Court battle looms for 46 horses seized from ‘heartbreaking’ conditions

News

November 6th, 2023 by admin

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is now caring for the 46 horses that were seized from a property in Dallas County near Madrid (MAD-rid) last week. The Dallas County Sheriff charged the owner of the horses, 78-year-old Linda Kilbourne of Johnston, with livestock neglect — and says more charges are pending. Robyn Dobernecker (DOB-er-necker), the A-R-L’s animal welfare intervention coordinator, says the property owner did not surrender custody of the horses, which means a legal battle looms.

She says it’s taken several days to physically move all of the horses to the A-R-L facility, get them all assessed, and start giving them the medical treatment they desperately needed. Dobernecker says the horses were living in heartbreaking conditions.

It’s incredibly expensive to care for a single horse, and suddenly having nearly four dozen of them — many in poor condition — is putting a strain on the agency’s resources.

The website is A-R-L-dash-iowa-dot-org (ARL-Iowa.org). Dobernecker was at the property in Dallas County last week and has been on many such calls during her career.

If the A-R-L is granted custody of the horses, she says they’ll eventually be put up for adoption, once they’re healthy.

UCF, OSU and UT Receive Big 12 Football Week 10 Awards

Oklahoma State’s Ollie Gordon II (co-offensive) became just the second student-athlete in Conference history to earn four consecutive Big 12 Player of the Week awards. He was joined by his teammate Xavier Benson (defensive), UCF’s RJ Harvey (co-offensive) and the Texas duo of Adonai Mitchell (newcomer) and Bert Auburn (special teams) as Week 10 honorees. Mitchell picked up his third award of the season while the others are first-time recipients.

Gordon had another impressive performance on Saturday, producing 156 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns in the Cowboys’ 27-24 Bedlam win over No. 9 Oklahoma. He logged 138 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground, along with an 18-yard reception. His first touchdown came on a 20-yard run to cap OSU’s game-opening drive, and his second came on a two-yard run with just under eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Cowboys the lead for good. The sophomore has now rushed for 100+ yards in six straight games, which ties for the sixth-longest streak in program history. He has scored multiple touchdowns in four straight games with 10 total scores, including three consecutive games with two or more rushing touchdowns. Gordon’s 138 rushing yards marked the most by any player against the Oklahoma defense this season, and his two rushing touchdowns matched the most against OU this year.

Harvey tallied his fourth consecutive 100-yard rushing game, as the Orlando native recorded a career-high 164 yards on 20 carries with a career-best three touchdowns. He is the first UCF player with four consecutive 100-yard games since Latavius Murray in 2012. Additionally, his 164 rushing yards are the most by a Knights running back since Isaiah Bowser rushed for 172 against Boise State in the 2021 season opener. Harvey had eight different runs during the game for 10 or more yards to give the Knights their first Big 12 Conference win and first win at Cincinnati since 2017. The senior interdisciplinary studies major has 876 rushing yards this season and is on pace to become the first 1,000-yard rusher for the program since 2018.

Benson was all over the field in Saturday’s win over OU, recording seven tackles, a sack, a quarterback hurry, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and three tackles for loss, which is the most by a Cowboy this season and the most by any Big 12 player this week. The senior LB is the first Big 12 player since UT’s Joseph Ossai in 2020 to record at least three TFL, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in one game. Benson helped set the tone early. On Oklahoma’s second drive of the game, he recorded a strip-sack and then recovered a fumble just two plays later. The university studies student entered Saturday with half a sack on the season and no fumbles forced or recovered in his career. In addition to his impact forcing turnovers, one of Benson’s most impactful tackles included a six-yard tackle for loss against Drake Stoops on third down with about four minutes remaining in the first half. The play forced a 51-yard field goal attempt that sailed just wide. Another big tackle also came on third down, as he helped bring down Jalil Farooq five yards short of the marker before OU’s final offensive play that was stopped to seal the three-point Cowboy win.

Mitchell caught eight passes for a career-high 149 receiving yards and one touchdown in Texas’ 33-30 win over No. 23 Kansas State. The junior physical culture and sports student had 96 yards receiving on three catches in the first quarter alone in helping the Longhorns establish a 10-0 lead. He pulled in his team-leading eighth receiving touchdown of the year on a 37-yarder, and followed that with a 47-yard reception that set the offense up for a field goal. He later caught three more passes for 44 yards on a fourth quarter field goal drive that regained the lead for the Longhorns after the Wildcats had tied it at 27-27. That included a 14-yarder on a second-and-20 that led to a manageable fourth-down conversion to get into field goal range.

