IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa Track and Field senior Kat Moody moved to second on Iowa’s all-time list at the Iowa Open on Friday afternoon.
The shot put specialist from Clive, Iowa, won the event with a 17.00-meter (55’ 9.25”) mark to improve her lifetime best and climb to second in program history. At the time of competition, Moody’s throw was the 20th-best in the nation.
“Overall, it was another great day for the throws group, led by Kat Moody,” Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “She’s on the verge of big things and she showed that today.”
“Kat had an incredible series,” Iowa throws coach Ray Robinson added. “The 17-meter barrier has been a goal she has been chasing this season. She wanted to get that off her back going into Big Ten’s. She has a legitimate shot to win the title. We’re in for a fun week.”
The Hawkeyes posted eight event wins and 12 new personal bests at the indoor home finale. Moody was joined by redshirt sophomore Ella Meeuwsen and junior Kaleba Jack as champions of field events. Meeuwsen won the women’s high jump with a mark of 1.70 meters. Jack secured the long jump title, leaping 7.22 meters.
On the track, senior sprinter Joe Stein won the men’s 60-meter dash in 6.82, while senior hurdler Gratt Reed claimed the men’s 60-meter hurdles title in 7.77. Senior Katie Moore won the women’s 600-meter race in 1:35.85. Senior Kelli Tosic claimed the women’s 5,000-meter title in 17:21.48.
Junior Kalil Johnson doubled up on lifetime bests in the men’s 60-meter hurdles. He ran a 7.89 in the prelims, before placing second in the finals with a 7.83. Sophomore Isabelle Woody notched two career bests on the day, including a 9.81 in the 60-meter hurdles and a 4.88-meter mark in the long jump.
UP NEXT: The Hawkeyes head to the Big Ten Indoor Championships at The SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, on Feb. 23-24.
