DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republican lawmakers have proposed legislation that would add about $40 million to Iowa’s K-12 education spending, an amount that Democrats say is inadequate. The GOP plan proposes increasing the amount spent per student in Iowa by about 1.1 percent for the budget year that goes into effect in July. The state uses roughly $3 billion from its general fund on K-12 education.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State University has agreed to rescind the 2015 firing of its student counseling director, who alleged he was let go after warning about potentially dangerous shortages in mental health services. An agreement signed by President Steven Leath settles allegations of retaliation, defamation and age discrimination that Terry Mason had made. The deal avoids a lawsuit by changing Mason’s dismissal to a retirement, which makes him eligible for health benefits and a payout for sick leave.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republican lawmakers are expected to approve legislation to patch a shortfall in the state’s $7.2 billion budget. The GOP-controlled House is scheduled Monday evening to vote on a bill that would cut about $117 million. The reductions require Iowa departments to cut about $88 million from the budget that began last July. An additional $25 million would be taken from various funds and about $4 million would be saved from unused tax credits.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State University says a graduate student, a postdoctoral researcher and a visiting scholar have been blocked from entering the country due to President Donald Trump’s restrictions on travel. ISU President Steven Leath says the university has been in touch with all three and hopes that “they will be able to continue their work and studies with Iowa State in the near future.”

CAM boys avenge loss to Paton-Churdan Monday

The CAM Cougars boys basketball team was able to avenge a loss suffered early in the season by knocking off Paton-Churdan 59-41 on Monday night at home.  The Cougars used a 14-6 third quarter to build a lead they would not relinquish down the stretch. CAM lead much of the first half before the Rockets rallied to take a lead late in the second quarter. The Cougars responded with a three pointer by Austin Chester and a steal and hoop from Thomas Hensley to take the lead back 30-27 at halftime. The Cougars never trailed the rest of the way.  Cougar Head Coach Nick Hodges said it was great to get a win over a team they felt they let one slip away against earlier in the season. Defense seemed to spark the offense for the Cougars and Coach Hodges said he was pleased with how his team played defensively in the second half.

Austin Chester hit a three in each quarter of the game on his way to a team high 16 points. Nic Holste and Thomas Hensley dropped in 15 points each to help CAM improve to 12-5.  Coach Hodges praised the play of Chester recently to help his team win.

The Cougars are home again Tuesday night to face Boyer Valley, a team they beat by one in December.

Paton-Churdan got 19 points in the loss from Jake Berns and Joe Towers dropped in 14. The Rockets are now 7-8 and are back home Tuesday to face Coon Rapids-Bayard.

CAM girls pull away from Paton-Churdan in the second half

The CAM Cougars girls basketball team pulled away from the Paton-Churdan Rockets in the second half on Monday night to win 55-25 in Anita.  It was a slow, methodical pace of play for most of the game and the Cougars led 25-12 at half.  CAM then outscored the Rockets 15-6 in the third quarter and pushed their lead to 22. CAM forced 21 Paton-Churdan turnovers on the night.

Madison Gettler had a big night for the Cougars with 20 points. Sammi Jahde and Felicity Jackson each had 10 to help the Cougars improve their record to 13-5. The Cougars now stay home to host Boyer Valley on Tuesday night.

The Rockets were led by Megan Carey with 9 points as they fall to 1-14 on the season. The Rockets next game is also Tuesday night at home against Coon Rapids-Bayard.

MARTINA BREHENY, 91, of Greenfield, died Monday, January 30th,  at the Community Care Center in Stuart. A  Mass of Christian Burial for MARTINA BREHENY will be held 10:30-a.m. Friday, February 3rd, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Greenfield. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is open from 2-until 7-p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2nd, with the family greeting friends from 5-until 7-p.m.; A Prayer service will be held at 7-p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.  Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Burial will be in the Greenfield Cemetery.  A luncheon will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church following the committal services at the cemetery.  

Memorials may be directed to the Martina Breheny memorial fund to be established by the family at a later date.

MARTINA BREHENY is survived by:

Her children – Mary Ann Breheny, of Greenfield; Teresa Weis, of Creston; Patricia Knauer and husband Steve, of Greenfield; Kathleen Jennings, of Johnston; Regina Sutherland and husband Gary, of Baxter; Phyllis Shilling and husband Kevin, of Greenfield, and John Breheny and wife Leisa, of Greenfield.

Her sisters – Rita Bishop, of Des Moines, and Teresa Powell, of Menlo.

Her brother – John B. O’Brien, of Winterset

16 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren,  other relatives and friends.

ERNA MUHLBAUER ODENDAHL, 90, of Manning died Monday, January 30th at Manning Regional Hospital.  A Mass of Christian Burial for ERNA MUHLBAUER ODENDAHL will be held 10:30-a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2nd, at the Sacred Heart Church in Manning. Ohde Funeral Home in Manning has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Sacred Heart Church in Manning, from 4-until 7-p.m. Wednesday, with a Rosary at 4-p.m. and a Prayer service at 6-p.m. Visitation will resume at the church on Thursday, one-hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Manning.

ERNA MUHLBAUER ODENDAHL is survived by:

Her daughters – Mary (Mark) Frederiksen, of Atlantic; Elizabeth (Allen) Eckhoff, of Beatrice, NE., and Joleen (Bill) Strosahl, of Council Bluffs.

4 step children

Her brother – John (Margaret) Frees, of Manning.

6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 13 step grandchildren, and 24 step-great grandchildren.

Expert says super weed in Iowa should not be ignored

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) -” An invasive weed that can grow up to 7 feet tall has been found in nearly half of Iowa’s counties, and experts say farmers need to act quickly if the plant is found in their fields.

Bob Hartzler is a professor of weed science at Iowa State University. He tells the Telegraph Herald that the species known as Palmer amaranth shouldn’t be ignored and has the potential to drive farmers out of business. The weed prominently appeared in the region’s cotton fields in the 2000s. It was categorized as a “super weed” because of its ability to quickly grow and its resistance to many herbicides.

In 2013, the weed was spotted in five Iowa counties. As of October, it had been seen in nearly half of Iowa’s 99 counties.

2 assault-related arrests in Cass County; Accident in Anita Monday afternoon

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports two people were arrested on assault charges over the past few days. On Friday, 29-year old Jacob William Earl Dofner, of Griswold, was arrested for Domestic Abuse Assault. Dofner was taken to the Cass County Jail and released the following day on his own recognizance. And, on Saturday, 32-year old Nathan Patrick Kinzie, of Atlantic, was charged with felony Assault Causing Serious Bodily Injury, with regarding an incident that occurred at the Cass County Jail. Kinzie remains in custody on $15,000 bond.

On Sunday, Cass County Deputies arrested 28-year old Jairo Cervantes, of Omaha, for felony Theft in the 2nd Degree (Motor Vehicle theft). Cervantes, who was being held at the Cass County Jail, remains held there on $10,000 bond. Also arrested Sunday, was 32-year old Tiffany Kay Bouchard, of Lewis. She was charged with OWI 1st Offense. Bouchard was taken to the Cass County Jail and released later that day on her own recognizance.

And, one person was injured during a single-vehicle accident in Anita this (Monday) afternoon. Officials say a 2000 Chrysler Town & Country driven by 24-year old Tiffany Marie Hansen, of Atlantic, was westbound on Roosevelt Drive when the vehicle went out of control and entered the north ditch before landing on its side. One passenger was transported via private vehicle to CCMH. The accident happened at around 1:42-p.m. Hansen was cited for Failure to Maintain Control. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $3,000.
