Harlan Emergency Management and other officials plan for ice storm

News

January 13th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Shelby County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Seivert said Friday, that Shelby County and City of Harlan officials met Friday afternoon to review emergency plans in anticipation of the potential winter storm this weekend.  With the potential of power outages and dangerous, if not impossible travel conditions, several recommendations were made to make the communities and citizens as safe as possible.

They strongly suggest:

#1. Keep informed by  using the  media outlets, and paying attention to the weather watches and in particular weather warnings. When travel is not recommended, it means that, you should stay home. Cancel unnecessary travel, until conditions improve.

#2. Maintain some extra provisions, food, water, batteries, flashlights, medications, The standard is a three day supply.  If you have special medical needs, make advance arrangements for a prolonged power outage.

#3. If the power does go out, stay calm. Do not call 911. The Emergency Operations Center will be in continual contact with the power providers assessing the potential duration of the outage  and passing along any information which is being made available. You can stay in your home several hours. Check on your elderly neighbors, those who have special medical needs, and those families with very young children. The City of Harlan has a very robust electrical distribution system and well defined plans which will minimize the need for you to seek shelter outside your home.

#4. If you can park off the street, it would help with a more thorough distribution of salt, and road clearing efforts. Please, use the City parking lots, when possible.

#5. Using generators and kerosene heaters, requires specific safety precautions. generators and heaters are sold with safety instructions and they should always be followed. NEVER run a generator in the home. NEVER leave alternate fuel heaters unattended.

#6. A downed power line is a very dangerous situation, never try to  move a downed line! Don’t touch it!  Keep others away. Call the power company  with the location . IF the line appears to be energized call 911 .

Be Prepared, Be safe, a little pre-planning may pay big dividends!

Record year for corn and soybean production in Iowa, U.S.

Ag/Outdoor, News

January 13th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Corn and soybean growers in Iowa and across the country set new records in 2016. That’s according to a report from the USDA Ag Statistics Service. Doug Hartwig, deputy director for the Upper Midwest region, says the corn yield in Iowa is estimated at 2.74 billion bushels. “That’s a record high production. This is nine-percent above the previous record of 2.51 billion bushels set in 2015,” Hartwig says.

Iowa’s average corn yield topped 200 bushels per acre for the first time ever. “The average yield for the state ended up at 203 bushels per acre,” Hartwig says. “It was a pretty phenomenal year for corn production.” Iowa has now led the nation in corn production for 23 consecutive years and 38 of the last 39 years. Soybean production in Iowa in 2016 is estimated at 572 million bushels.

“This is a record high production as well, topping the previous record set (in 2015) at 554 million bushels,” Hartwig says. The average soybean yield last year was 60.5 bushels per acre, also topping the previous record of 56.5 in 2015. Nationally, 2016 corn production totaled 15.1 billion bushels with an average yield of 174.4 bushels per acre.

Those are both all-time highs, besting previous records set in 2014. U.S. soybean production totaled 4.3 billion bushels with an average yield of 52.1 bushels per acre, also new records.

Western Iowa native is named to national wheelchair basketball team

Sports

January 13th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

A western Iowa native who plays on the wheelchair basketball team at the University of Nebraska at Omaha has been selected for the U-S Men’s World Championships Team. Brent Regier, of Woodbine, is a junior at U-N-O and he’ll travel with the team to Argentina for a qualifier later this month.

“It’s really exciting to be a part of this team and only have been playing the sport for a few years,” Regier says. “It’s really cool to be able to participate at such a high level so quickly with a bunch of other players from across the country who share the same passion for the sport.” Regier and one of his U-N-O teammates — Jeromie Meyer of Henderson, Nebraska — were just notified a few days ago they’d made the 12-member national team.

“We had a training camp this past week in Colorado Springs where they invited in about 30 other guys from across the country who they thought might be a good fit for the team,” Regier says. “They narrowed it down to 12 of us that are able to travel this last Saturday we found out.” Regier says he’s ready for this latest challenge.

“I won’t have to prepare too hard,” Regier says. “Coach Mike (Kult) had us in good shape and taught us the fundamentals and everything we needed to know going in. The biggest part there was just pushing hard the whole time and really being committed to the cause.”

The team will travel to Buenos Aires, Argentina for the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation Continental Qualifier running from January 22nd to the 29th. The top two teams will go on to the world championships, scheduled for June in Toronto, Canada. Team USA has reached the championship game in three of the last five world championships, winning the title in 2005 and 2009.

Man accused of killing woman who’d been reported missing

News

January 13th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa authorities intend to file murder and other charges against a man accused of killing a Des Moines resident who’d been reported missing. The Des Moines Police Department said in a news release Friday that prosecutors have approved charges of robbery, burglary and first-degree murder against 22-year-old Kyle Jepson, of Des Moines. He’s accused of killing Gloria Gary, who was reported missing Jan. 5 and was last seen Jan. 3

Her car was spotted Wednesday in Parowan City, Utah, and again Thursday in Tooele  County, Utah. Authorities say Jepson was taken into custody there and will be returned to Iowa. Des Moines police say they obtained a search warrant for Gary’s home and found a body believed to be hers. A positive identification awaits autopsy results.
