Iowa Farm Bureau president discusses delay in US Ag Secretary announcement

There’s growing concern by some in the ag industry that President-elect Donald Trump has not announced his choice for secretary of agriculture. It was a popular subject of conversation at the American Farm Bureau Federation convention that wrapped up Tuesday in Phoenix, Arizona. Iowa Farm Bureau President Craig Hill attended the convention and said most of the names being mentioned for the top post at the USDA are people who are very well qualified

“I’m hoping for a farmer. That would be nice,” Hill said. “But, it kind of looks like Sonny Perdue, the former governor of Georgia…there are some others, but I’ll just look forward to finding out when we can.” Former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack has served as the U.S. Ag Secretary since January of 2009. He was nominated for the post in mid-December of 2008, shortly after Barack Obama was elected president.

Hill said he would prefer if Vilsack’s replacement was also from the Midwest. “You know, Iowa is a state that became number two in the country in terms of agricultural receipts. We overtook Texas. We may volley back-and-forth over time with that distinction, but agriculture production in the Midwest is strong and it drives our economy. We need representation from the Midwest,” Hill said.

Last week, Agri-Pulse reported Tom Vilsack is expected to take over as CEO of the U.S. Dairy Export Council once he leaves office. However, Vilsack told Brownfield Ag News that he has NOT made final plans for the future and he’s solely focused on his remaining days at USDA.

Cyclones begin busy stretch with Wednesday visit to Oklahoma State

Sports

January 11th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State begins a busy week tonight (Wednesday night), with a visit to Oklahoma State. It opens a three game in six day stretch for the Cyclones that will conclude with a Big Monday game against second ranked Kansas. Deonte Burton had 27 points in Saturday’s win over Texas and Cyclones Coach Steve Prohm says they need more of that from their senior forward.

A key against the Cowboys will be slowing down sophomore point guard Jawun Evans, who averages 19 points and is shooting 51 percent from three point range. Oklahoma State is 10-5 under first year coach Brad Underwood but they are 0-3 in the Big-12 after a 61-57 loss at top ranked Baylor.

Tip-time for the game is 7-p.m. at Gallagher-Iba Arena, in Stillwater, OK.

Jacobson focused on improvement as UNI prepares to visit Bradley

Sports

January 11th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson is focused on the future as the Panthers get ready for tonight’s (Wednesday’s) game at Bradley. The Panthers are 0-4 in the Missouri Valley race after an 80-66 loss to Wichita State and their current six-game losing skid is the longest for the program since 2001.

Despite a 5-10 overall record Jacobson says the players have remained positive. Improvement begins with eliminating breakdowns on defense and the mistakes on offense that plagued them in Sunday’s loss to the Shockers.

Bradley is 7-10 overall and 2-2 in the Valley. Tip time from Carver Arena in Peoria, IL, is 8-p.m.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 3:40 a.m. CST

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A prominent lottery official who was stripped of power after a subordinate allegedly carried out a years’long jackpot-rigging scheme received a $284,000 severance payment. A recent tax filing shows the Multi-State Lottery Association made the payment to its longtime executive director Chuck Strutt as part of a “voluntary termination agreement” signed March 31. Strutt says he agreed to leave the association to help it move on after the alleged fraud by employee Eddie Tipton.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad says his priorities for the new Iowa Legislature will include removing state funding for Planned Parenthood and prohibiting public workers from bargaining for their health insurance. Branstad highlighted his plans Tuesday during his annual Condition of the State address. Branstad says he supports redirecting funding toward organizations that don’t perform abortions, though no state taxpayer money is currently used on abortions.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An aide to Gov. Terry Branstad says he generally supports legislation by Senate Republicans that would create a state program for distributing family planning money and excludes funding for Planned Parenthood. Ben Hammes, a spokesman for Branstad, confirmed Tuesday that Branstad supports a state-run program that directs family planning money to organizations that do not perform abortions. Such a program is referenced in a bill filed Monday by Senate Republicans.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — An unexpected $2 million generated by the sale of tax credits will enable Scott Community College to add features to a planned downtown Davenport campus, including a community room, more science lab space and space for a virtual reality program. The Quad-City Times reports interest from U.S. Bank increased the amount of money expected to be raised through tax credits from $4 million to nearly $6.4 million. The total cost of the project is now $30 million.
