District investigating allegations against superintendent

News

April 28th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – The Sioux City school board is investigating allegations against the district superintendent that were raised by the district budget director before he was ousted. Board President Mike Krysl told the Sioux City Journal earlier this week that the board “is undertaking an investigation that we think is an appropriate follow-up to the allegations that were raised.”

The board approved a resignation package April 10 for budget director John Chalstrom, who’d been placed on leave Feb. 13. Chalstrom had accused Superintendent Paul Gausman of being a bully and creating a hostile workplace and threatening Chalstrom’s job if he shared alternative budget options with school board members outside regular board meetings.

Gausman has denied Chalstrom’s assertions.

A few IOWA Cubs to get World Series rings tonight

Sports

April 28th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

A “ring” ceremony will be staged on the field before the Iowa Cubs game this (Friday) evening in Des Moines. The Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians last fall to win the World Series, but team members didn’t get their commemorative rings until earlier this month. A few of the IOWA Cubs who spent time up on Chicago’s roster last season will get 2016 World Series Championship Rings tonight (Friday).

Iowa Cubs owner Michael Gartner and Sam Bernabe, the long-time president and general manager of the I-Cubs, are getting rings, too. The triple-A franchise in Des Moines has been associated with the big league Cubs since 1981.

The Chicago Cubs’ World Series rings have the iconic “C” logo made out of rubies and sapphires. There are also 108 diamonds — signifying the 108 years between World Series titles for the club.

Chiefs move up to take QB Mahomes 10th overall in draft

Sports

April 28th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs boldly moved up in the NFL draft on Thursday night to select Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the 10th overall pick, giving them an heir apparent to veteran Alex Smith.

Kansas City sent its first-round picks this year and next year and one of two third-round picks in this year’s draft to Buffalo, climbing from the No. 27 pick to take the second QB off the board. North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky went to the Chicago Bears second overall, while Heisman Trophy winner Deshaun Watson of Clemson went to the Houston Texas at No. 12.

It’s the third time in the common draft era that Kansas City has taken a quarterback in the first round, and the first since Todd Blackledge in 1983. Mahomes is also the second QB to be taken in the first round by a Reid-coach team following Donovan McNabb with Philadelphia in 1999.

The Chiefs were in the market for a quarterback with Smith nearing the end of his career. The former No. 1 overall pick of the 49ers, Smith arrived in Kansas City with Reid and general manager John Dorsey four years ago. And he’s played well enough to lead the Chiefs to three playoff appearances, an AFC West title this past season and earn a $68 million, four-year contract extension that could keep him with the Chiefs through the 2018 season.

That timetable is important: It gives Mahomes at least one season and possibly two to learn Reid’s offense from a trusted veteran. And if Mahomes proves to be a quick study, Smith can be released after next season with a relatively minimal impact on the salary cap. Mahomes posted up eye-popping numbers in a pass-heavy offense geared to putting up points. He started 29 games over three seasons and became only the third player in Football Bowl Subdivision history with multiple seasons of 5,000 yards total offense.

He threw for 5,052 yards with 41 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Dexter Fowler, Greg Garcia and Matt Adams each had three hits as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 6-4 on Thursday night to sweep a day-night doubleheader. The Cardinals won the opener, 8-4, in 11 innings on Matt Carpenter’s grand slam. St. Louis scored three times in the first inning of the nightcap.

After Fowler and Garcia hit back-to-back singles, Matt Carpenter plated a run with a groundout and Stephen Piscotty hit an RBI sacrifice fly. Randal Grichuk followed with an infield single and scored on Matt Adams’ opposite-field double into the left field corner.

Fowler added a solo home run, his third of the season, in the second inning. Matt Adams had an RBI single in the third. Piscotty had an RBI fielder’s choice in the fourth to make it 6-0.

Adam Wainwright (2-3) got the win in the nightcap while Matt Bowman (1-0) won the opener. Ryan Tepera (1-1) and Casey Lawrence (0-3) took the losses.
