Iowa Volleyball Falls to Maryland

CORALVILLE, Iowa — University of Iowa volleyball fell to Maryland, 3-0, Saturday evening inside Xtream Arena.

Redshirt freshman Nataly Moravec led the way for the Hawkeyes, posting seven kills and hitting at a clip of .412. Senior setter Bailey Ortega led the team in assists with 12, and Kaia Mateo followed closely behind with 10. Redshirt sophomore Sydney Dennis registered eight digs — the team high on the night.

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to play on Friday, Nov. 3 against the Wolverines. First serve is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT on B1G+ (subscription required).

Hawkeyes Tally Six Wins at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – University of Iowa swimming fell to Vanderbilt, 138-124 at the Centennial Sportsplex on Saturday. The diving squad finished competition at Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.

“Overall, we had some very good performances today and continued to race with determination and focus until the end,” Iowa head coach Nathan Mundt said. “After being behind in the team score, we’re proud of how we finished. Winning the 400 free relay at the end of the meet showed pride. We’ll continue to learn from this meet and look forward to competing against Nebraska.”

The Hawkeyes tallied five individual wins and a win in the 400-free relay on the day. Freshman Olivia Swalley registered three herself, including etching her name on Iowa’s top-10 list, twice. Swalley posted the ninth fastest 100-breaststroke (1:02.16) and the seventh fastest 200-breaststroke (2:17.41) performances in program history and claimed her third win of the day in the 200-individual medley (2:03.26).

Freshman Jenna Kerr had an impressive start to her career, finishing first place in the 200 freestyle (1:50.40) and the 500 freestyle (4:57.49).

Iowa finished out the meet strong with Kerr, sophomore Sabina Kupcova, freshman Josie Hood and sophomore Scarlet Martin teaming up in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:23.72 to clinch the win.

Down the road at Ohio State, sophomore diver Geneva Pauly finished fourth in the platform dive competition with a final score of 222.40 to lead the squad. Freshman Simone Beinlich set a new season best in the 1-meter dive with a 256.30, finishing sixth overall.

The Hawkeyes hit the road again on Friday, Nov. 10 as they take on the Cornhuskers in Lincoln, Nebraska, inside Devaney Natatorium at 4 p.m. (CT). The dual will be live streamed on B1G+ (subscription required).

Reminder: AHS presents Cinderella Nov. 3rd-the 5th

(Atlantic, Iowa) – The Atlantic High School will present the musical Cinderella next weekend (November 3rd, 4th, and 5th). Rodgers + Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA was originally written for television — debuting in 1957 starring Julie Andrews. The show made its Broadway debut in 2013. The show includes nine named characters with a large cast and crew.
The main cast include:  Genevieve McCalla as Ella, Dawsen Sorensen as Prince Topher, Grace Mitchell as Marie, Brady Wagner as Madame, Josie Handlos as Charlotte, Delaney Hinman as Gabrielle, Ismael Elba as Jean-Michelle, Donovan Hedrington as Sebastian, and Collin Harris as Lord Pinkleton.
 
Shows will begin at 7:30 PM on Friday and Saturday evening, and 2:30 PM on Sunday afternoon. Tickets will be sold at the door, and doors will open 30 minutes prior to showtime. The Avery Andersen Foundation will cover the price of admission for all tickets to the Sunday showing.

Clarke County woman arrested in Creston on Sex Abuse and multiple, other charges; Creston woman arrested on drug charges

(Creston, Iowa) – Police in Creston report a Clarke County woman was arrested Friday morning on multiple charges. 26-year-old Roni Lynn Steil, of Woodburn, was arrested at the Creston Union County Law Enforcement Center (LEC). Steil was charged on a Union County Warrant for Violation of Conditions of Pretrial Release. Original charges 2 counts Sexual Abuse 2nd Degree, Administering Harmful substances, Incest, 2 counts lascivious Acts with a Child-Permit/Cause to Fondle, Lascivious acts with a Child-Fondle or Touch, 2 counts Child Endangerment, 3 counts Indecent Contact with a Child a Class B Felony. Steil was taken to the Union County Jail and later transferred to the Adams County Jail, where her cash-only bond was set at $95,000.

Saturday afternoon, Creston Police arrested 44-year-old Lela Ann Churchwell, of Creston, at McKinley Park. Churchwell was charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Consume Alcoholic Beverage in Public Place-1st Offense and a Union County Warrant for FTA (Failure to Appear) on a charge of Disorderly Conduct-Loud Raucous Noise. Churchwell was taken to the Union County Jail and later taken to the Adams County Jail. Her bond was set at $900, cash or surety.

