COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — The western Iowa sheriff’s deputy who was fatally wounded in a jail escape last week will be laid to rest on Monday. The funeral for Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Burbridge will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. It will be open to the public.

Afterward, more than 1,000 law enforcement vehicles are expected to escort Burbridge’s body back to the funeral home. Some mourners are expected to line up along the procession route to pay their respects to Burbridge.

Police say Wesley Correa-Carmenaty was being transported to the Council Bluffs jail after sentencing last Monday when he attacked Burbridge and another deputy, grabbed one of their guns and shot them before fleeing in a jail van. He was recaptured in neighboring Omaha, Nebraska.

ATLANTA (AP) — Tommy Pham hit two homers, including a two-run drive in the 14th inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals recovered after blowing a four-run lead to beat the Atlanta Braves 6-4 on Sunday and complete a three-game sweep.

Pham’s long home run in the 14th off Josh Collmenter (0-1) drove in rookie Magneuris Sierra, who reached on second baseman Jace Peterson’s fielding error. Recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Friday, Pham had a career-high four hits and drove in three runs.

Freddie Freeman’s 11th homer off Brett Cecil in the eighth tied the game, completing Atlanta’s comeback from a 4-0 deficit. Matt Carpenter had a first-inning homer for St. Louis. He went deep in all three games during the series, giving him seven home runs this season.

After teen’s death, Iowa lawmakers skeptical of agency plans

News

May 7th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Department of Human Services is facing scrutiny from legislators as it tries to implement rules for the state foster care system that it says will better protect children.

As the agency strives to make changes it says are necessary, lawmakers are pushing back against the efforts and criticizing the agency for focusing on small fixes. The criticism follows high-profile child abuse cases last year, which led some lawmakers to say the agency is no longer credible.

The newly proposed foster care rules change guidelines for child placement agencies and alter rules for hazard protections, bedrooms and such details as pet waste disposal.

The process for those rules to be enacted requires a public notice period until May 16, during which lawmakers and citizens can voice opinions.

Atlantic Head Coach Ed DenBeste: “Today was a good test for our golf team.  Several state qualifies from last year were here in Carroll.  We knew we had to play one of our best rounds to win.  We also played from the blue tees which made the course more challenging today.

This was a great win for us.  We beat last years score by 7 strokes and played different tees.  Would have liked to see Jake a little lower today.  Had struggles some with the putter.  Great to see Matt and Nate shoot their score today.  Nate has really come on in the last few weeks.  Ben was a little high as well.  Need him to bring that down as we head into next week.  Also want to see Zac get his score down.  He had to battle today.  Just wasn’t there.  This was Cyle’s first time on the course.  Good score but I know he wanted better.  Hope this is a good boost for us heading into Conference and Sectional play.”