Auburn made all four of his field goal attempts and three extra points for 15 of the Longhorns’ points in a 33-30 win over No. 23 K-State. Auburn connected on field goals from 32, 49, 34 and 42 yards with the last two coming in the latter part of the fourth quarter and overtime to break ties and regain three-point leads for Texas. The one in the fourth quarter came with just over six minutes remaining for a 30-27 lead, and the 42-yarder in overtime provided the margin of victory after the Longhorns’ defense held the Wildcats scoreless on their possession. The junior economics major has now made his last eight field goal attempts.

Secretary Pate partners with Hy-Vee to celebrate Iowa veterans

News

November 6th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(DES MOINES, Iowa) – Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate and Hy-Vee stores are once again joining forces to honor Iowa’s military members during Hy-Vee Homefront, Hy-Vee’s annual Veterans Day breakfast. Hy-Vee will host a free breakfast at all Iowa store locations for veterans and active service members on Friday, November 10. Hy-Vee will also be circulating the Iowa Secretary of State’s “Honor A Veteran” postcards, encouraging Iowans to honor a loved one who has served our country.

“We really cannot say thank you enough to Iowa’s veterans and active military members,” said Secretary Pate. “We look forward to partnering with Hy-Vee every year for this opportunity to celebrate the brave Iowa men and women who have stepped up to serve their country and defend our freedoms.” Veterans and active-duty military will be able to receive this free breakfast between 6 A.M. and 10 A.M on November 10 in honor of Veterans Day at any Iowa Hy-Vee store. This event also serves as a way for the community to show their appreciation and gratitude to our local service members.

Secretary Pate’s ‘Honor a Veteran with your Vote’ program is another way individuals can show thanks to Iowa veterans.“These brave men and women have fought tirelessly for our freedoms, including our right to vote, and there is no better way to honor their service than by exercising that right and honoring them with our vote,” said Secretary Pate.

Secretary Pate and Hy-Vee have partnered to supply approximately 36,000 ‘Honor A Veteran’ postcards for Iowans to fill out on Veterans Day. Service members can use these postcards to write a tribute to a fellow service member, a loved one, themselves, or to give to a loved one to complete. These postcards will be returned to the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office and tributes will be posted online at sos.iowa.gov/HonorAVeteran and Facebook.com/HonorAVeteran.

Both the person who creates the tribute and the service member, if they are still with us, will receive an ‘Honor A Veteran’ lapel pin from Secretary Pate in the mail. Pin recipients are encouraged to wear their pin with pride while voting. Secretary Pate hopes to inspire Iowans to participate in this breakfast and complete the postcards to honor Iowa service members this Veterans Day.

Guard member who became a symbol of Flight 232 response dies

News

November 6th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A retired Iowa Air National Guard member who became a symbol of the effort to save lives in the crash of United Flight 232 at the Sioux City Airport in 1989 has died. Colonel Dennis Nielsen of the 185th Air wing was caught in a photo carrying three-year-old Spencer Bailey from the plane wreckage following the crash. Gary Brown was Woodbury County’s Emergency Services Director at the time and was also a friend of Nielsen. “Denny was a very humble person. He did not enjoy the notoriety that came with that photograph,” Brown says. “But he also was respectful of the fact that his photograph was representing the hundreds and hundreds of emergency responders in the hundreds of people from the military and the 185th.”

Flight 232 Spirit of Siouxland Memorial featuring Colonel Dennis Nielsen

The picture by Sioux City Journal Photographer Gary Anderson later became the model for the Spirit of Siouxland Sculpture on the Sioux City riverfront. Sioux City’s response to the disaster was praised across the country. Brown says Nielsen was an early member of the local team that train for such emergencies. “Denny first joined with us in the disaster committee preparedness when it was first established back in the 80s. He was assigned there by Commander Dennis Swanstrom and he was an amazing ambassador for the 185th,” he says. Nielsen retired from the 185th Air Wing in 202 and moved to Raleigh North Carolina, where he died in September at the age of 76. Brown kept in touch with Nielsen.

“We’re gonna miss Denny, he’s an Iowa boy he was born in Shelby, Iowa on February of 1947,” Brown says. “And I’m going to miss him personally we just wish him a speedy journey.” The plane crashed and cartwheeled down the runway, but the effort of first responders helped save 184 of the 296 people on board the plane.

Higgins is one of 12 semifinalists for the Butkus Award, presented to the nation’s most outstanding linebacker. He is one of three players from the Big Ten Conference on the list along with Ohio State’s Tommy Eichenberg and Penn State’s Curtis Jacobs.

Higgins leads the Big Ten and ranks second nationally (the most by a Power 5 player) with 12.6 tackles per game. He has two 15+ and seven 10+ tackle games this season.
