News

June 28th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce has partnered with First Whitney Bank to continue the Shop Local Initiative to educate community members about the importance of shopping local. The Chamber, in partnership with local businesses, kicked off the Shop Local Passport Program in June 2016 to reward shoppers for shopping local. The Chamber says it is excited to announce the continuation of the program.

Bailey Smith, Executive Director at the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce said “The Shop Local Passport Program is a year-long incentive that not only helps educate community members, but rewards them for shopping local. In only ten months, 4,200 passports have been turned in, totaling $735,000 spent at participating businesses. This number shows the community is excited about this program and we are thrilled to partner with First Whitney Bank again and continue this incentive.”

How it works:

  • Passports are available for pick up at the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce or participating businesses.
  • Shoppers receive stamps in the amount of purchases at participating businesses.
  • Once your passport is complete, you have the option to return the completed passport to the Chamber or participating businesses to be entered into a monthly drawing to win Passport Bucks, redeemable at participating businesses.

ACLU wants new rules on schools use of seclusion rooms

News

June 28th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa and six other attorneys want state rules changed regarding public schools’ use of padded seclusion rooms and physical restraints.

The ACLU and the attorneys last week filed a petition for rulemaking with the Iowa Education Department. The petition asks the department to change Iowa Administrative Code to ensure seclusion and physical restraints are used only for emergencies and as a last resort and are never used to punish children.

The petition was filed less than a month after an Education Department review found that the Iowa City Community School District on occasion sent students to seclusion rooms for minor infractions: stepping out of line, having an attitude, being out of instructional control or using foul language.

Dr. Roger Drown (DPM) to move out of SW IA Surgery into AMC July 5

News

June 28th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Cass County Health System in Atlantic report beginning July 5th, Roger Drown, Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, will move out of Southwest Iowa Surgery and into Atlantic Medical Center, where he will continue providing foot and ankle care for all ages. CCHS CEO Brett Altman said of the change, “We are very fortunate to have such an excellent foot and ankle surgeon caring for our patients here at CCHS. There should not be any disruption in patient care with this change in clinic location.”

Dr. Drown began caring for patients at Cass County Health System in 2011 as a visiting specialist. In 2014, he moved his practice to CCHS. He performs a wide range of surgical procedures. All treatments are performed at Cass County Memorial Hospital and most surgeries are done on an outpatient basis.

Southwest Iowa Surgery will continue to schedule appointments through the end of June, but starting on July 3rd appointments with Dr. Drown can be made by calling the Atlantic Medical Center at 712-243-2850.
