DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – U.S. Census Bureau data show Iowa’s average commute is nearly 6 minutes shorter than the national average. The Des Moines Register reports that the average Iowa commute is 19.1 minutes. That ties the state with Kansas for the seventh-fastest average commute in the country. The national average is 25 minutes.The Census Bureau’s American Community Survey says North Dakota residents enjoy the nation’s shortest average commute: 16.1 minutes.
The Iowa Transportation Department says Iowan residents travel an average of 11.5 miles to work. The census data say Madison County residents have the longest average commute: 29 minutes. Many of them work in the Des Moines area.
In the immediate KJAN listening area, commuting times include: 17.9-minutes in Cass County; 21-minutes in Adair County; 20.2-minutes in Adams and Pottawattamie Counties; 19.3-minutes in Audubon County; 27-minutes in Guthrie County; 20.6-minutes in Montgomery County, and 17.6-minutes in Shelby County. The state’s shortest average commute is the 12.3 minutes in Sioux County.
Police in Red Oak are investigating a reported residential burglary. Carla Wickwire, who lives on East Coolbaugh Street, reported to authorities on Saturday, that someone forcefully entered her home while she was out of town, and stole several pieces of electronic equipment and related components.
The items included a 19” LCD TV, 13 X-BOX Games, an I-POD, and a Laptop computer. Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact the Red Oak Police Department at 712-623-6500, or the Montgomery County Crime stoppers at 800-432-1001.
The Atlantic School’s District’s Board of Education will hold a Certified Budget Amendment Hearing Tuesday evening in the Media Center, at the high school. The hearing, followed by a public comment period, begins at 7:30-p.m., prior to the start of the Board’s regularly scheduled meeting.
During the regular session, the Board will hear a progress report on the Middle School project, and a report from Travis Squires, with Piper-Jaffray. In other business, they’ll act on approving General Education/Special Education, and Amended contracts, approve Letters of Assignment, Volunteer Coaches, and any resignations.
Other action items include approval of: A 2-year agreement with Non-Certified Staff; Bread, Milk and Garbage bids; the Certified 2011-2012 Budget Amendment; Anne Wickman playground expansion at the Lincoln School, and the Lindamood-Bell Reading Program contract.
Up for discussion prior to adjournment, is the topic of additional classroom space at Schuler Elementary.

WASHINGTON, Iowa (AP) — At least six people have been killed in a spate of weekend crashes in Iowa. The deadliest crash happened Saturday afternoon in Washington, Iowa. The Iowa State Patrol says a pickup driven by 56-year-old Randall Graber crossed the center line, hitting a motorcycle head-on. Two people on the motorcycle were killed, and Graber and his passenger were injured.
DES MOINES (AP) — The husband of the University of Iowa president will be paid $54,000 this year to attend school fundraisers, although officials who supposedly approved the position have no recollection of doing so. The university says Ken Mason was appointed in 2007 as both a “presidential fundraiser” and a lecturer in the biology department — earning $107,000 a year. A university spokesman says that Ken Mason’s hire was part of the negotiations to lure his wife away from Purdue University.

The display unveiled Saturday is located on the terrace on the northwest corner of the complex. The granite boulder bears the inscription “TEACHER.” The memorial was funded with private donations.
DES MOINES (AP) — Iowa legislative leaders are expressing confidence they can finish their protracted budget talks and end their session this week. Many lawmakers left the Statehouse last week because measure weren’t coming up for votes. But Republican House Speaker Kraig Paulsen says lawmakers will return today (Monday), to vote on budget bills following negotiations by legislative leaders. The Legislature was scheduled to adjourn nearly three weeks ago.
CEDAR FALLS (AP) — A Waverly man says he’s sorry for defacing a Cedar Falls highway sign with racist graffiti. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports 27-year-old Joshua Beyer apologized Friday as he pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal mischief. As part of a plea deal, Beyer was sentenced to two to five years’ probation.

Police in Red Oak report the arrest late Saturday night, of 43-year old Michael Sean Colebank. Colebank, of Red Oak, was taken into custody on a charge of OWI/3rd offense. He was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $5,000 bond
Sheriff’s Officials in Adams County report a Corning man was arrested Saturday evening on an Attempted Murder charge. 50-year old Rex Kinser was taken into custody after he called the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and said he was looking for another person, and intended to kill that person. Kinser was booked into the Adams County Jail.
Sheriff’s Officials report also, a Lenox man was arrested Saturday afternoon on an Adams County warrant charging him with felony Sexual Abuse. 33-year old Peter Davidson was originally arrested April 27th on a charge of 3rd degree sexual abuse, stemming from an investigation by the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Human Services. He was subsequently released on $10,000 bond.
Davidson was arrested again, Saturday afternoon, on a felony charge of 2nd degree sexual abuse. He later posted a $5,000 bond and was released. No details were provided concerning the circumstances of the alleged incidents.
COUNCIL BLUFFS (AP) — Three people were injured when a tree fell on their tent early Sunday morning, at Lake Manawa State Park in Council Bluffs. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says 23-year-old Alicia Nichols, 25-year-old Timothy Hiers Jr. and 3-year-old Timothy Hiers III, all of the Council Bluffs area, were taken to a hospital after the Sunday morning incident.
According to Omaha television station KETV, Nichols suffered skull fractures, a broken pelvis, back and rib injuries, along with internal bleeding. Tim Heirs Jr. suffered from a torn spleen and internal bleeding. Both were being treated at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs. Tim Heirs III was being treated at the Nebraska Medical Center. And while he might be able to come home in a few days, his grandfather said the boy would be on mandatory bed rest, for at least a week.Authorities said the three victims were camping in a tent at the park when high winds swept through the area around 5 a.m., and brought down the tree.
A collision between a small car and a motorcycle Saturday evening in Montgomery County resulted in one injury and the cycle bursting into flames. According to the Iowa State Patrol, 41-year old Patricia O’Neal, of Clarinda, was flown by Lifenet Helicopter to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha following the crash on Highway 71, at around 5:25-p.m. Officials say O’Nea was traveling north on 71 on a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle and started to turn east onto 155th Street, when she turned back onto 71. 31-year old Jamie Lagassie, of Atlantic, was behind the cycle and and attempting to pass it on the left as it was turning right. When the cycle merged back on to 71, it was hit by Lagassie’s 2012 Ford Focus. O’Neal was thrown from her cycle, which then burst into flames. A report on the womans’ condition was not available late Saturday night. Lagassie was not injured in the crash.