2 arrested in Red Oak early Sunday morning

Two people were arrested early this (Sunday) morning, in Red Oak. According to Red Oak Police, officers arrested 25-year-old Lyle Jordan Young, of Red Oak, in the 1200 block of E. Reed Street. Young was charge with Domestic Assault-choking/bodily injury.

Officers also arrested 42-year-old Tracy Ann Cody, of Red Oak, on an active Montgomery County warrant for Theft in the 4th Degree. Both subjects were being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $1,000 bond, each.

Stanton man arrested following a non-injury accident Saturday

An investigation into a property damage accident Saturday in Montgomery County, resulted in the arrest of a man from Stanton. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports 68-year-old Wendell Keith Gourley was arrested in the area of Highway 34 at mile marker 47, and charged with OWI/1st offense. Authorities say Gourley was driving a vehicle that went out of control and left the road before striking a cable barrier, causing heavy damage to the barrier and the passenger side of the vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Corning man arrested on Attempted Murder & other charges

(Corning, Iowa) – Sheriff’s Officials in Adams County report the arrest on four felony charges, of a man from Corning. 38-year-old Cole Justin Inman faces charges that include 3 Class-B Felony counts of Attempted Murder, and a Class-C Felony charge of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. Inman was also charged with 3 counts of Child Endangerment, and one count of Reckless Use of a Firearm, the latter two of which are aggravated misdemeanors.

Authorities say Inman allegedly fired a pistol at three teenagers. A criminal complaint said Inman was chasing after the teens in his white Chevrolet Traverse because he thought the teens’ tan Chevrolet truck was on his property the night before. After both vehicles stopped at the intersection of Highway 148 and 130th Street, deputies said Inman grabbed a .45 Ruger semi-automatic pistol from his car. The complaint said Inman shot the gun multiple times at the truck, leaving bullet holes in the rear bumper and tailgate.

According to deputies, Inman’s wife and his four children were also in his truck at the time of the incident.

Cole Inman was booked into the Adams County Jail, where he was being held without bond.

Atlantic XC has Positive Results from State

Two Atlantic Cross Country runners qualified and competed at the State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge Saturday afternoon. The weather was hanging in the low 30’s and the wind chill was even colder. For the girls side Pella’s Marissa Ferebee won the individual title with a time of 18:38, closely beating out Lindsey Sonderman from Harlan. In third from Sioux Center was Audrina Jones, fourth Avery Rump with Fort Madison, and fifth place was awarded to Iris Dahl from Washington.

Atlantic senior Claire Pellett improved her placing from last year at 15th, to 12th Saturday afternoon. Pellett ran a quick 19:16 pace and commented on how the weather conditions helped her compete.

After the race was over for Pellett she had time to reflect on what being a part of Atlantic’s Cross Country Program had done for her and the many reasons to be grateful.

The final girls team standings had Pella winning first with 80 points, Mount Vernon-Lisbon at second, Gilbert third, Sioux Center at fourth, and Glenwood at fifth.

The boys side of the State Meet also had impressive individual performances. Canaan Dunham from Pella won first place with a quick time of 15:18. In second place following closely behind was Ethan Eichorn from Lewis Central. Third place was Nathan Vander Waal from Pella, fourth was Micah Rees, and fifth place from Glenwood was Andrew Smith.

The top boy’s team was Gilbert was a score of 57 points and all runners finishing at 18th or better. In second was Pella, third Lewis Central, fourth Carlisle, and fifth Washington.

Atlantic’s lone male runner was senior Bennett Whetstone finishing at 103rd and with a time of 17:37. The goal of the meet for Whetstone was to run hard, but also take in the whole experience of what it’s like to run at State. He was surprised at what he found.

Whetstone’s cross country career ended when he crossed the finish line. He will miss the people he ran with it and knows the goodbye will be hard.

Atlantic Head Cross Country Coach Dan Vargason is continually impressed by the runners in his program and how they continue to improve Atlantic Cross Country as a whole.

Even with the strong performances and positive results from Trojan Cross Country every year. Coach Vargason did discuss that they need more kids to come out for next year.

Atlantic Cross Country will hold their end of the year banquet Sunday October 29th at Atlantic High School.
