residents.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Vandals have damaged or destroyed about three dozen fruit and nut trees and plants at an eastern Iowa community orchard. The Quad-City Times reports that the vandalism at the Quad-Cities Food Forest in Davenport included breaking off about 30 trees at the base and pouring tar over other plants. Two years ago, volunteers planted 100 small plants that will bear edible fruits, including gooseberry and elderberry bushes and hazelnut and English walnut trees.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines man accused of killing two Des Moines residents who were living with him has canceled a plea hearing and will instead take his case to trial. The Des Moines Register reports that Michael John Wanchanic had been set to enter a plea on Friday.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Police say a Council Bluffs mother has been charged after leaving her 12-year-old son on a roadside when he threw a tantrum. The Daily Nonpareil reports that the 33-year-old woman is set to be arraigned Feb. 20 on child endangerment and abandonment charges. An officer found the boy walking along an Interstate 80 ramp at 6:30 a.m. in the morning last fall. The boy said his mother left him after an argument about which shoes to wear to his school in Omaha, Nebraska.
