MOLINE, Ill. (AP) — Caitlin Ingle’s jumper sent the game into overtime where she scored five points and led No. 20 Drake over Northern Iowa 74-69 on Sunday for the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship and the Bulldogs’ conference-record 22nd consecutive victory.

The top-seeded Bulldogs (28-4) were making their 12th tournament title-game appearance, winning their sixth championship and first since 2007. Ingle, the tournament MVP and the conference’s all-time assists leader, scored a career-high 22 points, with seven assists and six rebounds.

With 5.5 seconds left in regulation, Ellie Herzberg came off a screen, took a pass from Madison Weekly and hit a 3-pointer to give UNI (24-8) the lead. After a timeout, Ingle made her tying jumper from the free-throw line.

In overtime, Herzberg and Becca Jonas exchanged 3-pointers before Ingle was fouled while scoring on a drive and completed the 3-point play. Ingle added a short bank shot before Becca Hittner made a free throw for a six-point edge. Herzberg made her fifth and final 3-pointer with 23 seconds left before Drake’s Lizzy Wendell capped the scoring with two free throws.

GOP lawmakers in Iowa advance conservative wish list

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — About two month into the session, Republicans have moved quickly to capitalize on their control of both legislative chambers, but plenty of work remains as they push through a conservative agenda.

Among the priority issues will be efforts to restrict abortion rights. The Senate passed a bill that would forgo federal Medicaid dollars to create a state-run family planning program that excludes abortion providers. The measure is awaiting House activity. Anti-abortion groups are also supporting a bill that would ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

On wages, the House approved a bill banning local governments from approving a minimum wage that exceeds the state rate of $7.25, and the measure now shifts to the Senate. The Senate also will take up a bill that would require people to show identification at voting places and a measure making sweeping changes to Iowa’s gun laws.

AP Source: Chiefs, S Sorensen reach $16M, 4-year agreement

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs and safety Daniel Sorensen have agreed to a $16 million, four-year contract that keeps the restricted free agent off the market, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The deal includes $8 million guaranteed and more than $2 million in incentives, according to the person, who spoke Saturday on condition of anonymity because Sorensen must still pass a physical.

Kansas City put a second-round tender on Sorensen this week, which meant he could have tested the market. But the Chiefs could then match any offer or get a second-round pick as compensation. But considering coach Andy Reid’s affinity for Sorensen and how well he played last season, both on defense and special teams, it made sense for the Chiefs to try to retain him. Sorensen has appeared in 16 games each of the past two seasons.

Game Design major, E-Sports team coming to Grand View University

News

March 12th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Grand View University in Des Moines will be launching a new academic discipline unique to Iowa. Beginning this fall, students at the school will be able to major in game design. Grand View administrators say students who pursue a bachelor’s degree in Game Design will be trained in such things as animation, video production and 3-D illustration. English professor Joshua Call, who describes himself as a “lifetime gamer,” says he finds the intersection of storytelling with decision-making in gaming an important academic pursuit.

“Games are, if you break them down, a way of rendering complicated information, decision making, and ideas through a graphic and interactive format,” Call says. The introduction of the major in gaming design comes as Grand View is set to join around 50 colleges nationwide in making E-Sports a varsity level activity. The vice president of student affairs at Grand View, Jay Prescott, says top players are already being recruited and offered scholarships.

“Just like other sports, there are positions on the team within the game of League of Legends, so we will actually recruit positions just like you would in basketball or football,” Prescott says. The E-Sports team will go up against other squads, via online video, in the five-player game called League of Legends. Prescott says interest in E-Sports is rapidly growing. He expects the number of schools participating in the video game competition will double within the next year.
