The Atlantic Trojans softball team will play for a trip to State on Monday night in the Regional Final after dispatching of Cherokee, Washington 10-0 in 5 innings of play on Friday. The Trojans executed a great early double play and then brought home 4 runs in the bottom of the first. Kennedy Goergen drove in 2 with a single and Jada Jensen and Lauren Nicholas got one run in each by putting the ball in play. The Trojans went on to add 3 in the 2nd, 1 in the 4th, and 2 in the 5th to seal the early win.

Kennedy Goergen drove in four runs to lead the way at the plate. Atlantic Head Coach Terry Hinzmann said she has been playing well in the 5th spot in the order.

Goergen said she was just focusing on putting the ball in play.

Olivia Engler had another stellar outing in the circle for the Trojans with 11 strikeouts and allowing just 3 hits. Coach Hinzmann thought she flustered the Braves throughout.

Third baseman Jada Jensen said the staff prepared them well for what Cherokee was going to bring.

Cherokee ended their season with a record of 3-19. Atlantic improved to 32-5 on the season and now are in the spot they hoped to be when the season started. Hosting a Regional Final with a chance to punch their ticket to State. Goergen said they are very excited for the opportunity.

The Trojans will face MOC-Floyd Valley in that Class 3A Region 2 Final on Monday. The Dutchmen beat Okoboji 2-1 on Friday evening to advance. We’ll have coverage on KJAN with pregame at 6:45 p.m. on Monday.

ST. LOUIS, MO., July 9, 2021 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have signed veteran right-handed pitcher Luis García to a free-agent contract, and that he will join the team for its series-opening game this afternoon in Chicago.

To make room for García on the team’s 26-player active roster, right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo was optioned to Memphis (AAA).  Pitcher Carlos Martínez (right thumb sprain) has been transferred to the 60-day Injured List allowing for García’s addition to the team’s 40-player Major League roster.

García, 34, has spent eight seasons in the majors with Philadelphia (2013-18), Los Angeles Angels (2019) and Texas (2020).  The 6-2, 240-pound García has appeared in 326 career games (all but four as a reliever) and has compiled a career mark of 14-17 with a 4.26 ERA in 315.0 innings pitched.

García worked in 60 or more games in three of five seasons from 2015-2019, including a career-high 72 in 2015 for the Phillies, and he logged 59 games in 2018.

The Santo Domingo, D.R. native was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as an International free agent in 2004 just days before his 17th birthday and he debuted in the States in 2007 with the Gulf Coast League Dodgers.  García has appeared in 258 career games in the minors, most recently with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.

In 18 games for the Scranton/Wilke-Barre RailRiders this season, García was 1-2 with a 3.63 ERA, striking out 19 in 17.1 innings of relief with just three walks allowed.  García, who was released by the Yankees on July 6, made his last appearance for the RailRiders on June 26.

García joins recent additions to the Cardinals pitching staff over the past three weeks that have included Wade LeBlanc, Brandon Waddell and Justin Miller.

García has been assigned uniform no. 66.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Ray Robinson has joined the University of Iowa track and field coaching staff, Iowa director of track and field Joey Woody announced Wednesday. Robinson will lead Iowa’s throws group.

Robinson joins the Hawkeyes following an 11-year stint as associate head coach at Tiffin University in Tiffin, Ohio. Robinson coached both the men and women at Tiffin University. His student-athletes captured four NCAA Division II national championships and five NCAA silver medals. He coach 40 first-team All-Americans and saw the school record in each of Tiffin’s 12 throwing events broken during his tenure.

Tiffin won two national titles and has captured seven trophies at the NCAA Championships since 2015.

“We are extremely excited to welcome Ray, Kristen and their young family to the University of Iowa,” Woody said. “Ray has done a tremendous job developing the throws program at Tiffin University, turning the Dragons into a DII national power in 11 seasons. He knows how to recruit and develop athletes in every throws event. He has an energetic personality and is very motivated to get started with our talented group of throwers. I cannot wait for him to join our staff and continue to take our throws program to the highest level.”

“I am thankful for the opportunity to join the University of Iowa and be a part of the winning culture that Coach Woody and the entire coaching staff has built,” Robinson said. “Coach (Eric) Werskey did a great job recruiting talented, hard-working individuals to Iowa’s throws group and I am excited to hit the ground running and build on the success going on here in Iowa City. The coaching staff, university administration and members of the community have welcomed my family with open arms throughout the entire process. I cannot wait to raise my girls in Iowa City and get to work with the team.”

On the senior level, Robinson has worked extensively with John Godina, a four-time world champion, Olympic medalist and holder of the NCAA Championships shot put record. He coached three-time NCAA DII national champion Coy Blair at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials and the 2017 World University Games, and Adriane Blewitt at the 2012 Olympic Trials.

Robinson is a two-time graduate of Tiffin University. He earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in 2010 and his Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources in 2015. He previously held the TU school record in the discus throw and is on the top-10 performance list in hammer throw and weight throw. He is a three-time All-GLIAC honoree and was selected to the GLIAC All-Academic team four times while twice earning Academic All-America honors.

Robinson is married to Kristen Robinson, a former All-American shot putter for the Dragons and TU Hall of Fame inductee. Ray and Kristen have three daughters, McKenzie Jo, Jordy Rae and Emileigh James.
